Application of Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma in the Intensive Care Unit.

The Extended-Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (E-FAST) allows clinicians to rapidly diagnose traumatic thoracoabdominal injuries at the bedside without ionizing radiation. It has high specificity and is extremely useful as an initial test to rule in dangerous diagnoses such as hemoperitoneum, pericardial effusion, hemothorax, and pneumothorax. Its moderate sensitivity means that it should not be used alone as a tool to rule out dangerous thoracoabdominal injuries. In patients with a concerning mechanism or presentation, additional imaging should be obtained despite a negative FAST

New era of radiotherapy: an update in radiation-induced lung disease.

Over the last few decades, advances in radiotherapy (RT) technology have improved delivery of radiation therapy dramatically. Advances in treatment planning with the development of image-guided radiotherapy and in techniques such as proton therapy, allows the radiation therapist to direct high doses of radiation to the tumour. These advancements result in improved local regional control while reducing potentially damaging dosage to surrounding normal tissues. It is important for radiologists to be aware of the radiological findings from these advances in order to differentiate expected radiati

Optimising on-treatment review schedules: A narrative review of acute toxicities in ultra-hypofractionated stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SABR) for localised prostate cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Ultra-hypofractionated stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SABR) delivers high radiation doses to a planned target volume. Compared to conventional radiotherapy (CRT), SABR offers radiobiological advantages and improved tumour control for localised prostate cancer but may present a different acute toxicity profile. This review synthesises existing literature regarding acute toxicities associated with ultra-hypofractionated SABR to identify the timing, incidence, and severity of side effects and inform optimal treatment review schedules. METHODS: A narrative review was condu

AOP report: Development of an adverse outcome pathway for deposition of energy leading to cataracts.

Cataracts are one of the leading causes of blindness, with an estimated 95 million people affected worldwide. A hallmark of cataract development is lens opacification, typically associated not only with aging but also radiation exposure as encountered by interventional radiologists and astronauts during the long-term space mission. To better understand radiation-induced cataracts, the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) framework was used to structure and evaluate knowledge across biological levels of organization (e.g., macromolecular, cell, tissue, organ, organism and population). AOPs identify a

Resilience, aging, and response to radiation exposure (RARRE) in nonhuman primates: a resource review.

The Wake Forest nonhuman primate (NHP) Radiation Late Effects Cohort (RLEC) is a unique and irreplaceable population of aging NHP radiation survivors which serves the nation's need to understand the late effects of radiation exposure. Over the past 16 years, Wake Forest has evaluated > 250 previously irradiated rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) that were exposed to single total body irradiation (IR) doses of 1.14-8.5 Gy or to partial body exposures of up to 10 Gy (5% bone marrow sparing) or 10.75 Gy (whole thorax). Though primarily used to examine IR effects on disease-specific processes or to

Pilot applications of GPT-4 in radiation oncology: Summarizing patient symptom intake and targeted chatbot applications.

This study explores using GPT-4 for radiation toxicity monitoring in prostate cancer treatments. Two methods were tested: a summarization method and a chatbot interface. Surveyed radiation oncologists preferred the summarization method for its accuracy and potential for adoption (median rating 8 vs 4, p =.002). Both methods saved time.

Medical consequences of radiation exposure of the bronchi-what can we learn from high-dose precision radiation therapy?

The bronchial tolerance to high doses of radiation is not fully understood. However, in the event of a radiological accident with unintended exposure of the central airways to high doses of radiation it would be important to be able to anticipate the clinical consequences given the magnitude of the absorbed dose to different parts of the bronchial tree. Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is a radiation treatment technique involving a few large fractions of photon external-beam radiation delivered to a well-defined target in the body. Despite generally favourable results, with high loca

Responses to ionizing radiation mediated by inflammatory mechanisms.

Since the early years of the twentieth century, the biological consequences of exposure to ionizing radiation have been attributed solely to mutational DNA damage or cell death induced in irradiated cells at the time of exposure. However, numerous observations have been at variance with this dogma. In the 1950s, attention was drawn to abscopal effects in areas of the body not directly irradiated. In the 1960s reports began appearing that plasma factors induced by irradiation could affect unirradiated cells, and since 1990 a growing literature has documented an increased rate of DNA damage in t

[UV index and its implications].

The published UV index refers to the expected UV intensity at mid day, when the solar elevation is at its maximum. In Scandinavia, the maximum UV index is seven around midsummer. When the UV index is three, the erythema-weighted dose will be three Standard Erythema Dose (SED) in the hour with maximum intensity and nine SED in the three hours around solar noon, corresponding to 50% of the daily dose of 18 SED. A sun-sensitive Dane can tolerate two SED and an average Dane 4-5 SED before having erythema of the skin the next day. If outdoor all day without protection, they may therefore receive a

Implementation of a forearm support to reduce the amount of irradiated lung and heart in radiation therapy of the breast.

We compared simulator images of medial tangential fields taken in two positions: (1) with the ipsilateral arm abducted, holding a 'L-bar' armrest and (2) with both arms extended above the head in a forearm support. The average maximum heart distance as well as the central lung distance decreased significantly by 3.4 (SE 0.9) and 4.7 (SE 1.1) mm, respectively, when the new forearm support was used. The estimated normal tissue complication probability for excess cardiac mortality decreased by on average 3.1% (SE 1.3%). For some patients, a greater amount of the axilla was included in the field.

Metformin Ameliorates 2.856 GHz Microwave- Radiation-Induced Reproductive Impairments in Male Rats via Inhibition of Oxidative Stress and Apoptosis.

The reproductive system has been increasingly implicated as a sensitive target of microwave radiation. Oxidative stress plays a critical role in microwave radiation -induced reproductive damage, though precise mechanisms are obscure. Metformin, a widely used antidiabetic drug, has emerged as an efficient antioxidant against a variety of oxidative injuries. In the present study, we hypothesized that metformin can function as an antioxidant and protect the reproductive system from microwave radiation. To test this hypothesis, rats were exposed to 2.856 GHz microwave radiation for 6 weeks to simu

A Woman with Black Beads in Her Stomach: Severe Gastric Ulceration Caused by Yttrium-90 Radioembolization.

Radioembolization (RE) is a selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) delivering targeted, high-dose, intra-arterial radiation directly to the vascular supply of liver tumors. Complications can occur due to aberrant deposition or migration of radiation microspheres into nontarget locations, including normal hepatic parenchyma, lungs, pancreas, and upper gastrointestinal (UGI) tract. We report a case of gastric ulcers due to yttrium-90 (90Y) seed migration to the stomach to alert clinicians to this rare cause of gastric injury. A 57-year-old woman with stage IV breast cancer with liver and lu

Reducing adverse effects in hypofractionated radiotherapy for prostate cancer: Clinical evidence and emerging mitigation strategies.

BACKGROUND: The technical advances allowed to take the leap towards hypofractionated schedules, as well as dose-escalated schedules, for prostate cancer (PCa) radiotherapy (RT). The aim of this systematic review is to describe RT techniques and toxicity outcomes within trials investigating hypofractionation, and to discuss current or future strategies to mitigate treatment-related toxicity. METHODS: We searched Pubmed database until June, 2025. Studies deemed eligible were phase III trials randomizing different type of fractionation (with at least one arm using hypofractionation) for PCa RT.
