The geriatric population is at a high risk of developing deficiencies of essential micronutrients such as minerals, vitamins, and trace elements and their related deficiency signs and symptoms. Scarce data is available on the dietary intake of essential micronutrients among geriatric subjects in India. Hence, to fill the gap in the existing knowledge, a community-based cross-sectional study was conducted during 2015-2016 in District Nainital, Uttarakhand State, India. A total of 255 geriatric subjects were enrolled from 30 clusters (villages) identified by using population proportionate to siz

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines the effect of B vitamins on women and child health from recent evidence available.
RECENT FINDINGS: Findings were related to functional outcomes. In terms of foetal growth, although supplementation with B12 increased B12 status of nonpregnant and pregnant women and infants, maternal plasma homocysteine, which is related to multiple deficiencies of vitamin B12, B6, riboflavin or folate, has been shown to be associated with lower birth size rather than solely plasma B12. However, an experimental study with thiamine supplementation showed improvement in st

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this review is to provide an update on disorders of lipid metabolism affecting skeletal muscle exclusively or predominantly and to summarize recent clinical, genetic, and therapeutic studies in this field.
RECENT FINDINGS: Over the past 5 years, new clinical phenotypes and genetic loci have been described, unusual pathogenic mechanisms have been elucidated, and novel pharmacological approaches have been developed. At least one genetic defect responsible for the myopathic form of CoQ10 deficiency has been identified, causing a disorder that is allelic with the lat

Chronic alcohol consumption is a major risk factor for cancer of upper aero-digestive tract (oro-pharynx, hypopharynx, larynx and oesophagus), the liver, the colo-rectum and the breast. Evidence has accumulated that acetaldehyde is predominantly responsible for alcohol-associated carcinogenesis. Acetaldehyde is carcinogenic and mutagenic, binds to DNA and protein, destroys the folate molecule and results in secondary cellular hyper-regeneration. Acetaldehyde is produced by mucosal and cellular alcohol dehydrogenase, cytochrome P450 2E1 and through bacterial oxidation. Its generation and/or its

The changes induced by dietary xylitol in the gastrointestinal tract of the rat were investigated in relation to the phenomenon of vitamin-sparing. Within 18 days of consuming a synthetic diet, deficient in thiamin, riboflavin and pyridoxine, rats ceased to grow and began to lose weight rapidly. If xylitol was then included in the diet (10% w/w), the effect of the vitamin-deficient diet on growth was reversed. Moreover, within 3 days of the rats ingesting xylitol, the metabolism of this sugar polyol by the caecal microflora was increased 17-fold and the caecal concentrations of thiamin and thi

Migraine is a common disabling neurological disorder which is characterised by a recurring headache associated with a variety of sensory and autonomic symptoms. The pathophysiology of migraine remains not entirely understood, although many mechanisms involving the central and peripheral nervous system are now becoming clear. In particular, it is widely accepted that migraine is associated with energy metabolic impairment of the brain. The purpose of this review is to present an updated overview of the energy metabolism involvement in the migraine pathophysiology. Several biochemical, morpholog

In 403 elderly people residing in their own homes a dietary interview was undertaken with special reference to the intakes of vitamins and minerals. The group was randomly selected. The data were compared with the Recommended Dietary Allowances, Joint Nordic Recommendations and the absolute minimal necessary amounts. Intakes of folacin was low in 100% of the interviewed, intakes of cholecalciferol was low in 62% and in 83% intakes of pyridoxine was low as compared to the recommendations. The majority had sufficient amounts of ascorbic acid, thiamine, riboflavin, retinol and cobalamin from the

UNLABELLED: Rice, a global staple, often lacks essential nutrients due to milling, leading to micronutrient deficiencies or "hidden hunger." This study aimed to optimize the fortification of rice analogues with essential vitamins, focusing on nutrient retention during cooking. Using cold extrusion technology, rice analogues were produced from a mixture of rice flour, sodium alginate (1%), water (30%), and a nutrient ready mix (NRM) in varying proportions: low-dose (100%), intermediate-dose (125%), and High-dose (150%) of recommended levels. The fortification level was statistically optimized u

OBJECTIVES: Autism rates in the United States are increasing at a rate of 15% per year. Autistic children are diagnosed by age 3 when they have problems communicating and interacting socially. This study uses nutritional epidemiology and an ecologic study design to link the possible cause of autism to nutrition by creating autism rates for the 50 states of America and comparing them with published measures of infant nutrition such as duration of exclusive breast-feeding and participation in the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. The percentage of infants with measles, mumps, and rubel

The administration of multivitamins to patients receiving home parenteral nutrition (HPN) was decreased from once daily to three times weekly during the parenteral multivitamin shortage in 1997. Blood vitamin levels were measured to examine whether the decrement in the infused vitamins affected the levels. Six patients with normal renal and liver function, receiving HPN for 6 months to 10 years, were studied 6 months after the institution of 10 mL of multivitamins thrice weekly. Two patients with renal insufficiency who required hemodialysis and HPN were also studied. Multivitamin administrati

Multiple Acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD) is an autosomal recessive disorder of fatty acid oxidation. Most patients with late-onset MADD are clinically characterized by lipid storage myopathy with dramatic responsiveness to riboflavin treatment. Abnormalities of peripheral neuropathy have rarely been reported in patients with late-onset MADD. We describe six patients who presented with proximal limb weakness and loss of sensation in the distal limbs. Muscle biopsy revealed typical myopathological patterns of lipid storage myopathy and blood acylcarnitine profiles showed a combined elev

Glutaric acidemia type 2 (GA2), also called multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency, is an autosomal recessive disorder of fatty acid, amino acid, and choline metabolism resulting in excretion of multiple organic acids and glycine conjugates as well as elevation of various plasma acylcarnitine species (C4-C18). It is caused by mutations in the ETFA, ETFB, or ETFDH genes which are involved in the transfer of electrons from 11 flavin-containing dehydrogenases to Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10 ) of the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC). We report a patient who was originally reported as the fi

Xylitol was investigated for its ability to ameliorate hemolytic anemia induced by acetylphenylhydrazine in rabbits. Animal experiments were performed using two different concentrations of xylitol, a 5% and a 10% solution with a total dose of 2 g/kg body weight and infusion rates of 10 mg and 20 mg xylitol per kg body weight per minute respectively. Two doses of acetylphenylhydrazine (APH), 5 and 10 mg per kg, were injected intraperitoneally as hemolytic inducers in different groups of rabbits. All the rabbits infused with xylitol showed significantly less acute APH-induced hemolysis. The isot

Acyl-CoA dehydrogenase 9 (ACAD9) is a mitochondrial protein involved in oxidative phosphorylation complex I biogenesis. This protein also exhibits acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (ACAD) activity. ACAD9-mutated patients have been reported to suffer from primarily heart, muscle, liver, and nervous system disorders. ACAD9 mutation is suspected in cases of elevated lactic acid levels combined with complex I deficiency, and confirmed by ACAD9 gene analysis. At least 18 ACAD9-mutated patients have previously been reported, usually displaying severe cardiac involvement. We retrospectively studied nine additio
