INTRODUCTION: Pelvic radiotherapy can cause anal stenosis. Patients can be left with severe rectal evacuatory difficulties, anal fissuring and resistant faecal incontinence. The management of such patients is difficult since surgical treatment can worsen faecal incontinence.

PURPOSE: To determine the effectiveness of a multicomponent clinical intervention to reduce pain in outpatients with cancer.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Sixty-four patients were randomly assigned to receive either a clinical intervention including an information session, the use of a pain diary, and the possibility to contact a physician to adjust the pain medication, or the usual treatment of pain by the staff radiation oncologist. We report two cases in which weekly paclitaxel (TXL) administration and concurrent radiation was effective for metastatic breast cancer. TXL (80 mg/m2) was infused over 1 hour after short premedication. Case 1: A 50-year-old woman was found to have atelectasis of the middle lobe after treatment for brain metastasis. Gross haematuria and severe bleeding from the large intestine occurred after pelvic radiotherapy in an 84-year-old woman with cancer of the uterus. Hyperbaric oxygenation treatment at 2 atmospheric absolute pressures for 60 minutes daily over 30 days and infusion of prostaglandin E1 abolished completely haematuria and tarry stool, and reversed the endoscopic findings of radiation cystitis and colitis.

The authors studied effects of microwave electromagnetic irradiation on the course of peptic ulcers and dissemination with Helicobacter pylori in 60 patients with various severity of the disease.
