Treatments for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) that circumvent the barriers to accessing mental health care in older adults are needed. The main goal of this multisite randomized controlled trial was to evaluate the efficacy of CBT-based self-help guided by a lay provider (LP) for generalized anxiety (i.e., threshold or subthreshold GAD) in older adults. Participants (≥ 60 years) were block randomized based on diagnosis to an experimental (n = 75) or wait-list control group (n = 75). Experimental group participants used a manual presenting CBT-based readings and exercises and received brief

INTRODUCTION: Treatment expectations play an important role in psychotherapy initiation and early treatment engagement may influence whether individuals decide to seek help. Negative expectations, concerns about burden, and anticipated risks may be particularly relevant for individuals with social anxiety. However, little is known about how different ways of framing treatment expectations influence help-seeking intentions. This study examined whether brief, role-model-based video interventions can modify treatment expectations and increase the subjective likelihood of seeking psychotherapy.

This case study investigates changes in technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) self-efficacy in a group of instructors engaged in a Power of Place Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience (PoP-CURE) Professional Development (PD) Community of Practice. We hypothesized that mentored and iterative PD would create a community of practice in which instructors become confident adopters of evidence-based technological PoP-CURE practices, promoting the overall development of instructor TPACK self-efficacy. Previous work on PD personas helped to inform our work by guiding observation

This study aimed to develop and validate a recovery scale for families of individuals with gambling problems. An operational definition of family recovery was developed from conceptual and empirical studies. An item pool was generated based on this definition and refined following COSMIN guidelines. Study 1 assessed content and face validity with seven experts and seven members of self-help groups for families affected by gambling problems. Study 2 used a web-based survey with a 2-week retest to examine psychometric properties. Analyses included item analysis, internal consistency, test-retest…

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use remains a major public health concern, and although preventive alcohol self-help interventions aim to support individuals in need of indicated prevention, they continue to face challenges related to low engagement and high attrition. Chatbots, also known as conversational agents (CAs), powered by artificial intelligence, may enhance engagement by offering personalized guidance and 24/7 availability. Yet, user perspectives on CAs in preventive alcohol self-help care remain largely unexplored.
OBJECTIVE: This paper aimed to gain insight into the diverse factors shaping t

As young adults transition into adulthood they must develop effective self-regulation techniques to help them navigate the heightened expectations of independence placed upon them. During this challenging developmental stage, mentors and other supportive individuals can facilitate co-regulation processes that help young adults reach self-regulation. This qualitative research identifies and characterizes supportive processes of regulation that graduate student mentors engaged in as part of their mentorship interactions with undergraduate mentees with learning disabilities and attention-deficit

Across the lifespan, suicide mortality rates are highest among older adults, yet research on self-harm in later life remains limited. This study explores how self-reported maladaptive personality traits (measured by the PID-5-BF+M) are associated with self-harm in older adults, and whether there are potential differences according to the type of self-harm behaviors (indirect, direct, and the co-occurrence of these two) in this age group. From a convenience sample of 790 adults aged 60 years and older, 102 participants were selected using a matched-pair design. Regression models showed that thr

BACKGROUND: Vaginal self-sampling with HPV-DNA tests is a promising primary screening method for cervical cancer. However, women's experiences, concerns and the acceptability of such tests in low-resource settings remain unknown.
METHODS: In India, Nicaragua, and Uganda, a mixed-method design was used to collect data from surveys (N = 3,863), qualitative interviews (N = 72; 20 providers and 52 women) and focus groups (N = 30 women) on women's and providers' experiences with self-sampling, women's opinions of sampling at home, and their future needs.
RESULTS: Among surveyed women, 90% provide

The current qualitative research studied representations of illness posttreatment from a heart transplant group, a panic disorder group, and a tic disorder group. All three groups were preoccupied with perceptions about the impact of the illness, perception of self and the perception of how others view the ill person. The heart transplant group seem to adopt an active style of coping compared to the panic disorder group who presented a more passive, anticipatory mode of coping, and the tic group who were preoccupied with control over the perceptions of others. This qualitative information coul

This study describes the adjustment of 70 adults with Williams syndrome, in terms of self-help skills, independence, and occupational levels. Although the overall mean IQ of the group (62.00) was within the mild mental handicap range, relatively few individuals were able to attain a high level of independence or cope with the demands of employment. Adaptive behavior scores were significantly below chronological age. Outcome measures were compared with available data on other groups of adults of similar age and level of intellectual impairment. Implications for the community care of adults with

A day hospital group treatment program is detailed which could offer effective treatment to many patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa who would otherwise require inpatient treatment. Important clinical advantages over an inpatient program are described. The psychotherapy is cognitive-behavioral oriented and is done in groups. A multi-disciplinary team approach is used. The day hospital treatment program includes psychological, social and eating-related interventions. Main characteristics are the motivation-phase, the contact between patients of different therapy-phases, the invol

In helping persons with AIDS recognize and understand their spiritual needs, it is beneficial to distinguish between spirituality and organized religion. Spirituality is concerned with meaning, hope, self-identity and self-worth, and forgiveness and reconciliation and is determined by the way persons structure their relationships with God, the world, others, and themselves. Organized religion is concerned with the human experience of the holy. It embodies this experience in a particular creed, cult, and community and is meant to serve the spirituality of its members. Contextual therapy of phobias is based upon the observation, analysis and conceptualization of phobic behavior as it changes in its natural contexts. Detailed, tape-recorded studies of phobic behavior changing in context were used to develop concepts and treatment of the processes governing change. Contextual therapy has been applied to individual, group, and self-help treatment of phobias.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is common among people with substance abuse histories and a burden for U.S. veterans in particular. This study compares self-reported HCV between 1,652 veterans and 48,013 nonveterans who received public-sector substance abuse treatment in Los Angeles between 2006 and 2010. A higher percentage of veterans than nonveterans reported HCV (6.5% vs. 3.8%, p < .0001). Homelessness and mental illness explained, respectively, 8.6% and 7.1% of the difference in HCV between the two groups, adjusting for other variables. This study presents a qualitative analysis of the role of the self-help group Overeaters Anonymous (OA) in the treatment experiences of women with bulimia nervosa. It specifies how various elements of OA facilitate or maintain recovery. Using focus groups and individual interviews, data were collected from 26 women who met the criteria for bulimia nervosa. Data analysis revealed that those participants used five OA skills or strategies. These included: (1) OA meeting attendance and participation, (2) interaction with a sponsor, (3) processing (i.e., writing and journaling), (4) spirituality (i
