Protective effect of RIPK1-inhibitory compound in in vivo models for retinal degenerative disease.

Receptor interacting protein kinase 1 (RIPK1) plays a key role in necroptosis, which is a type of programmed necrosis that is involved in ocular diseases, including glaucoma and dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). We previously introduced RIPK1-inhibitory compound (RIC), which has biochemical characteristics and a mode of action that are distinct from those of the prototype RIPK1 inhibitor necrostatin-1. The intraperitoneal administration of RIC exerts a protective effect on retinal ganglion cells against a glaucomatous insult. In this study, we examined the protective effect of RIC on

Ocular dominance, coexistent retinal disease, and refractive errors in patients with cataract surgery.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this article is to highlight some common issues when planning cataract surgery in patients with preexisting ocular pathologies and to assess the role of ocular dominance in cataract surgery. RECENT FINDINGS: In addition to routine ocular examination, determination of ocular dominance and orthoptic evaluation for tropias, phorias, amblyopia, and diplopia can be helpful in planning for cataract surgery as these factors can affect postoperative outcomes. Although once controversial, cataract surgery by phacoemulsification is often a well tolerated and effective

Retinal vascular imaging in early life: insights into processes and risk of cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally. In recent years, studies have shown that the origins of CVD may be traced to vascular and metabolic processes in early life. Retinal vascular imaging is a new technology that allows detailed non-invasive in vivo assessment and monitoring of the microvasculature. In this systematic review, we described the application of retinal vascular imaging in children and adolescents, and we examined the use of retinal vascular imaging in understanding CVD risk in early life. We reviewed all publications with quantitati

Biology and therapy of inherited retinal degenerative disease: insights from mouse models.

Retinal neurodegeneration associated with the dysfunction or death of photoreceptors is a major cause of incurable vision loss. Tremendous progress has been made over the last two decades in discovering genes and genetic defects that lead to retinal diseases. The primary focus has now shifted to uncovering disease mechanisms and designing treatment strategies, especially inspired by the successful application of gene therapy in some forms of congenital blindness in humans. Both spontaneous and laboratory-generated mouse mutants have been valuable for providing fundamental insights into normal …

Retinal pathology detected by optical coherence tomography in an animal model of Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive procedure for analysis of retinal morphology. Significant changes in the thickness of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) in Parkinson's disease (PD) have been reported, and the current study was performed to examine whether such changes can also be detected in an animal model of PD. METHODS: Optical coherence tomography measurements of peripapillary RNFL thickness, macula volume, and foveal thickness were obtained from 10 normal and five 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-treated cynomolgus monkey

Alzheimer's disease and retinal neurodegeneration share a consistent stress response of the neurovascular unit.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by neuronal injury, activation of microglia and astrocytes, deposition of amyloid-β and secondary vessel degeneration. In the polycystic kidney disease (PKD) rat model, we observed neuronal injury, microglial activation and vasoregression. We speculated that this neuroretinal degeneration shares important pathogenetic steps with AD. Therefore, we determined the activation of astrocytes and the accumulation of amyloid-β in PKD retinae. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry of PKD retinae for vimentin, carboxymethyllysin, beta-Am

[Retinal capillary hemangioma and von Hippel-Lindau disease: diagnostic and therapeutic implications].

CLINICAL CASE: Man carrier of the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) gene, with long-onset loss of vision in left eye. He had a retinal capillary hemangioma (HCR) and diffuse cystic edema in posterior pole. The systemic study revealed bilateral kidney tumors. Laser photocoagulation was performed which produced a subretinal and vitreous hemorrhage that required vitrectomy. DISCUSSION: Retinal capillary hemangioma (HCR) is the earliest and most frequent manifestation of the von Hippel-Lindau disease. Its detection requires it to be treated early and to rule out other visceral lesions. Laser photocoagulati
