Synthesis and characterization of cadmium phosphide quantum dots emitting in the visible red to near-infrared.

The synthesis of high-quality cadmium phosphide quantum dots with emission wavelength maxima in the range from 1200 to approximately 760 nm are reported. The results demonstrate that the nucleation and growth linked with the optical properties can be controlled by the temperature, the growth time, and the addition of ligands such as oleylamine and trioctylphosphine. Photoelectrochemical investigations revealed that the cadmium phosphide QD-derivatized electrodes show an optical response and that photocurrents of several nanoamperes per square centimeter can be obtained upon illumination.

Pulmonary thrombosis in the mouse following intravenous administration of quantum dot-labeled mesenchymal cells.

Quantum dots (QDs) are emerging as novel diagnostic agents. Yet, only a few studies have examined the possible deleterious effects of QD-labeled stem cells. We assessed the potential toxic effects of QD-labeled human embryonic palatal mesenchymal (QD-HEPM) cells in male NOD/SCID mice for six months, following the administration of a single intravenous injection. Control animals were administered with non-labeled HEPM cells. No treatment-related clinical signs, hematological, or biochemical parameters were found in the QD-HEPM animals in comparison to control animals. Histologically, multifocal…

The contribution of the capillary endothelium to blood clearance and tissue deposition of anionic quantum dots in vivo.

The increasing interest in biomedical applications of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) is closely linked to the use of surface modifications to target specific sites of the body. The immense surface area of vascular endothelium is a possible interaction platform with systemically administered QDs. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the microvascular distribution of neutral, cationic, and anionic QDs in vivo. QDs with carboxyl-, amine- and polyethylene glycol surface coatings were injected into the blood circulation of mice. In vivo microscopy of the cremaster muscle, two-photo…

Anomalous photoluminescence in CdSe quantum-dot solids at high pressure due to nonuniform stress.

The application of static high pressure provides a means to precisely control and investigate many fundamental and unique properties of nanoparticles. CdSe is a model quantum-dot system, the behavior of which under high pressure has been extensively studied; however, the effect of nonuniform stresses on this system has not been fully appreciated. Photoluminescence data obtained from CdSe quantum-dot solids in different stress environments varying from purely uniform to highly nonuniform are presented. Small deviations from a uniform stress distribution profoundly affect the electronic properti

Quantum dots laser desorption/ionization MS: multifunctional CdSe quantum dots as the matrix, concentrating probes and acceleration for microwave enzymatic digestion for peptide analysis and high resolution detection of proteins in a linear MALDI-TOF MS.

We report the first use of functionalized cadmium selinide quantum dots (CdSe QDs) with 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) as the matrix for the selective ionization of proteins with high resolution and rapid analysis of amino acids and peptides by using quantum dots laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (QDLDI-MS). The mercaptocarboxylic groups of CdSe QDs have been known to be an effective affinity probe to interact with the biomolecules at low abundance level. Using these QDs as the matrix, sensitivity of the method was greatly enhanced and the LOQ of peptides was found to be 100 pM w…

Quantum Dot One-Dimensional Arrays Using Templates: Recent Progress and Future Perspectives.

Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) represent a premier class of inorganic nanomaterials featuring tunable optical properties, including size- and composition-dependent light absorption and photoluminescence (PL). Recent research has focused on their highly ordered 2D and 3D assemblies, termed superlattices, which exhibit collective photophysical phenomena such as long-range exciton diffusion and superfluorescence. However, constructing lower-dimensional architectures, such as 1D arrays capable of directional energy transport, remains a formidable challenge. This difficulty arises because convent…

Multi-stack InP/GaAsP quantum dot lasers on Si with high characteristic temperature.

Monolithic integration of InP quantum dot (QD) lasers on silicon is essential for on-chip quantum technologies and biophotonics. We demonstrate 780-nm InP/GaAsP QD lasers monolithically grown on (001) Si with an improved characteristic temperature (T0) of 125 K in the 20-50 °C range. By increasing the active-region stacking to five layers, the threshold current density was reduced to 0.86 kA/cm2 with a thermal wavelength shift of 0.25 nm/°C. Comparative analysis with 3-layer counterparts on Si and devices on GaAs substrates indicates that the optimized 5-layer structure effectively enhances mo

Linear tuning of exciton binding energy in colloidal quantum dot solid-state film.

Colloidal quantum dot (QD) solid-state films are fundamental building blocks for modern optoelectronic devices. In these films, the complex dielectric environment formed by surrounding QDs and organic ligands significantly modifies their electronic and excitonic properties, posing a considerable theoretical challenge. Herein, we report a robust first-principles scheme capable of accurately predicting the fundamental and optical gaps of these films. The methodology's success is rooted in a twofold innovation: the development of optimized, dimensionally consistent Gaussian basis sets that accura

Room temperature collective blinking and photon bunching from CsPbBr3 quantum dot superlattice.

Development of quantum systems supporting collective many-body states is crucial for advancement of quantum technologies, and perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as promising quantum light sources. However, photon bunching, a key signature of collective states, has been observed in perovskites only at cryogenic temperatures. Here, we report collective blinking and photon bunching in perovskite QD superlattices at room temperature. Sub-wavelength-sized CsPbBr3 superlattices exhibit distinct two-level blinking, and demonstrate photon bunching with a degree of up to 3.9. Time-resolved phot…

Scaling Up Molecular Electron Spin Qubits Around a Core-Shell Quantum Dot.

Attachment of molecular nanomagnets (MNMs) to surfaces is an essential step toward multi-qubit assemblies for the implementation of quantum information technologies. Here, thiol-monofunctionalized {Cr7Ni} molecular antiferromagnetic rings that have potential as electron spin qubits have been synthesized and successfully attached to the surface of a highly luminescent core-shell CdSe/ZnS quantum dot (QD) nanoparticle via a ligand exchange process. The successful grafting of eleven molecular rings per QD was confirmed by high-angle annular dark field (HAADF) scanning transmission electron micros

Degradation of the Intermediate Band Caused by Disorder in Quantum-Dot Intermediate-Band Solar Cells.

Intermediate band solar cells require in-gap electronic states that remain sufficiently extended to sustain collective electronic coupling and facilitate carrier motion. We investigate how structural disorder affects an intermediate band formed by coupled colloidal quantum dots embedded in a perovskite-like matrix. The system is represented by a single-orbital tight-binding Hamiltonian on a dilated face-centered-cubic lattice containing 4000 quantum dots, with system sizes between 1372 and 5324 in the finite-size analysis. Radius dispersion modifies on-site energies and hopping amplitudes, whe…

Insights Into the Antibiofilm Activity of Carbon Quantum Dots Against a Panel of Different Microorganisms: A Review.

Biofilm-associated infections account for a majority of chronic bacterial diseases. These infections also present a therapeutic challenge due to their intrinsic tolerance to conventional antibiotics. Carbon dots (CDs) have emerged as a versatile nanoplatform with the potential to combat these resilient structures. This review critically evaluates the burgeoning field of CD-based antibiofilm agents. We move beyond a catalog of studies to analyze how the physicochemical properties of CDs dictate their mechanisms of action against a panel of microorganisms. The antibiofilm activity of CDs is mult

Electric-Field-Tunable Spin-Orbit Gap in a Bilayer Graphene/WSe2 Quantum Dot.

We report on the investigation of proximity-induced spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in a heterostructure of bilayer graphene (BLG) and tungsten diselenide (WSe2). A BLG quantum dot (QD) in the few-particle regime acts as a sensitive probe for induced SOC. Finite bias and magnetotransport spectroscopy measurements reveal a significantly enhanced SOC that decreases with the applied displacement field, distinguishing it from pristine BLG. Furthermore, our measurements demonstrate a reduced valley g factor at larger displacement fields, consistent with weaker lateral confinement of the QD. Our findings

Aggregation Characteristics of Tau Phosphorylated by Various Kinases as Observed by Quantum Dot Fluorescence Imaging.

This study focused on the abnormal phosphorylation of tau and its aggregation process, characteristic of Alzheimer's disease, and aimed to compare the morphology and formation process of phosphorylated tau aggregates produced by four kinases: Cdk5/p25, GSK3β, MARK4, and p38α. Using quantum dots for 2D and 3D structural analysis, tau aggregates were confirmed in non-phosphorylated tau (non p-tau), as well as tau phosphorylated by GSK3β and MARK4. Aggregation initiation times were observed around 72 h for non-p-tau, and around 96 h for GSK3β and MARK4 phosphorylated tau. The thickness of non-p-t…

Tannic acid cross-linked polyethylenimine quantum dot nanoclusters for efficient DNA release.

In this work, we present a strategy for synthesizing nanoclusters (TC25NCs) by bonding formaldehyde functionalized tannic acid (TA-CHO) with polyethyleneimine quantum dots (CQDs). The synthesized vector effectively loads DNA and exhibits significant pH-responsive release, thereby facilitating traceable DNA delivery in cells. The TC25NCs/DNA demonstrated negligible cytotoxicity at high N/P ratios, with cell viability exceeding 80 %. Utilizing the excellent fluorescence imaging capability of TC25NCs, real-time monitoring of cell uptake and quantitative analysis of uptake efficiency were achieved…

Development of quantum dot-based immunochromatographic strip for detection of antibodies against ASFV pp62.

ASFV is the only known double-stranded insect-borne DNA virus, which can rapidly infect domestic pigs and wild boars with ticks as transmission medium. Since it was first discovered in 1921, it quickly spread to all parts of the world and brought huge economic losses to the pig industry all over the world. At present, there is still no safe and effective vaccine for ASFV. Here, we developed a quantum-dot labeled antibody test strip for the detection of antibodies against ASFV pp62. The pp62 protein was labeled with quantum dots, and the antibody test strip was developed uses it in a detection …

Efficient Quantum-Dot Light-Emitting Diodes Enabled via a Charge Manipulating Structure.

Charge carriers are the basic physical element in an electrically driven quantum-dot light-emitting diode (QLED), which acts as a converter transforming electric energy to light energy. Therefore, it is widely sought after to manage the charge carriers for achieving efficient energy conversion; however, to date, there has been a lack of understanding and efficient strategies. Here, an efficient QLED is achieved by manipulating the charge distribution and dynamics with an n-type 1,3,5-tris(N-phenylbenzimidazole-2-yl)benzene (TPBi) layer embedded into the hole-transport layer.
