It is shown that the light intensity from a mercury short arc light bulb can be boosted to about 100 times its steady-state value for a period of about 1 ms by superimposing a current pulse of up to 100 amperes in magnitude and 1-2 ms in duration on a simmer current of 3 amperes. The output spectrum changes in a remarkable way from a line to a broadband distribution. The radiance delivered during a 1-ms pulse is comparable to what can be obtained from a Xe flash bulb. PURPOSE: A new method of treating fecal impaction is described, selecting patients that would otherwise have required operative disimpaction.
METHOD: Using the pulsed irrigation enhanced evacuation device, individuals were selected for treatment based on evidence of massive fecal impaction on physical examination or abdominal x-ray.

Although Doppler echocardiography allows recording of regurgitant turbulent flow patterns in normal persons, sparse information is available concerning the incidence, characteristics and mechanism of these flow patterns. The pulsed Doppler principle enables us to study the bloodflow velocity at specific points in the heart and great vessels. In such aorto-pulmonary connections as patent ductus arteriosus, aorto-pulmonary window and truncus arteriosus the bloodflow velocity patterns are typical of the malformation. Based on knowledge of these abnormal flow patterns the diagnoses of these malformations can be made.

Sixty patients with pulmonary regurgitation were studied by the pulsed Doppler technique combined with two-dimensional and M-mode echocardiography.
