The selective child welfare funnel. Children's exposure to violence and CWS investigations in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Research indicates that child welfare services reach out to children exposed to violence unequally depending on the child's social background, living conditions and violence type. OBJECTIVE: Based on the notion of selective recognition of vulnerability and risk, this study explores which children CWS pursue to a complete child welfare investigation. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: A register was set up including all children (n = 1764) between 7 and 12 years that were investigated for suspected exposure to violence by CWS in the municipality of the City of Stockholm, Sweden, in 2019.

Exome sequencing in individuals with cardiovascular laterality defects identifies potential candidate genes.

The birth prevalence of laterality defects is about 1.1/10,000 comprising different phenotypes ranging from situs inversus totalis to heterotaxy, mostly associated with complex congenital heart defects (CHD) and situs abnormalities such as intestinal malrotation, biliary atresia, asplenia, or polysplenia. A proportion of laterality defects arise in the context of primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) accompanied by respiratory symptoms or infertility. In this study, exome sequencing (ES) was performed in 14 case-parent trios/quattros with clinical exclusion of PCD prior to analysis. Moreover, all c

Primary Disease, Sex, and Racial Differences in Health-Related Quality of Life in Adolescents and Young Adults with Heart Failure.

Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is an important clinical and research trial endpoint in adult heart failure and has been shown to predict mortality and hospitalizations in adult heart failure populations. HRQOL has not been adequately studied in the growing pediatric and young adult heart failure population. This study described HRQOL in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with heart failure and examined primary disease, sex, race, and other correlates of HRQOL in this sample. Participants in this cross-sectional, single-center study included adolescent and young adults with heart failu

Complex neurocysticercosis lesions on imaging: Explained through correlative histomorphology.

OBJECTIVES: Neurocysticercosis, the commonest neuro-parasite, sometimes presents as complex ring enhancing lesion causing diagnostic dilemma … f intestinal Taenia. The complex lesions were conglomeration of multiple communicating cysts with a single parent cyst and multiple daughter cysts. The parent cysts contained a solitary variably degenerated scolex, had thicker walls and associated chronic inflammation. The remaining cysts of the lesion complex contained no scolex, had poorly organized walls, tu …

Iatrogenic pericallosal artery aneurysm after endovascular procedure.

Iatrogenic brain aneurysms are rare and are usually a result of direct trauma to the arterial wall during various neurosurgical or endovascular procedures. Single cases of pericallosal posttraumatic and postsurgical aneurysms were previously reported. Herein, we report the first confirmed case of iatrogenic pericallosal artery aneurysm caused by an arterial wall injury during the endovascular treatment of another aneurysm. A 50-year-old woman with ruptured anterior communicating artery aneurysm was initially treated with balloon-assisted coiling. During the procedure the tip of a microwire ins

Genome-Wide Scan for Parent-of-Origin Effects in a sub-Saharan African Cohort With Nonsyndromic Cleft Lip and/or Cleft Palate (CL/P).

OBJECTIVE: Nonsyndromic cleft lip and/or cleft palate (NSCL/P) have multifactorial etiology where genetic factors, gene-environment interactions, stochastic factors, gene-gene interactions, and parent-of-origin effects (POEs) play cardinal roles. POEs arise when the parental origin of alleles differentially impacts the phenotype of the offspring. The aim of this study was to identify POEs that can increase risk for NSCL/P in humans using a genome-wide dataset. METHODS: The samples (174 case-parent trios from Ghana, Ethiopia, and Nigeria) included in this study were from the African only genom

Patterns of allele distribution in a hybrid population of the Cryptococcus neoformans species complex.

BACKGROUND: The sister yeast species Cryptococcus neoformans (serotype A) and Cryptococcus deneoformans (serotype D) are causative agents of deadly cryptococcosis and fungal meningoencephalitis. These haploid yeasts can hybridise in nature, giving rise to AD hybrids that are predominantly diploid or aneuploid. Despite their increasing prevalence in clinical settings, much remains unknown about the allelic distribution patterns in AD hybrid strains. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to characterise allele distributions in AD hybrids derived from the same basidium as well as from multiple basidia in

Childhood social adversity and risk of depressive symptoms in adolescence in a US national sample.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood social adversity has been associated with an increased risk of depression and other psychiatric disorders in adolescence and early adulthood. However, the role of timing and accumulation of adversities has not yet been established in longitudinal studies. We examined the association between childhood adversities and adolescent depressive symptoms, and the impact of timing and accumulation of adversity. METHOD: Longitudinal data were obtained from the Child Development Supplement to the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (n=2223), a nationally representative survey of US famil

Gene-environment interactions and the risk of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia: exploring the role of maternal folate genes and folic Acid fortification.

Few studies have evaluated the interaction of folic acid fortification and folate metabolic genes on the risk of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Because folate status is influenced by both intake and genetic variation, the objective of this study was to explore maternal folate metabolic gene-folic acid fortification interactions and the risk of childhood ALL. The study population consisted of 120 ALL case-parent triads recruited from Texas Children's Cancer Center between 2003 and 2010. For this analysis, we focused on 13 maternal single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 5-methy

Quality of life and emotional functioning in youth with chronic migraine and juvenile fibromyalgia.

SUMMARY: Chronic pain in children is associated with significant negative impact on social, emotional, and school functioning. Previous studies on the impact of pain on children's functioning have primarily used mixed samples of pain conditions or single pain conditions (eg, headache and abdominal pain) with relatively small sample sizes. As a result, the similarities and differences in the impact of pain in subgroups of children with chronic pain have not been closely examined. OBJECTIVE: To compare pain characteristics, quality of life, and emotional functioning among youth with pediatric c

Children working on the streets in Brazil: predictors of mental health problems.

The objective of this study was to determine which factors predict higher risk for mental health problems in children working on the streets. We studied a sample of families that had at least one child working on the streets, from October 2008 to March 2009. The instruments applied were the parent version strengths and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ), the childhood trauma questionnaire (CTQ) for children and caregivers, the WorldSAFE core questionnaire, the global assessment of relational functioning scale (GARF), the schedule for affective disorders and schizophrenia for school-age children

Acute physiologic effects of secondhand smoke exposure in children.

INTRODUCTION: We investigated the hypothesis that exhaled carbon monoxide (eCO), heart rate (HR), and blood pressure (BP) would increase acutely in exposed but not in unexposed children. METHODS: In a nonrandomized controlled design, parent-child dyads were assigned to groups based on exposure: child subjects, 7-18 years of age, exposed to smoking daily in the home (exposed) or with no household exposure (unexposed control). HR, BP, and eCO were measured before and after exposure to a parent smoking 1 cigarette (exposed) or a time-lapse equivalent (control). The primary analysis compared mean

Nefazodone poisoning: toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics using continuous data collection.

Nefazodone overdose has been reported infrequently. The commonest effects reported are drowsiness, nausea, dizziness, and vomiting, less commonly hypotension and bradycardia. We report a case of single-agent nefazodone poisoning. Serial drug concentrations were taken for quantification of parent drug and metabolites. Clinical findings were documented every 1 to 2 hours. We modeled both the toxicokinetics of nefazodone and correlated this with clinical effects and electrocardiograph (ECG) abnormalities. A 16-year-old female took 2.4 g of nefazodone. She had significant drowsiness in the first 6

Complex genetic determinants of susceptibility to methylxanthine-induced locomotor activity changes.

The intent of this study was to investigate the role of inheritance in the determination of susceptibility to methylxanthine-induced behavioral changes. Two strains of inbred mice, SWR and CBA, which differ significantly in their response to caffeine- and theophylline-induced stimulation of locomotor activity, were used in classical genetic crosses to produce reciprocal F1 hybrids, reciprocal backcross progeny F2 progeny. Theophylline dose response curves in the reciprocal F1 hybrid strains were identical to each other and to their methylxanthine-responsive (CBA) parent. These results indicate

Hematin-derived anticoagulant. Generation in vitro and in vivo.

Prolongation of clotting times produced by hematin was investigated both in vitro and in vivo. Hematin-derived anticoagulant (HDA) was found to be due to a degradative product or derivative of hematin, and was generated in vitro in standing (aging) aqueous solutions of the parent compound. Generation of HDA in vitro was inhibited by antioxidants. The anticoagulant effect of HDA was inhibited by freshly prepared hematin, fresh Sn-protoporphyrin, imidazole, or the iron chelator desferrioxamine. Ferrioxamine did not inhibit HDA, and inhibition by imidazole was reversed with ferric citrate, sugges

Family structure and family satisfaction as factors of adolescents' autonomous motivation, cheating, and academic achievement.

There is considerable evidence showing that children growing up in two-parent intact families are more academically successful than children from other family structures. However, little is known about the psychological mechanisms underlying the relationship between family structure and academic achievement. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the role of satisfaction with family relationships as a mediator of the associations of family structure with academic motivation, attitude toward school, and academic achievement. Using a representative sample of Russian adolescents in grade

Self- and other-harm in mass shooters: A dual-harm analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Research suggests that individuals engaging in both self- and other-harm (viz., dual-harm) face increased risks of negative outcomes compared to those with single-harm (either self- or other-harm) or no-harm histories. This study examines mass shooters through this lens and compares them across multiple risk factors. METHODS: This study analyzed 197 U.S. mass shooters in public incidents with four or more fatalities (August 1966 to January 2023), using The Violence Project Database. Nearly all were men (97.5 %), with a mean age of 34 (M = 33.97, SD = 12.65, range = 11-72). Parti
