Facial lesions in frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA): Clinicopathological features in a series of 12 cases.

BACKGROUND: Facial lesions in frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) have been poorly described in published series. OBJECTIVE: We sought to describe facial lesions in FFA. METHODS: We reviewed our series of 55 cases of FFA, selecting 12 cases with clinically significant facial lesions. We performed a histologic study of these lesions. RESULTS: In addition to the observations already described in the literature such as facial papules or follicular red dots, we observed perifollicular and diffuse erythema, sometimes with a reticular pattern, and the gradual appearance of pigmented macules on facia

Differentially expressed genes associated with tryptophan-dependent pigment synthesis in Malassezia furfur--a comparison with the recently published genome of Malassezia globosa.

Malassezia (M.) furfur, a commensal organism found on the human skin, produces a wide range of pigments and fluorochromes when cultured with tryptophan as a sole nitrogen source. Some compounds of this pigment metabolism may provide an explanation for clinical characteristics of pityriasis versicolor (PV), a frequent skin disease in humans characterised by long-lasting pigmentary changes. Malassezia globosa is currently regarded as the causative agent of PV, but tryptophan-dependent pigment production has not yet been demonstrated in this species. In a previous study, we identified M. furfur g

Clofazimine-induced Hair Pigmentation.

A 45-year-old man was treated with WHO multibacillary multidrug therapy for borderline leprosy and high dose daily Clofazimine for lepra reaction. Along with the expected side effect of skin pigmentation, the patient also noticed darkening of previously grey hair. This colour persisted eight months after completing multibacillary multidrug therapy.

Müllerian agenesis, hypoplasia of distal extremities, unusual dermatoglyphics, and pigmentation.

The case of a 17-year-old girl with müllerian agenesis, hypoplasia of the distal extremities, unusual dermatoglyphic findings, and mottled skin pigmentation is reported. The family history indicates that the maternal grandmother's sisters were similarly affected with müllerian agenesis, suggesting a dominant gene with variable penetrance in this family.

No Causal Association between 25-Hydroxyvitamin D and Features of Skin Aging: Evidence from a Bidirectional Mendelian Randomization Study.

Data from in vitro experiments suggest that vitamin D reduces the rate of skin aging, whereas population studies suggest the opposite, most likely due to confounding by UV exposure. We investigated whether there are causal associations between 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations and features of skin aging in a bidirectional Mendelian randomization study. In the Rotterdam Study (N = 3,831; 58.2% women, median age 66.5 years) and Leiden Longevity Study (N = 661; 50.5% women, median age 63.1 years), facial skin aging features (perceived age, wrinkling, pigmented spots) were assessed either manuall

Infectious Pseudochromhidrosis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Infectious pseudochromhidrosis is a rare dermatological disorder, characterized by a change in colour of the sweat from normal skin, caused by pigments from microorganisms. Such pigments are a result of evolutionary competition among microorganisms, which appears to be a decisive factor in their survival, patho-genicity, and virulence. Four bacteria are known to be involved in infectious pseudochromhidrosis: Bacillus spp. (blue colour), Corynebacterium spp. (brown/black colour), Serratia marcescens (red/pink colour), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (blue-green colour). Infectious pseudochromhidrosi

The seven features for melanoma: a new dermoscopic algorithm for the diagnosis of malignant melanoma.

The clinical diagnosis of melanoma has a mean sensitivity of 67%, dermoscopy or dermatoscopy is a non invasive technique which improves this sensitivity. Our purpose was to create a simple dermoscopic method for the diagnosis of melanoma useful in daily office practice. For this reason a training set of 218 cutaneous pigmented lesions was used and scored for 16 dermoscopic features: for each feature sensitivity, specificity and statistical significance were evaluated. The results were used to create a simple dermoscopic diagnostic method of only seven dermoscopic features (7FFM). The method wa

Cloning of MITF, the human homolog of the mouse microphthalmia gene and assignment to chromosome 3p14.1-p12.3.

The mouse microphthalmia (mi) gene encodes a basic-helix-loop-helix-zipper protein whose mutations may lead to loss of pigmentation in the eye, inner ear and skin, and to reduced eye size and early onset deafness. Mice with mutations at mi serve as models for human pigment disturbances in skin and eye that may be combined with sensorineural deafness. We have now obtained cDNA and genomic clones of the human homolog of mouse mi, identified a restriction fragment length polymorphism in the gene, and mapped the gene by somatic cell hybrid and fluorescence in situ hybridization techniques to a reg

Environment and the skin.

The skin is an important interface between man and his environment; it is an important portal of entry for hazardous agents and a vulnerable target tissue as well. It is a uniquely accessible model system for detecting hazards and for studying mechanisms of a wide variety of biologic funcitons. Environmental causes of skin reactions comprise a vast array of physical, chemical and biological agents. To appreciate the role of the skin as an interface with man's environment, it is necessary to understand the multiple adaptive mechanisms, and the defenses of the skin against the environmental stre

A Recessive oca2 Mutation Underlies Albinism in Xiphophorus Fish.

Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a group of genetic disorders characterized by impaired melanin production, leading to reduced pigmentation in the skin, hair, and eyes. Xiphophorus, a genus of small freshwater fish, has been a pivotal model organism in pigmentation disorder research, providing key findings in the genetic pathways governing physiological and pathological pigment cell biology. Leveraging the well-established research framework provided by Xiphophorus, we have identified a spontaneously occurring albinism phenotype in swordtail fish Xiphophorus hellerii. Genetic mapping of albino

Pigmented Bowen's disease of the penis and scrotum in a patient with AIDS.

Patients with HIV have higher risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma of the skin given the increased risk of HPV infection, which alters cell proliferation and apoptosis [1]. Pigmented Bowen's disease is an uncommon form of squamous cell carcinoma in-situ characterized by pigmented lesions that can clinically mimic superficial spreading melanoma, pigmented basal cell carcinoma, melanocytic nevus, Bowenoid papulosis, and seborrheic keratosis.

A meta-analysis of pigmentary characteristics, sun sensitivity, freckling and melanocytic nevi and risk of basal cell carcinoma of the skin.

OBJECTIVE: To calculate pooled risk estimates of the association between pigmentary characteristics and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) of the skin. METHODS: We searched three electronic databases and reviewed the reference lists of the retrieved articles until July 2012 to identify eligible epidemiologic studies. Eligible studies were those published in between 1965 and July 2012 that permitted quantitative assessment of the association between histologically-confirmed BCC and any of the following characteristics: hair colour, eye colour, skin colour, skin phototype, tanning and burning ability,

Scleredema adultorum associated with a monoclonal gammopathy and generalized hyperpigmentation.

Scleredema associated with a monoclonal gammopathy and generalized skin pigmentation is described in a 56-year-old man with hyperlipoproteinemia and cardiovascular disease. The patient had IgG-lambda paraproteinemia, without any evidence of multiple myeloma or immunoglobulin deposition in affected skin. Ultrastructural studies of pigmented lesional skin showed increased transfer of melanosomes to basal keratinocytes and dermal melanophages containing complex melanosomes. In addition, cytoplasmic, electron-opaque lipid droplets were seen in approximately every third keratinocyte or melanocyte, …

"Transient pseudo-lentigines sign" in burrowing bug pigmentation.

Cutaneous pigmentation due to the arthropod, Cydnidae (a.k.a. burrowing bug), is increasingly being reported in the literature. The transient nature of this pigmentation probably contributes to its underreporting. We report a case of an 8-year-old girl with a sudden onset of hyperpigmented lesions on her index finger, face, and neck due to burrowing bugs. We propose the term "transient pseudo-lentigines sign" to better describe this fleeting arthropod-induced pigmentation.

Phototherapy in Skin of Color.

Phototherapy in skin of color requires special consideration. Pigmented skin is an efficient ultraviolet filter. Hence, higher doses of ultraviolet radiation are generally more effective and well tolerated in skin of color. An objective and practical system has not yet been established to determine optimal phototherapy dosing in skin of color. The authors recommend obtaining a detailed history of each individual patient's response to sun exposure before prescribing a phototherapy dosing regimen. In addition, providers should consider the role of socioeconomic factors and their impact on photot

[Vitiligo].

This review focuses on the characteristics of vitiligo with an emphasis on diagnosis and treatment options. Vitiligo is a chronic skin disease affecting approximately 0.4% of the world's population. It can lead to stigmatization and a decrease in quality of life. The diagnosis is often straightforward, but there are many other skin conditions which can cause loss of pigmentation. The treatment options have been scarce until 2022 when the first treatment was approved, and today several other treatments are in clinical trials.
