INTRODUCTION: Osteoblastomas are primary bone tumors, rarer than osteoid osteomas, and <10% of these lesions occurs in the spine. Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are rare, benign lesion of the bone and approximately 8-30% of ABCs arise in the spine, mostly in the thoracic and the lumbar regions. The association between them is quite rare in the general population.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 14-year-old boy, soccer player, with an osteoblastoma of the left posterior neural arc of L2 and a secondary aneurismal bone cyst compressing the left L2 nerve root, causing severe antalgic scoliosis

Accurate segmentation of cysts and tumors is an essential step for diagnosis, monitoring and planning therapeutic intervention. This task is usually done manually, however manual identification and segmentation is tedious. In this paper, an automatic method based on asymmetry analysis is proposed which is general enough to segment various types of jaw cysts. The key observation underlying this approach is that normal head and face structure is roughly symmetric with respect to midsagittal plane: the left part and the right part can be divided equally by an axis of symmetry. Cysts and tumors ty

Toll-like receptors (TLR) are essential for the innate immune response against invading pathogens and have been described in immunocompetent cells of areas affected by periapical disease. Besides initiating the inflammatory response, they also directly regulate epithelial cell proliferation and survival in a variety of settings. This study evaluates the in situ expression of TLR4 in periapical granulomas (PG) and radicular cysts, focusing on the epithelial compartment. Twenty-one periapical cysts (PC) and 10 PG were analyzed; 7 dentigerous non-inflamed follicular cyst (DC) served as control. T…

Keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) is one of the benign developmental odontogenic cystic lesions arising from impacted teeth. In comparison to other odontogenic cysts, such as radicular cysts and dentigerous cysts, KCOT is known to be more aggressive and is associated with a relatively high recurrence rate. Traditionally, KCOT has been treated with total resection through sublabial incision. Marsupialization is advocated to reduce surgical invasion. However in all the cases, marsupialization was performed in the oral cavity. With the recent development of appropriate instruments and the end…

BACKGROUND: Hypophosphatasia is a rare inherited disease derived from mutations in tissue non-specific alkaline phosphatase genes, with typical oral symptoms including short root anomaly and dysplasia of dentin or cementum.
CASE PRESENTATION: Two young female patients presented with short root anomaly with a history of premature loss of deciduous and/or permanent teeth. The laboratory and imaging investigations were performed. One case was diagnosed as odontohypophosphatasia concurrent with hyperthyroidism, the other was odontohypophosphatasia concurrent with multiple radicular cysts.

Many lesions that occur in the mandible have a cystlike radiographic appearance. These lesions are often difficult to differentiate on the basis of their radiographic features alone. Mandibular lesions may be odontogenic or nonodontogenic. Among odontogenic lesions without mineralization, ameloblastomas, odontogenic keratocysts, and dentigerous cysts can all appear as well-defined, unilocular, well-corticated, lucent lesions that are often associated with the crowns of impacted or unerupted teeth. Most radicular cysts appear as round or pear-shaped, unilocular, lucent lesions in the periapical…

Immunoglobulin (Ig) kappa (kappa) and lambda (lambda) light chain mRNA-expressing cells were investigated by in situ hybridization (ISH) to assess the local humoral immune response in human dental periapical lesions. Twenty-seven biopsy samples (17 periapical granulomas and 10 radicular cysts) were examined. Both types of light chain mRNA-positive cells were detected in formalin-fixed/paraffin-embedded tissue sections in all samples. Plasma cells showed weak to strong cytoplasmic staining with both probes and background staining was negligible. The ISH methodology is specific and sensitive in …

Five out of 4,172 operated maxillary cysts (3 developed within the maxillary and 2 in the mandible) presented a malignant change of epithelium. In all these 5 cases histology demonstrated a transition from normal to cancerous epithelium. The overall percentage of malignant change was of 0.12%, with 0.077% for non-keratinized epithelium lining odontogenic cysts (3 cases) and 0.65%, that is 8 times higher, for keratinized ones (2 cases). Keratinization of cystic epithelium and chronic inflammatory lesions were the main risk factors.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies suggest that some viruses, including human cytomegalovirus (CMV), may be involved in the pathogenesis of periapical lesions. Since periapical cysts (PCs) represent the next stage in the evolution of periapical granuloma, it seemed reasonable to investigate the presence of CMV in PCs and any possible relationship between its presence and the clinical features of those cysts, as well as to compare the results obtained with corresponding findings in non-inflammatory lesions, like odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs).
METHODS: Samples of 33 PCs and 10 OKCs, obtained at the

INTRODUCTION: The receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B (RANK)-RANK ligand (RANKL)-osteoprotegerin (OPG) system is important in osteoclastogenesis and may play a role in the development of apical periodontitis. This immunohistochemical study evaluated the distribution of the expression of these regulators of bone resorption in periradicular cysts.
METHODS: Biopsy specimens from 40 consecutive periradicular cysts registered in the files of the Oral Pathology Laboratory were selected for the study on the basis of an initial analysis of archived histopathologic slides. Sections were stain…
