Sleep's influence on susceptibility to motion sickness in parabolic flights and virtual reality: An exploratory study.

ObjectivesThe relationship between sleep and motion sickness (MS) remains underexplored. This study examined whether objective sleep parameters were related to susceptibility to motion sickness, elicited by different sensory conflicts.MethodsIn a cross-over design, twenty-six participants completed a virtual reality (VR) paradigm inducing cybersickness-provoking stimuli, while twenty of them underwent a parabolic flight (PF) simulating space sickness. Actigraphy was recorded during a period of 6 nights for each paradigm to measure objective sleep quality, while subjective sleep ratings, motion

Clinical relevance of circadian clocks within the orofacial scope of sleep medicine: Implications for diagnosis, therapeutic and prophylactic measures.

Circadian clocks regulate sleep-wake patterns, metabolism, autonomic tone, and painperception. Their disruption contributes to multiple pathologies, including sleepdisorders and cardiovascular dysfunction. Within the orofacial domain, circadianrhythms influence the timing, intensity, and interaction of conditions such as insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, sleep bruxism, orofacial pain and temporomandibulardisorders. This review outlines how circadian mechanisms and the orexinergic system provide anintegrative framework for understanding these orofacial sleep disorders and theirsystemic consequen

[Sleep disorders in psychiatric diseases. Epidemiological aspects].

Very few epidemiological surveys have specifically studied relationships between sleep disturbances and psychiatric diseases. In this review, we preferred to use the classification proposed in 1979 by the Association of Sleep Disorders Centers. It includes four main categories: insomnias, excessive sleepiness, troubles of the wake/sleep schedule and parasomnias. Evaluating psychiatric disorders among general populations is easier owing to DSM III and DSM III-R criteria, but there are not equivalent criteria in evaluating sleep disorders. It is almost impossible to realize polysomnographic reco

CAPSCNet: A novel scattering network for automated identification of phasic cyclic alternating patterns of human sleep using multivariate EEG signals.

The Cyclic Alternating Pattern (CAP) can be considered a physiological marker of sleep instability. The CAP can examine various sleep-related disorders. Certain short events (A and B phases) manifest related to a specific physiological process or pathology during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. These phases unexpectedly modify EEG oscillations; hence, manual detection is challenging. Therefore, it is highly desirable to have an automated system for detecting the A-phases (AP). Deep convolution neural networks (CNN) have shown high performance in various healthcare applications. A variant

Country differences in nocturnal sleep variability: Observations from a large-scale, long-term sleep wearable study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Country or regional differences in sleep duration are well-known, but few large-scale studies have specifically evaluated sleep variability, either across the work week, or in terms of differences in weekday and weekend sleep. METHODS: Sleep measures, obtained over 50 million night's sleep from ∼220,000 wearable device users in 35 countries, were analysed. Each person contributed an average of ∼242 nights of data. Multiple regression was used to assess the impact country of residence had on sleep duration, timing, efficiency, weekday sleep variability, weekend sleep extensio

The face of Dental Sleep Medicine in the 21st century.

It becomes increasingly clear that some sleep disorders have important diagnostic and/or management links to the dental domain, hence the emergence of the discipline 'Dental Sleep Medicine'. In this review, the following topics are discussed: 1. the reciprocal associations between oro-facial pain and sleep; 2. the associations between sleep bruxism and other sleep-related disorders; 3. the role of the dentist in the assessment and management of sleep bruxism; and 4. the dental management of obstructive sleep apnoea. From these topics' descriptions, it becomes clear that the role of the dentist

Arousal in patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux and sleep apnoea.

Nocturnal gastro-oesophageal reflux has been observed in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Negative intrathoracic pressure during apnoeas and arousal have been suggested as the underlying mechanisms. In order to evaluate this hypothesis, the coincidence and sequence in time of arousal, apnoea and reflux events were analysed. Fifteen patients with OSA or heavy snoring were studied by means of standard polysomnograpy with parallel recording of 24-h oesophageal pH. Reflux events during the day were present in all patients, five of whom had symptoms of reflux. In three of these and in

Sleep impairment in patients with social phobia.

Patient reports of sleep difficulty and sleep quality were systematically assessed in 30 nondepressed, untreated patients with the generalized subtype of social phobia and 30 sex-matched and age-comparable healthy control subjects. Sleep characteristics of the preceding month were assessed using a standardized, validated instrument: the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Patients with generalized social phobia reported significantly poorer sleep quality, longer sleep latency, more frequent sleep disturbance, and more severe daytime dysfunction. Global PSQI scores did not differ significant

Nocturnal Wakefulness Is Associated With Next-Day Suicidal Ideation in Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Self-reported sleep disturbances may confer elevated risk for suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and death. However, limited research has evaluated polysomnographically determined sleep disturbance as an acute physiologic risk factor for suicidal thoughts. This study sought to investigate the relationship between nocturnal wakefulness in association with next-day suicidal ideation using overnight polysomnography assessment from data collected between 2006 and 2013. METHODS: Sixty-five participants with DSM-IV-diagnosed major depressive disorder or bipolar depression underwent ove

Sleep and cardiovascular phenotype in middle-aged hypocretin-deficient narcoleptic mice.

Narcolepsy with cataplexy (NC) is a lifelong disorder caused by loss of hypothalamic hypocretin/orexin (HCRT) neurones, often starting in childhood. NC patients show altered control of heart rate (HR) and a normotensive non-dipper blood pressure (BP) profile, but the natural history and prognostic significance of these alterations remain unclear. Similar alterations have been observed in HCRT-ataxin-3 transgenic (TG) NC mice lacking HCRT neurones, but studies have been limited to young adult individuals <4 months of age. Here we evaluated long-term effects of NC on derangements in the wake-sle

Insomnia in somatoform pain disorder: sleep laboratory studies on differences to controls and acute effects of trazodone, evaluated by the Somnolyzer 24 x 7 and the Siesta database.

Patients with chronic pain often suffer from sleep disturbances, specifically decreased deep sleep, and thus may get into a vicious circle which maintains their pain condition. Utilizing polysomnography and psychometry, objective and subjective sleep and awakening quality was investigated in 11 patients with nonorganic insomnia (F51.0) related to somatoform pain disorder (SPD; F45.4) as compared with age- and sex-matched healthy controls of the Siesta normative database. Patients demonstrated a markedly deteriorated Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, a decreased Quality of Life Index, slightly in

Sleep disorders in Parkinson's disease: many causes, few therapeutic options.

Sleep symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD) are frequent and have multifactorial and multilayered causes. Primary involvement of sleep/wake regulating centers in the brainstem, sleep problems caused by the nocturnal manifestation of motor and dysautonomic signs and medication-induced sleep problems are often impossible to disentangle in the individual patient. Two syndromes, hypersomnia and REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), are increasingly recognized as harbingers of the core PD motor syndrome. RBD, associated with a panoply of other nonmotor symptoms, may predispose to a specific PD phenotyp

Evaluation of candidate measures for home-based screening of sleep disordered breathing in Taiwanese bus drivers.

BACKGROUND: Sleepiness-at-the-wheel has been identified as a major cause of highway accidents. The aim of our study is identifying the candidate measures for home-based screening of sleep disordered breathing in Taiwanese bus drivers, instead of polysomnography. METHODS: Overnight polysomnography accompanied with simultaneous measurements of alternative screening devices (pulse oximetry, ApneaLink, and Actigraphy), heart rate variability, wake-up systolic blood pressure and questionnaires were completed by 151 eligible participants who were long-haul bus drivers with a duty period of more tha

Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Sleep Disorders: Emerging Evidence and Future Directions.

Sleep disorders are increasingly prevalent clinical conditions that significantly impair physical and mental health. Given the observed limitations of pharmacological therapies, there has been increasing research interest in effective non-pharmacological interventions. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), including invasive VNS and non-invasive methods such as transcutaneous auricular VNS (taVNS), has emerged as a promising neuromodulatory strategy. This review summarizes current evidence on VNS for insomnia, central hypersomnia, restless legs syndrome, and sleep-related breathing disorders, highlig

The role of polysomnography in Parkinson's disease: objective sleep assessment and clinical indications.

Sleep disorders (SDs) are highly prevalent in Parkinson's disease (PD), affecting up to 80% of patients during the disease and significantly contributing to impaired quality of life, cognitive decline, motor worsening, fall risk, and increased caregiver burden. Polysomnography (PSG) remains the gold standard for objective sleep assessment in PD and plays a central role in differential diagnosis and therapeutic planning. This review examines the spectrum of SDs identifiable by PSG, including rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD), obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), periodic limb mov

World Sleep Society recommendations for the use of wearable consumer health trackers that monitor sleep.

Wearable consumer health trackers (CHTs) are increasingly used for sleep monitoring, yet their utility remains debated within the sleep community. To navigate these perspectives, we propose pragmatic, actionable recommendations for users, clinicians, researchers, and manufacturers to support CHT usage and development. We provide an overview of the evolution of multi-sensor CHTs, detailing common sensors and sleep-relevant metrics. We advocate for standardized 'fundamental sleep measures' across manufacturers, distinguishing these from proprietary exploratory metrics with future potential. We o
