Congenital dislocation of the hip in Southland.

A study of incidence of congenital dislocation of the hip in Southland was undertaken. Covering as it does a 20-year period during which the common age of diagnosis was reduced from 20 months to three months, this series shows a rising recorded incidence of CDH in a period associated with the arrival of a resident orthopaedic surgeon and introduction of the test of limited abduction with x-ray confirmation. The incidence in the succeeding 10 years rising to 2.9 per thousand live births was between the old average for late diagnosis and that obtained with neonatal examination. A higher incidenc

Neighborhood Factors and Treatment Outcomes in Pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia: A REDIAL Consortium Report.

UNLABELLED: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) shows persistent outcome disparities among socioeconomically disadvantaged and Hispanic children. Neighborhood socioeconomic status (nSES) and residence in Hispanic enclaves may contribute to these disparities, yet their impact on pediatric ALL is unclear. We examined associations of nSES and Hispanic enclave residence with ALL treatment outcomes. We analyzed children (0-24 years) diagnosed with ALL between 2005 and 2017 and treated at REducing Disparities In Acute Leukemia (REDIAL) Consortium centers in Texas. Census-tract nSES (Yost) and Hispani

Retirement timing, living arrangements and mental health: a multi-method investigation using Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe.

AIMS: The relationship between retirement and mental health remains unclear, with mixed evidence likely driven by methodological challenges and heterogeneity across population subgroups. This study explores the relationship between retirement, time since retirement and mental health, focusing on differences between those living alone and cohabiting. METHODS: We used data from 10,698 participants (48,815 observations) in the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe, waves 1-8, spanning 20 countries and 16 years. Participants were included if they were employed at baseline and retired

'They Even Have the Capacity, but the Places Aren't Prepared to Receive Them': Community Environment and Participation of Autistic Children in a Family-Engaged Research Analysis.

To examine the associations between community environmental barriers and support and the participation of autistic children, and to interpret these findings from the perspective of caregivers engaged as research partners. This cross-sectional observational study employed a mixed-methods design. The first phase comprised analytical and exploratory quantitative analyses. Caregivers of autistic children aged 5-12 years reported participation outcomes-frequency, involvement, and desire for change-using the Brazilian version of the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth (PEM-C

Association between dry eye disease and temperature is modified by residential greenness: case-crossover study in Beijing, China.

BACKGROUND: Dry eye disease (DED) is one of the most prevalent eye conditions globally. While the harmful effects of air pollution on DED are well-documented, the role of temperature—an important factor linked to climate change—remains less understood. Green spaces have been identified as a potential way to reduce health risks from climate change, yet few studies have examined their combined influence on DED. METHODS: A time-stratified case-crossover study was conducted using data of 71,069 first-time outpatient visits for DED at Peking University People’s Hospital in Beijing, from January 201

Scenescape and youth tobacco use in China: a symbolic study of expressive and volatile scenes.

Previous research often measured sites and venues as proxies for place, but the place effect on health also comes from the symbolic value emanating from a place-namely the scenescape. This study investigates how scenescapes affected adolescent tobacco use by combining the number of venues and the symbolic meanings of each venue measured via separate surveys. We sampled 2800 adolescents and youths (age 15-25) from 33 schools from 4 major Sinitic cultural regions and tested whether exposure to highly expressive and volatile scenescapes increases the likelihood of tobacco use. We assessed and cal

Living arrangements and chronic disease accumulation among native-born and immigrant older adults in Europe.

BACKGROUND: Who we live with in later life significantly influences the daily care support we receive, potentially moderating chronic disease trajectories. For immigrants, this relationship is further complicated by cultural preferences for certain living arrangements. This study examines the differential role of living arrangements in chronic disease accumulation among native-born and immigrant older adults in Europe. METHODS: Using data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (2006-2022), we analyze how living arrangements moderate the relationship between age, migration

Profiles of community environment and its association with trajectories of depressive symptoms in Chinese adolescents: A latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Given the high prevalence of depressive symptoms among adolescents and the crucial role of community context as outlined by the social-ecological model, this study aimed to identify potential patterns of community environment among Chinese adolescents and to further examine its association with the developmental trajectories of depressive symptoms. METHODS: Data were derived from three waves of the Students' Mental Health Network project. Totally, 2098 participants who completed all follow-up assessments were included in the analysis. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 9-

Adolescent psychopathic traits and adverse environments: Associations with socially adaptive outcomes.

Researchers have suggested that psychopathic traits among adults may be, at least in part, an adaptive and/or a learned response for securing socially adaptive outcomes in adverse environments, but there is a lack of developmental evidence supporting this hypothesis among adolescents. Therefore, we examined the indirect links from self-perceived adverse environments (parental neglect, socioeconomic status, school competition, neighborhood violence) to evolutionarily relevant social outcomes (social power, dating behavior) through psychopathic traits. A community sample of 396 adolescents compl

Experiences of a Community-Based Digital Intervention Among Older People Living in a Low-Income Neighborhood: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Older adults worldwide experienced heightened risks of depression, anxiety, loneliness, and poor mental well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. During this period, digital technology emerged as a means to mitigate social isolation and enhance social connectedness among older adults. However, older adults' behaviors and attitudes toward the adoption and use of digital technology are heterogeneous and shaped by factors such as age, income, and education. Few empirical studies have examined how older adults experiencing social and economic disadvantages perceive the learning of digit

Poverty reduction and childhood opportunity moves: A randomized trial of cash transfers to low-income U.S. families with infants.

Black and Hispanic children have a higher likelihood of experiencing neighborhood poverty than white children. This study uses data from the Baby's First Years (BFY) randomized trial to examine whether an unconditional cash transfer causes families to make opportunity moves to better quality neighborhoods. We use Intent to Treat linear regression models to test whether the BFY treatment, of receiving $333/month (vs. $20/month) for three years, leads to moves to neighborhoods of greater childhood opportunity. Overall, we find no relation between the BFY treatment and neighborhood opportunity ac

Exploring adolescent-adult connections, coping, and safety among minoritized youth in neighborhoods impacted by community violence.

Dyadic interviews were conducted with 32 youth ages 13-21 and their self-identified key adult supports to illuminate how adult supports help protect youth in communities impacted by high levels of violence. Interview transcripts were analyzed using thematic content analysis. Youth described choosing social interactions carefully, avoiding high-violence areas, and keeping busy with activities. Many youths discussed the necessity of minimizing contact with peers to avoid violence, resulting in isolation from friends and increased engagement with family at home. Adult supports reflected upon an i

Social vulnerability and prenatal diagnosis.

OBJECTIVES: There are limited data on how neighborhood-level risk factors affect the likelihood of having prenatal diagnosis. Neighborhood social vulnerability can be quantified and ranked using the social vulnerability index (SVI), a tool that measures the cumulative effect of external stressors in the local environment that may affect health outcomes. The objective of the study was to determine the relationship between SVI and prenatal diagnosis among pregnant patients who received genetic counseling. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of all pregnant patients who had genetic counseling at

Living in a low socioeconomic status neighbourhood is associated with lower cumulative ongoing pregnancy rate after IVF treatment.

RESEARCH QUESTION: Does an association exist between neighbourhood socioeconomic status (SES) and the cumulative rate of ongoing pregnancies after 2.5 years of IVF treatment? DESIGN: A retrospective observational study involving 2669 couples who underwent IVF or IVF and intracytoplasmic sperm injection treatment between 2006 and 2020. Neighbourhood SES for each couple was determined based on their residential postal code. Subsequently, SES was categorized into low (<p20), medium (p20-p80), and high (>p80). Multivariable binary logistic regression analyses were conducted, with the cumulative o

Residential Relocation of Community-Dwelling Older Adults: The Role of Physical Function and the Housing Environment.

ObjectiveMost older adults in the United States (U.S.) prefer to remain in their current housing as they age, but difficulty with mobility (e.g., walking) may make this more challenging. We estimated the association between difficulty with mobility (mobility) and residential relocation in the following year.MethodsWe included adults aged ≥65 participating in ≥2 rounds (years 2011-2019) of the National Health and Aging Trends Study. Mobility was self-reported and change in permanent address was captured by study staff. We used a prospective cohort design and logistic regression with a clusterin

Comparison of Aedes aegypti arbovirus transmission thresholds in two communities with differing water supply infrastructure.

BACKGROUND: To assess whether the 'economic boom' in the tropical seaport city of Barranquilla improved tapped water supplies to socio-economically poor neighbourhoods resulting in: (1) their reduced use for domestic water-storage in large (> 1,000-litre) custom-made cement tanks which are their principal Aedes aegypti breeding sites and (2) their pupae/person index (PPI) values to below their established 0.5-1.5 PPI arbovirus transmission-threshold value, compared to matched neighbourhoods in the: (a) pre-economic boom (2004) period in Barranquilla and (b) economically-neglected seaport city

Racial/ethnic differences in receipt of naloxone distributed by opioid overdose prevention programs in New York City.

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated racial/ethnic differences in the receipt of naloxone distributed by opioid overdose prevention programs (OOPPs) in New York City (NYC). METHODS: We used naloxone recipient racial/ethnic data collected by OOPPs from April 2018 to March 2019. We aggregated quarterly neighborhood-specific rates of naloxone receipt and other covariates to 42 NYC neighborhoods. We used a multilevel negative binomial regression model to assess the relationship between neighborhood-specific naloxone receipt rates and race/ethnicity. Race/ethnicity was stratified into four mutually exclusiv
