Single nucleotide polymorphisms to predict acute radiation dermatitis in breast cancer patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: To identify Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) that can predict acute radiation dermatitis (RD) in breast cancer patients (BC), and the association between SNPs and RD severity. METHODS: We performed the search in seven databases and the gray literature, and a meta-analysis to assess SNPs in patients with RD and to evaluate the association between SNPs and severe RD. RESULTS: We included sixteen single-arm cohort studies with 4742 BC. The most prevalent SNPs were the TGFβ1 rs1800469 (41%), and the GSTA1 rs3957356 (36%). Seven genotypes were associated with severe RD (PTTG1 rs381

The Preventive Effects of Boron-Based Gel on Radiation Dermatitis in Patients Being Treated for Breast Cancer: A Phase III Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Radiation dermatitis (RD) is a side effect of radiation therapy (RT) which is experienced by over 90% of patients being treated for breast cancer. The current clinical trial was conducted to measure the preventative effects of a boron-based gel on several different clinical outcomes (dermatitis, erythema, dry desquamation, and moist desquamation) after 25 radiotherapy sessions. METHODS: This research used a double-blind parallel-group design with a placebo control (n = 76) and randomized group (n = 181), with all participants being between 18 and 75 years old. Fifteen minutes be

Acute radiation dermatitis among patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma treated with proton beam therapy: Prognostic factors and treatment outcomes.

A high incidence of severe acute radiation dermatitis (ARD) has been reported for cancer patients treated by proton beam therapy (PBT). This observational study investigated the prognostic factors and treatment outcomes of ARD among patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) treated with PBT. Fifty-seven patients with newly diagnosed NPC and treated with PBT were enrolled. ARD was recorded weekly based on the criteria of Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 4.0 at treatment visits (1st to 7th weeks) and 1 week (8th week) and 1 month (11th week) after the completion of PBT.

Alterations in skin microbiome mediated by radiotherapy and their potential roles in the prognosis of radiotherapy-induced dermatitis: a pilot study.

Radiotherapy-induced dermatitis (RID) is an inflammatory cutaneous disorder that is acquired as an adverse effect of undergoing radiotherapy. Skin microbiome dysbiosis has been linked to the outcomes of several dermatological diseases. To explore the skin microbiota of RID and deduce their underlying impact on the outcome of RID, cutaneous microbiomes of 78 RID patients and 20 healthy subjects were characterized by sequencing V1-V3 regions of 16S rRNA gene. In total, a significantly apparent reduction in bacterial diversity was detected in microbiomes of RID in comparison to controls. Overall,

Referral practices to dermatologists for the treatment of radiation dermatitis in the USA: a call for a multidisciplinary approach.

PURPOSE: Acute radiation dermatitis (RD) is a disfiguring and painful rash that occurs in up to 95% of patients receiving radiation therapy (RT) for cancer. Treatment for RD varies among practitioners with no evidence-based gold standard for management. While a multi-disciplinary approach has been utilized to manage other cancer-related toxicities, RD is most often managed by the treating radiation oncologist. METHODS: This study evaluated the referral practices of radiation oncologists to dermatologists for management of RD utilizing a survey of radiation oncologists across the USA. The goal

Reducing radiation in chronic total occlusion percutaneous coronary interventions.

The field of percutaneous intervention for chronic total occlusion (CTO) has enjoyed significant innovations in the recent years. Novel techniques and technologies have revolutionized the field and have resulted in considerably higher success rates even in patients with high anatomical complexity. Successful CTO recanalization is associated with significant clinical benefits, such as the improvement of angina and quality of life, reduced rates of surgical revascularization, improvement of left ventricular function and decreased mortality rates. However, complex CTO procedures often require pro

Protocol Paper: A Randomized Trial of 2 Creams in the Skin Care of Patients Receiving Radiation Therapy for Breast Cancer in the Tropics.

BACKGROUND: Nurses working in a northern Australia Radiation Therapy Unit advise all patients undergoing radiation therapy to use a readily available nonprescription moisturizing cream to minimize the severity of radiation skin reactions. However, patients report that the cream is thick and difficult to use in the humid tropical climate, and nurses anecdotally suspect an increase in severe skin reactions during the summer months. OBJECTIVE: This article presents the protocol for a randomized controlled trial that addressed a lack of evidence pertaining to the use of topical creams to prevent

A case-control, mono-center, open-label, pilot study to evaluate the feasibility of therapeutic touch in preventing radiation dermatitis in women with breast cancer receiving adjuvant radiation therapy.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic touch (TT) is a non-invasive commonly used complementary therapy. TT is based on the use of hand movements and detection of energy field congestion to correct imbalances. Improvement in subjective symptoms in a variety of clinical trials has been seen with TT. The effect of TT during radiotherapy for breast cancer is unknown. METHODS: Women undergoing adjuvant radiation for Stage I/II breast cancer post conservative surgery were recruited for this cohort study. TT treatments were administered three times per week following radiation therapy. Feasibility was defined as

Protective effect of transparent film dressing on proton therapy induced skin reactions.

OBJECTIVE: Proton therapy can result in clinically significant radiation dermatitis. In some clinical scenarios, such as lung or breast cancer, the risk of severe radiation dermatitis may limit beam arrangement and prescription doses. Patients undergoing proton therapy for prostate cancer commonly develop mild radiation dermatitis. Herein, we report the outcomes of two prostate cancer patients whose radiation dermatitis appears to have been substantially diminished by transparent film dressings (Beekley stickers). METHODS: This is a descriptive report of the skin toxicity observed in two pati

Vitamin E-deficiency did not exacerbate partial skin reactions in mice locally irradiated with X-rays.

We previously showed that free radicals and oxidative stress are involved in radiation-induced skin reactions. Since vitamin E (VE) is a particularly important lipophilic antioxidant, VE-deficient mice were used to examine its effects on radiation-induced skin damage. The VE content of the skin was reduced to one fourth of levels of normal mice. Neither the time of onset nor the extent of the reactions quantified with a scoring system differed between normal and VE-deficient mice after local X-irradiation (50 Gy). Similarly, there was no difference in the levels of the ascorbyl radical between

Radiation recall with vinorelbine and cisplatin.

BACKGROUND: Radiation recall dermatitis (RRD) is an inflammatory skin reaction in a previously irradiated field in response to certain pharmacological agents. Little is known about the potential risk of RRD in response to the use of vinorelbine and cisplatin. CASE REPORT: Herein, we report a case of RRD following the combination treatment of vinorelbine and cisplatin in a lung cancer patient with lymph node metastasis. We describe the timing and doses of radiation exposure and chemotherapy, the features of the skin reactions, the clinical management, and the outcome. We also review previous r
