OBJECTIVE: Rib fracture non-union is an uncommon complication of traumatic rib fractures. Our objective was to perform a scoping review of the literature for the management of rib fracture non-union. This included analysis of the variations in surgical technique, complications experienced, and reported outcomes.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review and searched databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Embase). We performed abstract and full-text screening, and abstracted data related to pre-operative assessment, surgical technique, complications, and reported outcome measures.

INTRODUCTION: The human rib provides a vital role in the protection of thoracic contents. Rib fractures are linked to injuries and health complications that can be fatal. Current clinical methods to assess fracture risk and bone quality are insufficient to quantify intra-element differences in bone mineral density (BMD) or to identify at-risk populations. A 73-year-old man was diagnosed with left lung cancer (cT3N0M0, stageⅡB). Left lower lobectomy and lymph node dissection by complete video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) was planned. At surgery, removal of the left lower lobe thorough intercostal space was difficult, and the dissection of the left 5th rib was required. After surgery, air leak appeared and reoperation was performed. At second surgery, lung injuries caused by a cut edge of the left 5th rib were found. Both lung injuries and the dissected rib were repaired, and the postoperative course was uneventful.

INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum (MIRPE) and cartilaginous rib excision (CRE) for slipping rib syndrome (SRS) are painful procedures. BACKGROUND: This case study evaluates the diagnosis and treatment of a 12 year old Caucasian male gymnast who had several diagnoses including an isolated first rib fracture, resultant pseudoarthrosis of the first rib, and the development of symptomatic thoracic outlet syndrome. We discuss the causes, prevalence, and suggestions for prompt diagnosis and treatment of these conditions in pediatric patients. Although all three conditions are rare in a child, this case highlights the importance of having a high clinical index of suspicion in recurrent pain in pre-pubertal athletes.

We present an original technique for reconstruction of the right forefoot after Chopart's amputation. The case report was of a 20-year-old man who was a nonsmoker without comorbidities.
