The role of explicit and implicit self-esteem in the relationship between childhood trauma and adult depression and anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Self-esteem is an important psychological concept that can be measured explicitly (reflective processing) and implicitly (associative processing). The current study examined 1) the association between childhood trauma (CT) and both explicit and implicit self-esteem, and 2) whether self-esteem mediated the association between CT and depression/anxiety. METHODS: In 1479 adult participants of the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety, CT was assessed with a semi-structured interview, depression/anxiety symptoms with self-report questionnaires and explicit and implicit self-este

Hypnosis therapy for self-esteem in pediatric neurology practice: A pilot exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: A number of pediatric conditions are chronic, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), idiopathic epilepsies, or anxiety disorder. They all have an impact on self-esteem with consequences on the quality of life. Hypnosis is a therapeutic strategy that consists in putting into trance an individual who becomes receptive to appropriate suggestions. Such an approach is now considered a simple and safe therapy with limited cost. The aim of the present study was to show the feasibility of hypnosis for improving self-esteem in children with the aforementioned conditions.

Self-esteem instability might be more characteristic of borderline personality disorder than affective instability: Findings from an e-diary study with clinical and healthy controls.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is commonly characterized by pervasive instability. Affective instability, despite being a diagnostic criterion in the DSM-5, is commonly seen as a transdiagnostic feature, but recent studies have brought new attention to the importance of self-esteem instability as a potential defining feature of BPD. However, evidence is lacking regarding whether heightened self-esteem instability is a specific feature of BPD when patients with BPD are compared to clinical controls. Using ambulatory assessment, we examined self-esteem instability and affective instabilit

Is self-image, in reference to the gravitational vertical, altered in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis? A multicenter, single-blind, case-control study.

PURPOSE: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is associated with perturbation of orthostatic postural control. In humans, orthostatic postural control is organized around the gravitational vertical (GV). Perception of the GV involves a bottom-up process (central integration of multisensorial information) and a top-down process that uses cognitive mechanisms relying on body image. This study hypothesized that AIS would be associated with an erroneous central representation of verticality. The objective was to demonstrate an altered top-down process of sense of verticality in AIS. METHODS: Thi

From doctor to incendiary nun: the importance of analysing the pathways of trauma.

Childhood traumatic experiences have often been associated with the development of severe psychiatric disorders or, at least, with serious impairment in the victims' developing personality. Emotional abuse and neglect can cause gradual damage to Self-image and to models of self-in-relation to Others. We report a case of a woman who underwent psychiatric evaluations for marriage annulment. The issues were the as-sessment of the outcomes of early psychic trauma and the examination of the remaining individual capacities from a judicial standpoint. The examiners found that the memories of the woma

Relations between implicit attitudes towards eating disorder stimuli and disordered eating symptoms among at-risk college women.

This study examined implicit attitudes towards different eating disorder (ED) relevant stimuli- emaciation, hard-exercise, the self, and eating related stimuli-and their relationship with explicit ED symptoms in two symptomatic samples of college-aged women. Study 1 found that positive implicit attitudes towards eating and self-relevant images were associated with greater state body image satisfaction and self-esteem and with less ED-related intentions. Study 2 found that positive implicit attitudes towards eating and self-relevant images were associated with less trait global ED psychopatholo

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of lipodystrophy on self-esteem and adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) in people living with HIV (PLHIV). A cross-sectional and comparative study was carried out in an infection clinic, with 125 patients with lipodystrophy and 125 without lipodystrophy. Sociodemographic, clinical and epidemiological data were collected, using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and Assessment of Adherence to Antiretroviral Treatment Questionnaire (CEAT-VIH). This is a prospective population-based cohort study entitled Bagé Cohort Study of Aging, from Rio Grande do Sul. A total of 1,593 elderly adults were interviewed in the baseline study (2008) and 735 between September 2016 and August 2017. The "urinary incontinence (UI)" exposure was assessed in the baseline study and the outcomes "negative self-perceived health" and "depressive sympt

Self-esteem as a catalyst for change in adolescent inpatients with anorexia nervosa: a pilot randomised controlled trial.

PURPOSE: To determine the potential effectiveness of a six-session manualised self-esteem group using CBT approaches when given as an adjuvant to adolescent inpatients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN). METHODS: Using a randomised controlled design, 50 girls aged 12-17 years with AN were assigned to either self-esteem group with treatment as usual (TAU) (n = 25) or TAU alone (n = 25). 50/78 (64%) consented to be randomised. Both groups completed self-report measures of self-esteem and eating disorder psychopathology at three time points to measure the potential effectiveness of the treatment. Qualit

Why is Self-Esteem Higher Among American than Chinese Early Adolescents? The Role of Psychologically Controlling Parenting.

Little is known about why American youth tend to have higher self-esteem than do Chinese youth. This research examined the role of psychologically controlling parenting during early adolescence. 825 youth (48% females; Mage = 12.73 years) in the United States and China reported on their self-esteem and parents' psychological control every 6 months from the fall of 7th grade to spring of 8th grade. Both American and Chinese youth's self-esteem decreased over time, but American youth consistently had higher self-esteem. American parents were less psychologically controlling than were Chinese par

Factors associated with resilience among Black women living with HIV and histories of trauma.

In the United States, Black women living with HIV face various individual (e.g. trauma) and structural (e.g. racism) adversities. However, resilience is understudied among Black women living with HIV. A total of 100 Black women living with HIV in the United States completed measures of resilience, general self-efficacy, self-esteem, post-traumatic growth, trauma symptoms, trauma-related cognitions, and depressive symptoms. Regressions controlling for age and education indicated that higher resilience was associated with higher general self-efficacy (β = .39, p < .001), higher self-esteem (β =
