Retracing our steps: A review on autism research in children, its limitation and impending pharmacological interventions.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by three core impairments: impaired communication, impaired reciprocal social interaction, and restricted, repetitive, and stereotypical behavior patterns. Spectrum refers to the heterogeneity of presentation, severity of symptoms, and medical comorbidities associated with ASD. Among the most common underlying medical conditions are attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, depression, epilepsy, digestive disorders, metabolic disorders, and immune disorders. At present, in the absence of an objective

What happens to children who move off the autism spectrum? Clinical follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: There is controversial information on outcome of school age individuals who lose the diagnosis of autism and achieve "optimal outcome" (OO). The present study assessed the autism symptoms and other psychiatric disorders in a group of children with a past history of autism. METHODS: The subjects consisted of 26 individuals who had lost the diagnosis of autism 2-8 years previously. Clinical assessment was done with both parents and children. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th edn; DSM-V) criteria were used for diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In a

Personality disorders and autism spectrum disorders: what are the connections?

BACKGROUND: The relationship between autism spectrum disorders/pervasive developmental disorders and personality disorders is not completely clear, although both concepts imply lifelong impairment. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the presence of possible personality disorders in a group of young adults with Asperger syndrome. METHOD: Fifty-four young adults with a clinical diagnosis of Asperger syndrome were assessed with Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II disorders to evaluate the presence of a concomitant personality disorder and completed the Autism Spectr

The Experiences of Mothers Feeding Their Infants Later Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Bottle Feeding and Complementary Feeding Challenges.

INTRODUCTION: Children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) more commonly experience feeding difficulty than their neurotypical (NT) peers, although less is known about how the feeding behaviors present during infancy. METHODS: Twenty-four mothers participated in interviews exploring their experiences feeding their autistic and NT children during the first year of life and the context behind feeding practices that may also contribute to feeding difficulty in autistic children during infancy. RESULTS: Thematic analysis identified four main themes: (1) bottle feeding and cup behaviors

Behavioral gender differences in school-age children with autism.

This study examined differences in internalizing and externalizing behaviors between school-aged boys and girls diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Eighty-nine children between the ages of 8 and 16 years participated in this study: 17 girls (M = 11.5 years, SD = 2.3) and 72 boys (M = 11.3 years, SD = 2.2). Participants were matched on the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition and Full-Scale IQ (FSIQ > 64). The results indicated that, girls had higher reported instances of Bullying, less Anger Control, and poorer Emotional Self-Control than boys on the Behavior Asses

Potassium channels and autism spectrum disorder: An overview.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) comprises a group of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviors, interests, or activities. It had been demonstrated that potassium channels played a key role in regulating neuronal excitability, which was closely associated with neurological diseases including epilepsy, ataxia, myoclonus, and psychiatric disorders. In recent years, a growing body of evidence from whole-genome sequencing and whole-exome sequencing had identified several ASD susceptibility genes of po

[Genetic risk factors and their influence on neural development in autism spectrum disorders].

Genetic risk factors and their influence on neural development in autism spectrum disorders Abstract. Abstract. Autism spectrum disorders are etiologically based on genetic and specific gene x biologically relevant environmental risk factors. They are diagnosed based on behavioral characteristics, such as impaired social communication and stereotyped, repetitive behavior and sensory as well as special interests. The genetic background is heterogeneous, i. e., it comprises diverse genetic risk factors across the disorder and high interindividual differences of specific genetic risk factors. N

Enhancing the Reading Development of Learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Foundational to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are difficulties developing joint attention, social reciprocity, and language/communication. These challenges place children with ASD at risk for future reading failure. Research suggests that many school-aged children with ASD will learn the decoding skills necessary to effectively read text, but will struggle with comprehension. Yet, the reading profiles of learners with ASD also show great heterogeneity, with some also unable to effectively decode new words. The range of challenges associated with ASD highlights the need for comprehensive liter

[Neuropediatric approach to autism].

Autism is defined by 3 main criteria: disturbance of reciprocal social interaction, disturbance of communication (including language comprehension and spoken language) and disturbance of normal variation in behaviour and imaginative activities; an onset before age 36 months is also required. The neuropediatric contribution to autism is dominated by the search for an underlying organic etiology, especially if there are arguments for an associated encephalopathy: ante- or perinatal medical history, dysmorphic signs, skin spots, neurological abnormalities, somatic abnormalities compatible with a

Autism: the paediatric neurologist's tale.

Neurologists use the term 'autistic' to describe a quality of social behaviour and communication rather than 'autism' as a diagnosis. It has an organic basis and is commonly, and increasingly, found to be associated with specific medical diagnoses. Epilepsy is as common as in severely mentally handicapped children but whereas in the latter it is often evident in the early years it commonly emerges in adolescence in autistic children. There is a genetic component to autism and in the absence of a specific diagnosis an empirical recurrence risk of 1-2% is given. Fragile-X chromosome disorder is

Measurement invariance of the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale-Self-Report.

OBJECTIVE: The Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale-Self Report (LSAS-SR) is a self-report measure of social anxiety (SA), which has shown adequate psychometric properties across cultures. However, no study has systematically evaluated its measurement invariance (MI) between (a) individuals with and without a diagnosis of social anxiety disorder (SAD) and (b) males and females. The current study addresses this issue. METHODS: We collected data on 257 (158 females) Italian individuals diagnosed with SAD and 356 (232 females) community-dwelling adults. RESULTS: We initially found support for the uni

Day-to-day spontaneous social behaviours is quantitatively and qualitatively affected in a 16p11.2 deletion mouse model.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorders affect more than 1% of the population, impairing social communication and increasing stereotyped behaviours. A micro-deletion of the 16p11.2 BP4-BP5 chromosomic region has been identified in 1% of patients also displaying intellectual disabilities. In mouse models generated to understand the mechanisms of this deletion, learning and memory deficits were pervasive in most genetic backgrounds, while social communication deficits were only detected in some models. METHODS: To complement previous studies, we itemized the social deficits in the mouse model of

Increasingly certain about uncertainty: Intolerance of uncertainty across anxiety and depression.

Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) - a dispositional characteristic resulting from negative beliefs about uncertainty and its implications - may be an important construct in anxiety disorders and depression. Despite the potential importance of IU, clinical data on the construct remains relatively scant and focused on generalized anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The present study systematically investigated IU, as measured by the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale-12 (IUS-12), across groups diagnosed with anxiety disorders (i.e., social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, generalize

Aspirin's Role in Reducing Oxidative Stress: Implications for Cognition and Heart Function in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairments in social communication and the presence of additional conditions such as heart disease. Oxidative stress has been linked to the severity of autism, suggesting a potential role for antioxidants in mitigating its effects. Aspirin, an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory drug, has shown protective effects on heart function. This study aimed to investigate the effects of aspirin on cognition, social behavior, and left ventricular hypertrophy in adult male rats following induction of an autism model with valproic acid (VPA). "It's not about wanting to be thin or look small, it's about the way it feels": an IPA analysis of social and sensory differences in autistic and non-autistic individuals with anorexia and their parents.

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing evidence to support an overlap between autism and anorexia nervosa (AN), underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Social and sensory factors have emerged as promising targets in both autism and AN, however there remains scope to compare these differences across autistic and non-autistic experiences of AN. Drawing on dyadic multi-perspectives, this study explored experiences of social and sensory differences in autistic and non-autistic adults and their parents and/or carers. METHODS: Using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), dyadic interviews

Community-level education percentile rank estimation in China using multi-source big data and machine learning.

Socio-economic data with fine-grained spatial resolution forms the basis of socio-spatial analysis and policymaking. In response to the limited availability of such data in China, this study provides an open-access, community-level dataset on education percentile rank - a more accurate indicator of social status than years of education. Our dataset comprises 122,126 communities, covering 97.9% of prefecture-level administrative units and 81.8% of county-level administrative units. The data is estimated using an XGBoost machine learning model based on the relationship between mean education per

Cannabis use disorder, alcohol use disorder, and suicidal ideation within a social determinants of mental health framework: Insights from a network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol and cannabis use disorders are among the most prevalent substance use disorders worldwide. They frequently co-occur and show high comorbidity with psychological distress and suicidal ideation. Although these relationships are well established, their underlying structure remains unclear, as mental health is embedded within a complex network of individual, social and environmental factors. The aim of this study was to explore the interplay between alcohol and cannabis use disorders, psychological distress and suicidal ideation within the context of sociodemographic factors an

Early risk factors and developmental pathways to chronic high inhibition and social anxiety disorder in adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence suggests that chronic high levels of behavioral inhibition are a precursor of social anxiety disorder. The authors sought to identify early risk factors for, and developmental pathways to, chronic high inhibition among school-age children and the association of chronic high inhibition with social anxiety disorder by adolescence. METHOD: A community sample of 238 children was followed from birth to grade 9. Mothers, teachers, and children reported on the children's behavioral inhibition from grades 1 to 9. Lifetime history of psychiatric disorders was available for the subs

[DARJELY, a multidisciplinary support system for young isolated migrants in Lyon].

Young, isolated migrants (YIMs) represent some particularly vulnerable populations that have arrived unaccompanied on the national territory and are particularly exposed to mafia networks, delinquency, and prostitution. YIMs thus cumulate social (e.g., precarity, or isolation), psychiatric (e.g., post-traumatic stress disorder, mood, or anxiety disorders), and addiction (e.g., prescription drug dependence) disorders. This addition of vulnerabilities makes the social and medical support difficult to operationalize as it requires multidisciplinary and coordinated programs. In Lyon, the 2nd-large

Disability advocacy messaging and conceptual links to underlying disability identity development among college students with learning disabilities and attention disorders.

BACKGROUND: Learning disabilities and attention disorders (LD/AD) are highly prevalent neurodevelopmental conditions that influence developmental trajectories and whose impacts exist throughout the life course. Self-advocacy skills are critical for college students with LD/AD, which are underpinned by understanding of self and one's disability. OBJECTIVE: This study examined disability advocacy messaging included in projects created by college students with LD/AD, compared patterns in disability messaging to existing disability identity models, and explored changes in disability messaging dur
