Between 1969 and 1984, a group of 54 patients with plastic induration of the penis was treated at the Medical Radiation Institute of the University of Tübingen. During the first years conventional X-ray irradiation was applied, and since 1974 patients were submitted to 3 or 5 MeV electron irradiation of a linear accelerator, until a total focal dose of 20 Gy was accumulated. 78% of these patients were between 50 and 60 years old. The radiological findings, using a single-contrast barium infusion technique, are described in a series of 13 patients with chronic radiation enteritis. Radiation is used to treat many head and neck tumors, and of necessity the temporal bone is sometimes included in the paths of radiation. We studied the histopathology of the external auditory canal in 13 temporal bones from 10 patients who had undergone irradiation for head and neck tumors. The question of damage to the ear from exposure to ionizing radiation was addressed by exposing groups of chinchillas to fractioned doses of radiation (2 Gy per day) for total doses ranging from 40 to 90 Gy. Between 1973 and 1977, 254 patients with previously untreated squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx received 60Co external beam therapy; 161 patients (63.4%) survived without evidence of malignancy for five years after the radiation therapy alone, and 21 patients survived after salvage surgery. The overall crude survival rate was 182/254, i.e. 71.7 per cent at five years. Five-year survival rates without evidence of malignancy were 81.6 per cent in stage I, 73.4 per cent in stage II, and 40.8 per cent in stage III.

In a series of 199 patients with hypopharyngeal carcinoma treated with irradiation, the primary tumor was controlled in 63 per cent, 54 per cent, 44 per cent and 14 per cent of T1-T4 lesions, respectively. The five-year actuarial survival for stages I, II, III and IV patients was 60 per cent, 66 per cent, 49 per cent and 18 per cent. Structures and properties of polymers isolated from the reaction mixtures obtained upon irradiation of dilute aqueous solutions of ammonium cyanide and HCN with gamma rays of 60Co were studied. On the basis of spectroscopic and chemical data it was concluded that two principal classes of polymers occur each of them having molecular weights that range from about 5000 to over 20000. Twenty patients with symptomatic and extensive pityriasis rosea were treated with unilateral UV-B phototherapy in a bilateral comparison study. Five consecutive daily erythemogenic exposures resulted in substantially decreased pruritus and extent of disease greater than that on the untreated side in approximately 50% of the patients. Therapy seems to be most beneficial to patients receiving treatment within the first week of the eruption.

In conjunction with the clinical development of intraoperative radiotherapy, a study was undertaken in dogs to define the tolerance of normal anatomic structures in the retroperitoneum to radiation delivered during operation. The appropriate treatment of these uncommon acute and chronic radiation changes consists in principle or excision and skin flap covering. Details are given of 37 consecutive patients with radiation damage to the rectum. Twenty-eight presented with rectovaginal fistulas, 3 with haemorrhage from ulcerative proctitis, 3 with low rectal strictures, 2 with a painful rectal ulcer and 1 with a rectal carcinoma.
