AIMS: Clinical presentation can provide a clue to the subcategories of fungal rhinosinusitis (FRS); however, tissue examination provides accurate classification. The aim was to analyse the incidence and histopathological spectrum of FRS.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A retrospective analysis of all the cases of rhinosinusitis reported in the last 5 years was carried out. Haematoxylin and eosin-stained sections along with special stains such as periodic acid-Schiff and Grocott's were examined. These cases were subclassified based on the presence of allergic mucin, mycelial elements and tissue reaction.

Primary cutaneous mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection noted most often in immunosuppressed individuals. We previously found that caspofungin synergized with amphotericin B lipid complex in treating murine mucormycosis. We now report a similarly enhanced activity of liposomal amphotericin combined with micafungin or anidulafungin in mice with disseminated mucormycosis. The efficacy of combination echinocandin-polyene therapy for mucormycosis is a class effect.

We present an efficient approach to the synthesis of a series of glycyrrhetinic acid derivatives. Six derivatives, five of them new compounds, were obtained through chemoenzymatic reactions in very good to excellent yield. In order to find the optimal reaction conditions, the influence of various parameters such as enzyme source, nucleophile:substrate ratio, enzyme:substrate ratio, solvent and temperature was studied. Otomycosis is a common disease in North Iraq. Of the 219 cases diagnosed clinically in Mosul Teaching Hospital seen during a 15 month period, 179 were due to fungus infection. The disease was more frequently encountered in young adults whose age was range from 16-30 years. The incidence of the disease was significantly higher in females (65.4 per cent), mainly housewives, than in males. Aspergillus species were the dominant isolated fungi (92.1 per cent).
