Sources and processes of social influence on health-related choices: A systematic review based on a social-interdependent choice paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Most choices in healthcare are not made in social isolation. However, current econometric models treat patients' preferences as the sole determinants of their choices. Through the lens of sociology and medical sociology theories, this paper presents a systematic literature review of identifiable social influences on patients' choices, serving as a first step in developing a social-interdependent choice paradigm. METHODS: Following the PRISMA guideline and using nine databases, we identified the individual agents or groups involved in health-related choices, the functional content

Early Social Behavior in Young Children with Sex Chromosome Trisomies (XXX, XXY, XYY): Profiles of Observed Social Interactions and Social Impairments Associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Individuals with Sex Chromosome Trisomies (SCT; XXX, XXY, XYY) have an increased vulnerability for developing challenges in social adaptive functioning. The present study investigates social interaction behavior in the context of varying social load, and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) symptomatology in young children aged 1-7.5 years old, with SCT (N = 105) and control children (N = 101). Children with SCT show less interaction behaviors and more social withdrawal, as compared to their control peers, which were most evident in the high social load condition. Second, social impairments related

Social anxiety in late adolescence: the importance of early childhood language impairment.

Social phobia is a common, highly comorbid, poorly understood and relatively understudied condition. The origins of social phobia share familial and biological features common with those of other anxiety disorders, but seldom have precursors of the fear of social communication been examined as a possible pathway to social phobia. Here we examine the role of early childhood language impairment as an antecedent to social phobia in late adolescence. Participants in a prospective longitudinal community study identified as having language impairment at age 5 and matched controls were followed up at

Altered neural processing of social reward in male heroin abstainers.

Individuals who are addicted to drugs often face unfavourable social conditions and difficulty with social adaptation. Both may be closely related to impaired social cognitive ability. This study posits that social cognitive impairments likely arise from blunted social reward processing in drug users. This study aimed to explore the electrophysiological mechanism of social reward processing in people who abstain from using heroin (heroin abstainers). Twenty-eight male heroin abstainers and 27 matched controls completed the social incentive delay task. At the same time, their corresponding beha…

Social skills in children with RASopathies: a comparison of Noonan syndrome and neurofibromatosis type 1.

BACKGROUND: Gene mutations within the RAS-MAPK signaling cascade result in Noonan syndrome (NS), neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), and related disorders. Recent research has documented an increased risk for social difficulties and features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among children with these conditions. Despite this emerging evidence, the neuropsychological characteristics associated with social skills deficits are not well understood, particularly for children with NS. METHODS: Parents of children with NS (n = 39), NF1 (n = 39), and unaffected siblings (n = 32) between the ages of 8 and

VR-SOAP, a modular virtual reality treatment for improving social activities and participation of young people with psychosis: a study protocol for a single-blind multi-centre randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Young people with a psychotic disorder have the same social goals as their healthy peers, but their social networks are smaller, they participate less often in leisure activities and are less successful in work and education. Causes of these problems are multifaceted, but culminate in difficulties with interacting in daily life social situations. Current treatments have only moderate effects on social functioning and often target one specific domain. Virtual reality (VR) has the potential to improve the treatment of social interaction difficulties. We developed a modular VR treatme

The Correspondence of Bruno Bettelheim and Rudolf Ekstein.

This paper provides the historical, cultural, and clinical context for the relationship between Bruno Bettelheim (1903-1990) and Rudolf Ekstein (1912-2005). Both were Viennese-born and trained intellectuals who received doctorates in the human sciences from the University of Vienna in 1937. Both were deeply identified with lay analysis, emphasizing that for psychoanalysis to perpetuate itself it needed to promote serious and rigorous forms of research. Because Bettelheim was the better known of the two, this introduction focuses on Ekstein's family history, with special emphasis on his experie

After the fall of the Berlin Wall: perceptions and consequences of stability and change among middle-aged and older East and West Germans.

OBJECTIVES: This study empirically tested the self-systems theory of subjective change in light of the rapid change after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The theory predicts that individuals have a tendency to perceive stability and that perceived stability exerts a strong positive effect on subjective well-being. We would expect perceptions of decline and, to a lesser extent, perceptions of improvement to be related to lower levels of subjective well-being. METHODS: Data were from respondents aged 40-85 years who participated in the German Aging Survey. We used measures of well-being and tempor

The Role of Alexithymia in Social Learning and Feedback-Driven Social Inferences.

Dynamic social interactions and feedback are crucial for understanding others' emotions, particularly when confronted with contradictory emotional cues. Alexithymia, a condition that co-occurs with many psychiatric disorders, is characterized by impairment in emotional processing. However, computational mechanisms by which it alters social inferences based on feedback cues remain unexplored. To examine this, 60 participants with low and high levels of alexithymia completed an emotional learning task involving contradictory social (verbal and visual) cues to infer targets' emotions. Computation

Psychometric properties of the Self-Beliefs related to Social Anxiety (SBSA) scale in a sample of individuals with social anxiety disorder.

The Self-Beliefs related to Social Anxiety (SBSA) scale assesses maladaptive social-evaluative beliefs, a key aspect in models of social anxiety disorder (SAD) that is frequently measured in research and clinical contexts. The SBSA has been evaluated psychometrically in student samples, but not in a large sample of individuals diagnosed with SAD. The current study tested the psychometric properties of the SBSA in a sample of individuals with SAD pooled from several studies (total N = 284). Results showed that the optimal factor structure for the SBSA was a correlated three-factor model (high s

[The effect of social and monetary reward on inhibitory control in boys with hyperkinetic conduct disorder].

OBJECTIVE: Social reinforcement can improve inhibitory control in boys with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), suggesting that hyperkinetic conduct disorder (ADHD + CD/ODD), a combination of ADHD and conduct disorder (CD)/oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), might show similar improvements. This study investigated the effects of social and monetary reward on response inhibition in boys with ADHD + CD/ODD compared to healthy controls. METHOD: An incentive go/no-go task was applied. We hypothesized that the control group (n = 17) would show greater improvements in inhibitory contr

Managing complexities of inflammatory rheumatic diseases as a migrant-a qualitative exploration of health literacy experiences.

BACKGROUND: Migrants comprise over 17% of Norway's population and are at increased risk of limited health literacy, a key determinant of health. Health literacy is shaped by language, culture, social norms, discrimination, and health system responsiveness. Inflammatory rheumatic diseases are complex, chronic conditions requiring long-term, specialised care. Patients with these diseases and a migrant background, particularly those with limited proficiency in the dominant language, face additional barriers and poorer outcomes, yet their health literacy experiences remain underexplored. This stud

Challenging the Thrift Paradigm: When Decreasing Income Trajectory Drives Expensive Non-Conformity.

In an increasingly complex modern social information environment, in which consumers are exposed to both changes in economic conditions and pervasive social comparison cues, there remains limited research exploring the relationship between financial anticipation, social signals, and consumption choices. Using an experimental approach, we examine how income trajectories and social information shape consumption choices. Participants in our online decision task were randomly exposed to information indicating either increasing or decreasing income trajectories, alongside social information about t

Between being affected and being an active emotion 'manager': young women's accounts of social media use and wellbeing.

OBJECTIVE: A growing body of empirical research traces the impact of social media use on young women's psychological wellbeing. The aim of the present article is to explore young female users' affective relationship with social media platforms in the context of gendered, postfeminist self-making. DESIGN: Drawing on dialogical self-theory, this study analyses the interplay between different voices-of-the-self in participants' accounts of social media use. RESULTS: Participants construct social media use as a 'double-edged sword'. Being exposed to idealised content elicits self-othering, i.e.

Naltrexone alters the processing of social and emotional stimuli in healthy adults.

Endogenous opioids have complex social effects that may depend on specific receptor actions and vary depending on the "stage" of social behavior (e.g., seeking vs. responding to social stimuli). We tested the effects of a nonspecific opioid antagonist, naltrexone (NTX), on social processing in humans. NTX is used to treat alcohol and opiate dependence, and may affect both mu and kappa-opioid systems. We assessed attention ("seeking"), and subjective and psychophysiological responses ("responding") to positive and negative social stimuli. Based on literature suggesting mu-opioid blockade impair

Social Impact of Hepatic Encephalopathy.

Hepatic encephalopathy is a medical condition that stems from liver dysfunction, leading to the accumulation of toxins in the bloodstream. This can result in cognitive impairments, mood changes, and motor dysfunction. Its social impact includes challenges in employment, relationships, and daily functioning for affected individuals. Stigma and misunderstanding around the condition can further exacerbate the difficulties faced by both patients and their caregivers. Efforts to raise awareness, improve medical management, and provide support systems can help mitigate the social impact of hepatic e

Feedback-based training reduces ensemble perception bias of facial emotions in individuals with high social anxiety: A single-session randomized controlled trial.

People can efficiently extract summary statistics from a set of objects-a process known as ensemble perception-including the average emotion of a facial crowd. Individuals with high social anxiety, however, tend to perceive facial crowds as more negative, reflecting a systematic perceptual bias. Because the ability to interpret group emotions is important to adaptive social functioning, this study examined whether a feedback-based training paradigm could reduce ensemble perception bias, and whether its effects varied by social anxiety. A total of 120 Korean university students were randomly as

The nature of social anxiety disorder.

The essential feature of social anxiety disorder (social phobia) is a fear of scrutiny by other people in social or performance situations. The level of anxiety experienced by the person with social anxiety disorder is excessive, and results in substantial impairment in the sufferer's social, family, and professional life. Three distinct subtypes of the disorder have been identified: generalized social anxiety disorder, in which the individual fears a multitude of social situations; nongeneralized social anxiety disorder, in which only 2 or 3 situations are feared; and public-speaking phobia.
