Introduction: Suicide rates among individuals working in agriculture remain disproportionately high in the United States. Although farming-related stressors and coping strategies are documented, gaps remain in understanding how farmers sustain themselves psychologically amid chronic stress and why elevated suicide risk persists despite apparent resilience. Purpose: This study sought to explore the major stressors of farming, coping strategies used by farmers, and their barriers to help-seeking, with the goal of informing suicide prevention and mental health interventions. Methods: Fourteen sem

Despite the availability of clinical guidelines aimed at managing pregnancy complications, maternal deaths related to obstetric emergencies remain unacceptably high in South Africa, especially in rural provinces like Limpopo. These preventable deaths are often linked to delayed response to complications, poor adherence to protocols, and lack of essential resources. The study aimed to explore the experiences of health professionals regarding the implementation of maternal guidelines used to manage obstetric emergencies. The study adopted a qualitative, descriptive, and explorative design. Data

INTRODUCTION: Most studies on loss to follow-up (LTFU) among people living with HIV are done in urban Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) centers that have electronic medical records system. However, there are limited studies in ART centers in rural areas that rely solely on paper-based medical records (PBMR). This study aimed to determine the incidence, trends, and predictors of LTFU among people living with HIV at a rural health facility in Ghana that rely on PBMR.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis of 232 HIV registrants who received care at St. Theresa's Hospital, Nandom Municipality, Ghan…

BACKGROUND: Children in rural communities are of the most vulnerable populations in Canada. Living in a rural community has mental health and well-being implications for these children, particularly regarding their access to mental health services. By comparison to talk therapies, which are often costly, art-based interventions are accessible financially, geographically (i.e., offered in academic settings), and across abilities. Qualitative research of art-based approaches with vulnerable children is limited. Despite this, art-based interventions have allowed children to express their feelings

BACKGROUND: Screening, brief intervention, and referral (SBIR) is an evidence-based, comprehensive health promotion approach commonly implemented to reduce alcohol and substance use. Implementation research on SBIR demonstrate that patients find it acceptable, reduces hospital costs, and it is effective. However, SBIR implementation in hospital settings for multiple risk factors (fruit and vegetable consumption, physical activity, alcohol and tobacco use) is still emergent. More evidence is needed to guide SBIR implementation for multiple risk factors in hospital settings.
OBJECTIVE: To explo

Vaccine hesitancy has played a major role in slowing the global COVID-19 response. Using cross-sectional, primarily qualitative data collected in four rural districts in Zambia, we aimed to explore community perceptions of COVID-19 disease and vaccines, including perceived motivators, cues to action, benefits, and barriers to vaccine uptake as guided by the Health Belief Model. In-depth interviews (IDIs) were conducted in late 2021 with women of reproductive age who were enrolled in an early childhood development study. Although two-thirds of the 106 respondents reported low perceived risk of

BACKGROUND: The convergence of infectious diseases and non-communicable diseases in South Africa is challenging to health systems. In this analysis, we assessed the multimorbidity health needs of individuals and communities in rural KwaZulu-Natal and established a framework to quantify met and unmet health needs for individuals living with infectious and non-communicable diseases.
METHODS: We analysed data collected between May 25, 2018, and March 13, 2020, from participants of a large, community-based, cross-sectional multimorbidity survey (Vukuzazi) that offered community-based HIV, hyperte

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic pushed governments worldwide to implement unprecedented mitigation measures, including safe-distancing, lockdowns, disruption of non-essential services, border closures and travel restrictions, with both potential to affect rural and urban service-users differently and unintended consequences including reductions in sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. We aimed to explore rural-urban differences in progress and challenges in SRH services provision in Cambodia, particularly during initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In response to breast cancer diagnostic regional wait times exceeding both national and provincial standards and to symptomatic patient referrals for diagnostic mammography taking longer than abnormal screening mammography referrals, the Rae Fawcett Breast Health Clinic (RFBHC) was opened in 2017 in a mid-sized Canadian hospital serving both urban and rural-remote communities. We investigated whether the RFBHC improved wait times to breast cancer diagnosis, improved compliance with national and provincial breast cancer standards, and decreased the wait time disparity associated with referral s

PURPOSE: Undiagnosed Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) results in high morbidity, disability and mortality in India. Effective strategies for active COPD screening in community settings are needed to increase early identification, risk reduction and timely management. The objective of this study was to test the diagnostic accuracy of a sequential two-step screening strategy to detect COPD, implemented by community health workers (CHWs), among adults aged ≥40 years in a rural area of North India.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Trained CHWs screened all consenting (n=3256) eligible adults in

METHODS: We conducted 8 focus group discussions with a total of 51 HCWs comprising nurses, lay counsellors, social workers, and dieticians. The HCWs were selected from 23 health facilities in a rural South African health district by purposive sampling. Data were transcribed verbatim, and data analysis followed qualitative thematic analysis.
RESULTS: A high proportion of HCWs had no formal training in pediatric disclosure and some had never disclosed to children. Those who routinely disclosed approached disclosure as an ongoing process that unfolded over time. They ensured caregiver readiness

BACKGROUND: Guinea undertook health workforce reform in 2016 following the Ebola outbreak to overcome decades-long shortages and maldistribution of healthcare workers (HCWs). Specifically, over 5000 HCWs were recruited and deployed to rural health districts and with a signed 5-year commitment for rural medical practice. Governance structures were also established to improve the supervision of these HCWs. This study assessed the effects of this programme on local health systems and its influence on HCWs turnover in rural Guinea.
