Facilitating Thought Progression via a Gamified Mobile Application for Depression: Possible Mediators of Outcomes.

Mobile health interventions represent a scalable and accessible alternative to traditional therapy, which often is out of reach due to high costs and societal stigma. Rumination is considered a key mechanism of emotional disorders and represents a potential treatment target for digital health interventions. The current study investigated the role of rumination as a mediator of the reduction in depression and anxiety reported after the use of a gamified mobile app based on the Facilitating Thought Progression (FTP) framework. One hundred-one adults with mild to moderate depression were randomiz

Exploring the role of repetitive negative thinking in the transdiagnostic context of depression and anxiety in children.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms in children is increasing, often presenting as co-occurring symptoms, yet screening for such co-occurrence remains inadequate. This study investigates repetitive negative thinking (RNT) as a transdiagnostic factor in the co-occurrence of depression and anxiety symptoms in children, aiming to develop novel early screening strategies. METHODS: Two cross-sectional surveys collected demographic information and self-reported measures of depression, anxiety, and RNT from primary school students in China. Structural equation modeling and

Preadolescent Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors: An Intensive Longitudinal Study of Risk Factors.

OBJECTIVE: Dramatic increases in rates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) among youth highlight the need to pinpoint early risk factors. This study used intensive longitudinal sampling to assess what the concurrent associations were between risk factors and STB status, how proximal changes in risk factors were related to STB status, and how risk factors prospectively predicted changes in STB status in a preadolescent sample enriched for early childhood psychopathology. METHOD: A total of 192 participants were included from the Parent-Child Interaction Therapy-Emotional Development (PCI

Uncertainty moderates the emotional consequences of reappraisal, social sharing, and rumination in daily life.

People must often wait for important but uncertain outcomes, like medical results or job offers. During such uncertain waiting periods, there is uncertainty around an outcome that people have minimal control over. Uncertainty makes these periods emotionally challenging, raising the possibility that emotion regulation strategies may have different effects while people wait for an uncertain outcome versus after they learn that outcome. To test this possibility, we conducted secondary analyses of an experience sampling study following 101 Belgian University students for 9 days as they waited for

Risk and Protective Effects of Need for Approval on Self-Injury in Adolescent Girls.

The goal of this research was to expand theoretical models of adolescent suicide by exploring whether individual differences in adolescent girls' need for approval (NFAavoid and NFAapproach) contribute to risk for, or protection against, self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITBs). We examined these novel hypotheses in a series of concurrent and longitudinal analyses in two samples of adolescent girls (Study 1: N = 89, Mage = 16.31 years, SD = 0.84, 67.4% White; Study 2: N = 229, Mage = 11.80, SD = 1.80, 49.8% White). Hierarchical linear and logistic regressions revealed that NFAavoid was ge

A serial cascade effect of cybervictimization and hostile rumination on the within-person change of moral disengagement.

OBJECTIVE: There is a lack of clarity regarding the developmental mechanisms underlying moral disengagement (a typical moral personality) at the within-person level. To address this issue, we explore the serial cascade effect of cybervictimization and hostile rumination. METHOD: The longitudinal relationships between cybervictimization, hostile rumination, and moral disengagement were explored among 1146 undergraduates, assessed four times (T1-T4) across 2 years. RESULTS: The random intercept cross-lagged panel model (RI-CLPM) analysis revealed that the random intercepts of all variables wer

Neuroticism affects nightmare distress through rumination.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The role of neuroticism in predicting nightmare distress have been highlighted, and negative coping style may contribute to this relationship, but how these variables interact is limited. The present study aimed to explore how neuroticism and ruminative response contribute to producing nightmare distress, and to explore whether sex influences this relationship. METHODS: We recruited 758 university students, aged an average of 19.07. A moderated mediation model was built to examine the relationships among neuroticism, rumination, and nightmare distress (measured by dream anxie

Trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder severity, and positive memories.

Positive memories play an important role in the aetiology and maintenance of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, most trauma research/clinical work has focused solely on the role of traumatic memories. Thus, we examined the relationship between count of retrieved positive memories and PTSD severity, factors associated with count of retrieved positive memories (i.e., rumination, negative/positive emotion dysregulation, fear of positive emotions), and the relationship between positive memory phenomenological domains and PTSD severity. The sample included 185 trauma-exposed participant

Cognitive and attentional vulnerability to depression in youth: A review.

Although depressive disorders are among the most common disorders in youth, highly efficacious treatments for childhood affective disorders are lacking. There is significant need to better understand the factors that contribute to the development and maintenance of depression in youth so that treatments can be targeted at optimal mechanisms. The aim of the current paper was to synthesize research on cognitive and neurobiological factors associated with youth depression, guided by De Raedt and Koster's model (2010) for vulnerability to depression in adults. Consistent with model predictions, th

Evaluating the Indirect Effects of Trait Mindfulness Facets on State Tripartite Components Through State Rumination and State Experiential Avoidance.

The present study investigated whether specific trait mindfulness facets indirectly influenced state negative affect (NA), positive affect (PA), and physiological hyperarousal (PH) through state rumination and state experiential avoidance. Participants (n = 360, 68% female) rated trait mindfulness facets, then completed an interview task about life experiences intended to elicit state NA, PA, and PH. After the interview task, participants completed measures of state NA, PA, and PH, and state measures of rumination and experiential avoidance. Indirect effect results indicated that the relations

Brazilian Portuguese version of the Anger Rumination Scale (ARS-Brazil).

Objective To describe the cross-cultural adaptation of the Anger Rumination Scale (ARS) for use in Brazil. Methods The cross-cultural adaptation followed a four-step process, based on specialized literature: 1) investigation of conceptual and item equivalence; 2) translation and back-translation; 3) pretest; and 4) investigation of operational equivalence. Results A final Brazilian version of the instrument (ARS-Brazil) was defined and is presented. Pretest results revealed that the instrument was generally well understood by adults as well as indicated a few modifications that were included i

Measurement Invariance of the Ruminative Responses Scale Across Gender.

Although women demonstrate higher levels of rumination than men, it is unknown whether instruments used to measure rumination have the same psychometric properties for women and men. To examine this question, we evaluated measurement invariance of the brooding and reflection subscales from the Ruminative Responses Scale (RRS) by gender, using data from four samples of undergraduates from three universities within the United States (N = 4,205). A multigroup confirmatory factor analysis revealed evidence for configural, metric, and scalar invariance of the covariance structure of the 10-item ver

Ruminative and dampening responses to positive affect in bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Although previous research has focused on distinguishing cognitive styles between Bipolar Disorder (BD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), little is known about differences in positive affect regulation between these affective groups. The aim of the present study was to extend previous research by investigating such differences between BD and MDD, and between the bipolar subtypes (BD-I vs. BD-II and predominant polarities), using large, clinical, outpatient samples. METHODS: In total, 298 participants (96 BD-I, 27 BD-II, and 175 MDD) were included. All completed the Responses to

Trait acceptance predicts fewer daily negative emotions through less stressor-related rumination.

People who are more accepting of their thoughts and feelings experience fewer negative emotions. Although several studies document the connection between acceptance and negative emotions, little, if any research, sheds light on how being receptive to one's internal experience results in less negativity in everyday life. In a daily diary study (N = 183), we found that people who were more accepting of their thoughts and feelings experienced fewer daily negative emotions, and this association was partly explained by less daily stressor-related rumination. The strength of this mediational pathway

When Does Co-Rumination Facilitate Depression Contagion in Adolescent Friendships? Investigating Intrapersonal and Interpersonal Factors.

Research supports the notion that adolescents' mental health is impacted by peers via contagion processes. A growing area of interest has been how co-rumination may influence depressive symptoms within friendships. The current study examined particular conditions under which co-rumination is especially likely to facilitate depression contagion. Participants were adolescents (N = 480, 49% female, M age = 14.6 years, 59.5% European American) paired in friendship dyads and assessed over 9 months. Characteristics of the adolescent (personal distress), of the friend (excessive reassurance seeking),

Rumination and self-defining memories in the context of health concerns.

Individuals with health anxiety report experiencing a strong sense of vulnerability to illness. Such beliefs may be driven by the biased recollection of past illness-related events. However, little research has explored the role of memory in health anxiety. In other disorders, rumination has also been identified as a process that leads individuals to recall memories dominated by the content of their concerns. This study examined the proposition that rumination might impact the content of "self-defining" autobiographical memories among 60 college students with varying health anxiety (35% with c

The Pain-Related Cognitive Processes Questionnaire: Development and Validation.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive processes may be characterized as how individuals think, whereas cognitive content constitutes what individuals think. Both cognitive processes and cognitive content are theorized to play important roles in chronic pain adjustment, and treatments have been developed to target both. However, the evaluation of treatments that target cognitive processes is limited because extant measures do not satisfactorily separate cognitive process from cognitive content. The current study aimed to develop a self-report inventory of potentially adaptive and presumed maladaptive attentiona

Applying a cognitive-emotional model to nonsuicidal self-injury.

The recently proposed cognitive-emotional model of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) draws on emotion regulation models and social cognitive theory to understand the onset, maintenance, and cessation of NSSI. We tested the prediction of the model that the relationship between emotional reactivity and NSSI is moderated by specific cognitions about self-injury (i.e., self-efficacy to resist NSSI, NSSI outcome expectancies), emotion regulation, and rumination. A sample of 647 university students aged 17-25 years (M = 19.92, SD = 1.78) completed self-report measures of the constructs of interest. As

Training the removal of negative information from working memory: A preliminary investigation of a working memory bias modification task.

Rumination in depressed adults is associated with a bias toward retaining negative information in working memory. We developed a task designed to modify this cognitive bias by having subjects repeatedly practice removing negative words from working memory, thereby enabling them to retain positive and neutral words. To assess the efficacy of this task, we recruited 60 adults who reported elevated repetitive negative thought (RNT) and randomly assigned them to receive a single administration of either the working memory bias modification (WMBM) task or a control task. Subjects in the WMBM condit

Attachment and brooding rumination during children's transition to adolescence: the moderating role of effortful control.

Brooding rumination is a maladaptive form of emotion regulation and confers a risk for psychopathology. Insecure attachment and low cognitive self-regulation are important antecedents of brooding. Yet, little is known about the developmental interplay between these two systems. Thus, we tested how children's attachment and cognitive self-regulation, conceptualized as effortful control (EC), interact to predict brooding. The participants in the three-wave longitudinal study were n = 157 children (10 to 14 years) and their mothers. Children reported their attachment and brooding, and mothers rep
