[Parasomnia].

The parasomnias comprises a group of disorders that intrude into the sleep process and are not primarily disorders of sleep and wake states per se. These disorders are manifestations of central nervous system activation usually transmitted through skeletal muscle or autonomic nervous system channels (ICSD 1990). The parasomnias are divided into four groups: Arousal disorders (sleepwalking, night terrors, and confusionnal arousal), sleep-wake transition disorders (rhythmic movement disorder, sleep starts), REM sleep parasomnias (nightmares, sleep paralysis, hallucinations, and REM sleep behavio

Sleep Alterations in a Mouse Model of Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is a neurodegenerative disorder showing progressive neuronal loss in several brain areas and a broad spectrum of motor and non-motor symptoms, including ataxia and altered sleep. While sleep disturbances are known to play pathophysiologic roles in other neurodegenerative disorders, their impact on SCA3 is unknown. Using spectrographic measurements, we sought to quantitatively characterize sleep electroencephalography (EEG) in SCA3 transgenic mice with confirmed disease phenotype. We first measured motor phenotypes in 18-31-week-old homozygous SCA3 YACMJD84.

Sleep states and sleep electroencephalographic spectral power in mice lacking the beta 3 subunit of the GABA(A) receptor.

Mice lacking the GABA(A) receptor beta(3) subunit exhibit a profound disruption in thalamic circuitry. We have studied sleep in these mice under baseline conditions and following treatment with the benzodiazepine midazolam. Under baseline conditions, NREM sleep time did not differ between beta(3) subunit knockout mice and wild type mice, while REM sleep time was significantly lower in knockout mice than in wild type mice during the light portion of a 24-h light-dark cycle. In constant dark conditions, circadian rhythmicity remained intact in mutant mice for a period of at least 9 days. EEG del

Sleep and periodic limb movements in corticobasal degeneration.

Corticobasal degeneration (CBD) exhibits distinct features of akinesia, the 'alien limb' sign and cortical myoclonus. We report a 63-year old woman with a history of CBD for 18 months who was studied twice using all-night polysomnography with an interval of 13 months. Both recordings revealed frequent periodic arm and leg movements predominantly during non-REM sleep. To our knowledge this has not been described in a patient with CBD so far. Similar to a previous report we found REM sleep without atonia (RWA) in all REM episodes. However, the patient showed RWA and some non violent movements th

[A 13-year-old-girl with Pickwickian syndrome and Asperger syndrome].

We reported a 13-year-old girl with Pickwickian syndrome and Asperger syndrome. The chief complaint on admission was apnea attacks during sleep. She had severe obesity. Whole night polysomnography showed that the apnea attacks occurred during light and REM sleep, and that slow wave sleep and REM sleep volumes were decreased. These findings were the same as those on adult cases. Weight control was very difficult because of Asperger syndrome.

Acute Effects of Oral Cannabinoids on Sleep and High-Density EEG in Insomnia: A Pilot Randomised Controlled Trial.

Cannabinoids, particularly Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), have gained popularity as alternative sleep aids; however, their effects on sleep architecture and next-day function remain poorly understood. Here, in a pilot trial, we examined the effects of a single oral dose containing 10 mg THC and 200 mg CBD (THC/CBD) on objective sleep outcomes and next-day alertness using 256-channel high-density EEG in 20 patients with DSM-5 diagnosed insomnia disorder (16 female; mean (SD) age, 46.1 (8.6) years). We showed that THC/CBD decreased total sleep time (-24.5 min, p = 0.05, d =

In utero ethanol exposure decreases rapid eye movement sleep in female Sprague-Dawley rat offspring.

There is substantial evidence to suggest that ethanol exposure during vulnerable periods of prenatal somatic growth results in a number of morphological abnormalities and cognitive deficits in offspring. Amongst the characteristics exhibited by affected individuals are abnormal sleeping patterns, particularly abnormal rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. To better understand how prenatal ethanol exposure specifically affects sleeping patterns in offspring, an animal model of fetal alcohol syndrome was investigated using the Sprague-Dawley rat. Our study demonstrated that the amount of time spent in

The influence of baseline sleep on responses to new stressors: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The way we process and memorize stressors has been repeatedly shown to be affected by following sleep periods, particularly rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, but far fewer studies have examined how baseline sleep prior to stressor exposure might shape our stress response after exposure. In this systematic review, we explored how subjectively and objectively measured baseline sleep, including REM sleep, contributes to future stress responses. METHODS: We identified relevant publications from Web of Science, PubMed, EMBASE, and PsychInfo through August 2024. Human and animal studies w

The interaction between comorbidities and sleep stages influences oxygen re-saturation characteristics.

Sleep stages exhibit differing patterns of cardiac, respiratory and nervous system activation. Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is associated with deeper oxygen desaturation events in obstructive sleep apnea. However, no studies have looked to the effect of sleep staging on re-saturation characteristics. Polysomnographic data from the Sleep Heart Health Study were utilised to derive oxygen saturation parameters from events having both desaturation and re-saturation parts. Sleep stages were described as non-REM (NREM) 1 or 2 (combined), 3 and REM. Sleep stage effects on desaturation and re-satura

Muscle atonia is triggered by cholinergic stimulation of the basal forebrain: implication for the pathophysiology of canine narcolepsy.

Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep-related symptoms, such as cataplexy. The exact pathophysiology underlying the disease is unknown but may involve central cholinergic systems. It is known that the brainstem cholinergic system is activated during REM sleep. Furthermore, REM sleep and REM sleep atonia similar to cataplexy can be triggered in normal and narcoleptic dogs by stimulating cholinergic receptors within the pontine brainstem. The pontine cholinergic system is, therefore, likely to play a role in triggering cat

Sleep Stage Classification During CPAP Therapy from CPAP-Airflow and Wearable Fingertip Signals.

BACKGROUND: Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy is the standard treatment for obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS), and photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors are commonly used in wearable devices for home sleep apnea testing. The recorded airflow and PPG signals from both sensors capture rich physiological patterns. We hypothesize that by combining information from these signals, we can efficiently estimate sleep dynamics of patients receiving CPAP treatment. METHODS: The airflow signals were obtained from CPAP titration devices, denoted as CPAP-airflow, while the PPG

[A study of the relationship between nocturnal intragastric pH and sleep stages of peptic ulcer].

We studied the correlation of the gastric acid secretion and the depth of sleep at night with no medication in 32 cases (19 gastric ulcer, 6 duodenal ulcer patients and 7 healthy controls). Using Memory PH: Monitor intragastric pH values were consecutively measured without antiulcer drugs. The depth of sleep were monitored continuously by recording without any sleeping drugs. In healthy controls, the pH values of awake phase was significantly lower than that of sleep stage 1, 4 and rapid eye movement (REM) phases. The pH values of REM phases were significantly high rather than that of sleep st

Brain glucose metabolism during non-rapid eye movement sleep in major depression. A positron emission tomography study.

BACKGROUND: Depression is characterized by several sleep-related abnormalities shortly before and after sleep onset, such as prolonged sleep latency, loss of stage 3-4 sleep, reduced rapid eye movement (REM) latency, increased nocturnal core body temperature, and abnormal hormone secretion patterns. Sleep deprivation is associated with a temporary improvement in depression. We hypothesized that depressed patients may be "overaroused" and that absolute cerebral glucose metabolism would be elevated during the first nocturnal non-REM sleep period in depressed patients compared with normal control

Differential activation within costal diaphragm during rapid-eye-movement sleep in cats.

Simultaneous recordings of the diaphragmatic electromyogram (EMG) were made from two separate regions of the costal diaphragm in six normal cats. The diaphragmatic activities were always synchronous and the amplitudes and rates of rise were similar during slow-wave sleep. In contrast, during natural rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep, different activity was often present in the two leads. These differences were in the time of onset and offset, as well as in the amplitude and spike patterns, and occurred in approximately 5-20% of the diaphragmatic bursts averaged over the entire REM sleep period. A comparison of sleep patterns in natural and mandrax- and tuinal-induced sleep.

A within-subject comparison of the effects on the overnight sleep EEG of 1 tablet of Mandrax (containing methaqualone base 250 mg. and diphenhydramine hydrochloride 25 mg.) and 200 mg. Tuinal (equal parts of quinalbarbitone sodium and amylobarbitone sodium) in 14 normal subjects is reported.Mandrax-induced sleep was not significantly different from natural sleep in the duration of light, moderate, deep and REM phases. Tuinal produced a significant reduction in REM sleep (P < 0.01) compared with natural sleep and with Mandrax-induced sleep.

Cardiovascular changes associated with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

Five men free of lung or cardiovascular diseases and with severe obstructive sleep apnea participated in a study on the impact of sleep states on cardiovascular variables during sleep apneas. A total of 128 obstructive apneas [72 from stage 2 non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep and 56 from rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep] were analyzed. Each apnea was comprised of an obstructive period (OP) followed by a hyperventilation period, which was normally associated with an arousal. Heart rate (HR), stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO) (determined with an electrical impedance system), radial artery

Effects of citicoline administration on synaptic proteins in rapid eye movement sleep-deprived rats.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep has a pivotal role in learning-memory and sleep deprivation (SD) negatively affects synaptic functioning. Cytidine-5-diphosphocholine (Citicoline) has been known to improve learning and memory functions. Our objective was to explore the effects of Citicoline on hippocampal and cortical synaptic proteins in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep-deprived rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rats (n=36) were randomly divided into 6 groups. Environmental control or sleep deprivation was done by placing the rat on a 13 cm diameter platform (Large Platform [LP] group) or on a 6.5 cm diameter pla

Parasomnias: epidemiology and management.

The category of common sleep disorders known as parasomnias includes disorders of arousal, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behaviour disorder (RBD), nocturnal seizures, rhythmic movement disorder, and tooth grinding or 'bruxism'. Parasomnias are all characterised as undesirable physical or behavioural phenomena occurring during the sleep period. Although these conditions can be distressing and, in some cases, hazardous to the sleeper and his or her bed partner, it is important to recognise that parasomnias are diagnosable and treatable in the vast majority of patients. Evaluation begins with a
