Nasal Septal Angioleiomyoma and Septal Sinus Surgery: A Review of 2 Cases.

Angioleiomyomas are smooth muscle masses originating from blood vessel tunica media. This is a rare tumor, comprising less than 1% of benign sinonasal cavity tumors. Failure to recognize and surgically excise nasal angioleiomyomas can result in lesion recurrence. We present 2 new cases of nasal septum angioleiomyoma at a single institution. Additionally, both cases underwent septal and nasal surgery. Due to the nonspecific clinical and imaging findings, a high index of suspicion is needed to diagnose nasal septum angioleiomyoma, often requiring histopathological verification. Preferred treatme

Primary Pleomorphic Lipoma of the Parotid Gland with Prominent Myxoid Change: Report of a Rare Case Mimicking Carcinoma Ex Pleomorphic Adenoma on Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology.

We present a case of a primary 2.5 cm pleomorphic lipoma of the right parotid gland with prominent myxoid change which on FNA displayed features that mimicked a carcinoma or sarcoma ex pleomorphic adenoma. The patient was a 79 year old man with no oncological history or tumor elsewhere. On immunohistochemistry the neoplastic cells strongly expressed CD34. There was no expression of retinoblastoma protein, smooth muscle actin, S100-protein or cytokeratins (AE1/3 and CAM5.2). The Ki-67 proliferation index was low (< 2%). Fluorescence in situ hybridization was negative for MDM2 gene amplification

Adenoid cystic carcinoma associated with salivary duct cyst in the sublingual gland.

We described an extremely rare case of adenoid cystic carcinoma associated with salivary duct cyst in the sublingual gland of a 40-year-old Japanese woman. The tumor was growing from the cyst wall and almost occluded the cyst lumen. The epithelium lining the cyst lumen contained both keratin 19-positive cells and alpha-smooth muscle actin-positive cells, indicating the cyst being derived from the acinus/intercalated duct of the sublingual gland. Therefore, our case has presented for the first time a direct evidence that adenoid cystic carcinoma arises from acinus/intercalated duct.

Leiomyosarcoma of the maxillary sinuses: report of two cases.

Leiomyosarcoma is a malignant smooth-muscle tumor that has a predilection for the gastrointestinal tract and the female genital tract. It is locally fast-spreading and highly aggressive, and the prognosis is poor. We report two cases of leiomyosarcoma of the maxilla in patients who sought treatment for maxillary swelling, nasal obstruction, and epistaxis; one patient also had orbital involvement and cervical lymph node metastasis. Both patients underwent radical surgery followed by chemo- and/or radiotherapy. The patient with orbital involvement died shortly thereafter, but the other was disea

Leiomyoma of the nasal septum.

Leiomyoma is a benign myogenic tumor that may develop wherever smooth muscle is present. It occurs commonly in the uterus, skin, and gastrointestinal tract and is rare within the nasal cavity. Only three of twenty-four reported cases of sinonasal leiomyoma have been found to originate from the nasal septum. Treatment of choice for these neoplasms is surgical excision. We present two cases of nasal septal leiomyoma. Unique features discussed include recurrence of one neoplasm and the technique used to endoscopically repair a cerebrospinal fluid leak resulting from resection of the neoplasm.

[A case of bronchogenic cyst in the esophageal wall].

A 73-year-old man with a right aortic arch was admitted because of stridor and dyspnea. We diagnosed a cervico-mediastinal cyst associated with bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy. Median sternotomy revealed a cystic tumor located in the esophageal wall. Microscopic examination of the resected cyst showed cartilage, smooth muscle and mucous gland, so the final diagnosis was bronchogenic cyst. The bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy was caused by chronic pressure from the cyst. Mediastinal cysts should be found and treated as early as possible, because these cysts may sometimes caus

[Vasitis nodosa suspected of the spermatic cord tumor: a case report].

We report a rare case of vasitis nodosa. A 54-year-old man was found to have a right spermatic cord mass during the herniorrhaphy operation. There was no history of surgical or traumatic causes. An indurated mass in the right spermatic cord was suspected to be spermatic cord tumor, and a right high orchiectomy was performed. Histological examination revealed disruption of the ductal lumen, granulomas with the sperm-like necrotic tissue and proliferation of the lymphocytes and plasma cells in the smooth muscle bundles. Pathological diagnosis was vasitis nodosa.

Multiple glomangiomas involving the glans penis in pediatric patient.

UNLABELLED: Glomus tumors, especially multiple ones, are uncommon skin and soft tissue neoplasms occasionally seen in various internal organs. Involvement of the external genital organs including penis is extremely rare, and until now, scarce cases have been reported in the available literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A routine histologic and immunohistochemical staining for pan-muscle actin, α-smooth muscle actin, desmin, CD31, and CD34 was applied for diagnosis of the lesions. RESULTS: Three soft, bluish, and tender tumors localized on the ventral aspect of the glans penis in a 9-year-old

Extragastrointestinal Stromal Tumor in the Peritoneum: A Case Report.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are tumors of mesenchymal origin, accounting for less than 1% of the primary neoplasms of the digestive tract, which can affect any segment of the gastrointestinal tract. However, they can also occur in other locations outside the gastrointestinal tract. In such situations, these are known as extragastrointestinal stromal tumors (eGIST). We present a 58-year-old male, who attended the emergency department due to asthenia, anorexia, heartburn, abdominal pain, and distension, who was ultimately diagnosed with an eGIST in the peritoneum. The immunohistochemi

A case of benign schwannoma of the ascending colon treated with laparoscopic-assisted wedge resection.

Isolated colonic schwannomas are rare gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumors. Only a small number of cases have been reported. Occurrence of these tumors is more common in the stomach than in the large intestine. These spindle cell lesions are distinct from leiomyoma, leiomyosarcoma, and gastrointestinal stromal tumors because the tumor cells have a distinct immunophenotype, with strong diffuse positivity for S-100 and vimentin, as well as corroborative negative staining of CD117 and smooth muscle markers. We present a case of colonic schwannoma in a 70-year-old woman who had no specific symptoms

Anti-tumor activity of phenoxybenzamine and its inhibition of histone deacetylases.

The principal finding from this study was the recognition that the α-adrenergic antagonist, phenoxybenzamine, possesses histone deacetylase inhibitory activity. Phenoxybenzamine is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of hypertensive crises associated with tumors of the adrenal medulla, pheochromocytomas. It has several "off label" indications relative to its capacity to relax vascular smooth muscle and smooth muscle of the urogenital tract. The drug also has a long history of apparent efficacy in ameliorating, and perhaps reversing, the severe symptoms

An Update on Clinicopathological, Imaging, and Genetic Features of Angioleiomyoma.

Angioleiomyoma is a benign, pericytic (perivascular) neoplasm that primarily occurs in the subcutis or dermis of the extremities. The lesion typically presents as a small, firm, slow-growing, painful nodule. Magnetic resonance imaging reveals the lesion to be a well-defined, round to oval mass with signal intensity similar to or slightly hyperintense to that of skeletal muscle on T1-weightwed sequences. A dark reticular sign on T2-weighted sequences appears to be a characteristic feature of angioleiomyoma. Prominent enhancement is usually seen after intravenous contrast. Histologically, the le

Disseminated malignant fibrous histiocytoma (giant cell rich): a case report.

Giant cell rich malignant fibrous histiocytoma accounts for 3 -15% of all malignant fibrous histiocytomas. Currently, the nomenclature giant cell malignant fibrous histiocytoma is reserved for undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcomas with prominent osteoclastic giant cells. It is considered to be synonymous with malignant giant cell tumor of soft parts. We report a case of disseminated giant cell malignant fibrous histiocytoma involving the scalp, cervical node, lungs, spine, abdominal wall, base of penis, gluteal cleft, paraspinal region and back. The diagnosis was established after staining for

Ductal carcinoma in situ-like structures in metastatic breast carcinoma.

In this report, we present two cases of axillary lymph node metastatic breast carcinoma with features mimicking ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS): one was of the comedo-like type and the other was suggestive of the micropapillary type. In the first case, the primary tumor presented DCIS of the comedo type; however, in the second case, the primary tumor consisted only of the invasive ductal component. Immunohistochemistry against smooth muscle actin, S100-protein, CK5/6, CD10, P63, and 34betaE12 did not identify myoepithelial cells either in DICS of the first primary tumor or in both metastases.

[A case of malignant myoepithelioma in the lacrimal gland].

BACKGROUND: A case of malignant myoepithelioma in the lacrimal gland is reported. CASE: The patient, a 77-year-old male with increasing proptosis in the left eye was referred to us. Steroid therapy was not effective, therefore lateral orbitotomy was performed. RESULT: On pathological examination, the proper structure of actini was normal, but the cord of actini revealed the destruction layer tapering into the surrounding area. The tumor was composed of sarcomatoid changes with spindle-shaped cells, collagen fibers, and myxoid pattern. immunohistochemically, tumor cells were positive for epit

Endobronchial epithelioid leiomyoma (leiomyoblastoma) causing complete right-lung atelectasis: A case report.

RATIONALE: Endobronchial epithelioid leiomyoma, historically termed leiomyoblastoma, is an exceptionally rare smooth-muscle tumor that can cause critical airway obstruction and mimic malignant endobronchial disease. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 45-year-old never-smoking woman presented with several months of progressive exertional dyspnea and a persistent dry cough. Examination revealed absent breath sounds over the right hemithorax and rightward tracheal deviation. DIAGNOSES: Chest radiography and computed tomography demonstrated complete right-lung atelectasis with ipsilateral mediastinal shift. Br

Guinea pig line 10 hepatocarcinoma model: characterization of monoclonal antibody and in vivo effect of unconjugated antibody and antibody conjugated to diphtheria toxin A chain.

Monoclonal antibodies were raised against the guinea pig line 10 (L10) hepatocarcinoma, and an IgG1-producing hybridoma (D3) was selected for further study. D3 is a true monoclonal antibody as demonstrated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. Radioimmunoassays on live cells revealed no cross-reactivity with normal tissues or with the line 1 hepatocarcinoma which was used as a control. Membrane immunofluorescence assays demonstrated similar specificity. Immunoperoxidase staining of cryostat sections of tumor and normal tissues of both adult animals and fetuses showed that the D3 monoclonal a

The Eker rat: establishing a genetic paradigm linking renal cell carcinoma and uterine leiomyoma.

Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) and uterine leiomyoma (often referred to as fibroids) are tumors arising from tubular epithelium and myometrial compartments of the kidney and uterus, respectively. These tumors have a very different clinical presentation, with RCC being one of the less common cancers, having a very poor prognosis, and occurring predominantly in men, whereas uterine leiomyoma are the most common tumor of women and are benign. Although they are distinct histologically, with RCC arising from epithelial cells and leiomyoma arising from smooth muscle cells, they share a common embryologi
