Screening bacterial phosphate solubilization with bulk-tricalcium phosphate and hydroxyapatite nanoparticles.

Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria can release phosphorus (P) from insoluble minerals and benefit either soil fitness or plant growth. Bulk sized P compounds have been suggested but little is known about solubilization of nanosized materials such as hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HANP). A screening of the initial 43 strains from vanilla rhizospheres for phosphate solubilization with bulk Ca3(PO4)2 was carried out. Subsequently, 6 strains were selected on bulk rock phosphate (RP) and HANP. Two kinetics experiments were run out regarding evaluation at 5, 10 and 20 days after inoculation (dai). Bacte…

CO2 Fertilization in Plants from Physiological Mechanisms to Sustainable Deployment.

Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) enhances C3 photosynthesis and often improves intrinsic water-use efficiency, yet the extent to whic … put belowground does not guarantee persistent soil-carbon storage because allocation, turnover, and rhizosphere priming determine retention. In controlled-environment agriculture, enrichment is most effective when CO2 supply is coordinated with light, climate, water, nutrients, crop load, energy use, and gas delivery. Future progress requires multi-factor, mu …

Recovery of slow-release multi-nutrient matrix from dairy manure through acid-mediated mild hydrothermal treatment.

Global agriculture increasingly demands sustainable soil fertilization strategies that balance nutrient efficiency with the preservation of … atrix, confirming that SRMNM resists nutrient loss in bulk soil while remaining bioavailable in the rhizosphere. All heavy metal concentrations remained below U.S. EPA biosolids standards (40 CFR 503.13) with limited bioavailability. This integrated approach uniquely valorizes dairy waste into a multi-nutrient matrix with slow-release potential combining amor …

Biocontrol potential and antifungal mechanism of Streptomyces angustmyceticus GD7-29 against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense tropical race 4.

Fusarium wilt of banana, especially caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense tropical race 4 (Foc TR4), is the most devastating disease limiting global banana production. With no effective chemical control and only limited resistant cultivars available, sustainable alternatives are urgently needed. Biocontrol is increasingly considered as an environmentally friendly strategy for managing this disease. In this study, an antagonistic strain, designated GD7-29, was isolated from healthy banana rhizosphere and identified as Streptomyces angustmyceticus based on its morphological, physiological,…

Alpine meadow degradation reshapes diazotroph community assembly and enhances putative recruitment of diazotrophs from legume soils to sedge soils.

INTRODUCTION: Biological nitrogen fixation is a key microbial process sustaining nutrient cycling and plant productivity in nitrogen-limited alpine meadows. However, how alpine meadow degradation reshapes diazotrophic community composition and assembly across different plant species, and how these changes relate to aboveground biomass, remain poorly understood. METHODS: We used the nifH gene as a molecular marker to investigate diazotrophic communities in rhizosphere and bulk soils associated with the legume Oxytropis ochrocephala, and the sedge Carex alatauensis in undegraded and degraded al…

Gibberellin-dependent brassinosteroid signaling modulates plant growth by optimizing nitrogen levels during salinity stress.

Low nitrogen (LN) and high salt stress are major constraints for plant growth and development. Under LN stress, plants typically show root elongation to increase nitrogen foraging from the rhizosphere, whereas high salt levels cause inhibition of root growth to avoid salinity stress-induced toxicity. To date, mechanisms and strategies of root adaptations in plants under combined LN and high salt stress remain poorly defined. Here, we provide evidence that Arabidopsis plants under LN stress show increased brassinosteroid (BR) signaling activity, which in turn suppresses salt stress-responsive p…

Mobile Genetic Elements as Key Drivers of Bacterial Evolution and Adaptation in Agroecosystems.

Mobile genetic elements (MGEs), including plasmids, transposons, integrative and conjugative elements, and phage-derived sequences, are central drivers of bacterial evolution in agroecosystems. By enabling horizontal gene transfer, MGEs allow soil- and plant-associated bacteria to rapidly acquire complex functional traits, facilitating adaptation to fluctuating environmental conditions and different agricultural management practices. In agricultural soils, MGEs underpin key microbial functions such as nutrient acquisition and cycling, stress tolerance, rhizosphere competence, and interactions …

Genomic signatures of host-range divergence in the generalist Beauveria bassiana and the specialist Beauveria brongniartii.

Entomopathogenic fungi of the genus Beauveria are widely used biological control agents that infect diverse insect hosts and can also associate with plants as rhizosphere colonizers and endophytes. Within this genus, Beauveria bassiana is a cosmopolitan generalist, whereas Beauveria brongniartii exhibits a narrower host range, primarily targeting soil-dwelling coleopteran larvae with limited evidence of plant colonization. To explore genomic differentiation associated with this ecological divergence, the commercially exploited B. brongniartii strain BIPESCO2 and B. bassiana ATHUM 4946 were seq…

Copper isotopic fractionation in soil-rice systems near the multimetallic mine: Implication for Cu uptake and transport mechanisms.

This study analyzed Cu isotopes in rice plants (root, straw, husk, and grains), Fe plaque and rhizosphere soil collected at sites downstream of the Dabaoshan sulfide mine in South China. Cu isotope fractionation from soil to the available pool (Δ65/63Cuavailable pool-soil = 0.24 ‰ to 0.64 ‰) was positively correlated with soil pH. Rice plants were enriched in light Cu isotopes under low available Cu supply (Δ65/63Cuwhole plant-available pool = -0.53 ‰ to -0.33 ‰), whereas the opposite result occurred under high available supply. Cu isotopes in straw were identical to or lighter than those in r…

Unlocking associative nitrogen fixation in Poaceae: molecular mechanisms, regulatory constraints, and pathways to sustainable productivity.

Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) is a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to nitrogen assimilation that extends beyond leguminous plants, where efficient nitrogen fixation occurs. Poaceae crops can also obtain nitrogen through associative nitrogen fixation (ANF) mediated by endophytic and rhizospheric diazotrophs, which typically contributes 10-30 kg N ha-1 yr.-1 to cereal crops, i.e., wheat, maize, rice, though certain tropical grasses, such as sugarcane may achieve up to 40-50 kg N ha-1 yr.-1 under optimal conditions. This review synthesizes recent advancements of ANF researc

Silicate fertilizer mitigates methane emissions from rice paddies by enriching Burkholderia to modulate microbial interactions.

Methane emissions from rice paddies are a major source of greenhouse gases, and silicate fertilizer (SF) derived from blast furnace slag has emerged as an environmentally friendly amendment that reduces methane release. SF modifies the soil redox environment by supplying electron acceptors such as iron, but the microbial mechanisms underlying methane mitigation remain unclear. Here, we combined metagenomic profiling, microbial isolation, and greenhouse experiments to show that SF consistently enriched Burkholderia vietnamiensis together with the methanotrophs in the rice rhizosphere. Inoculati…
