Acute effects of ethanol on social behavior of adolescent and adult rats: role of familiarity of the test situation.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a time when the risk for extensive alcohol use is elevated. At least two important qualities of alcohol may contribute to extensive alcohol use in adolescence: its ability to facilitate certain forms of social behavior, including interactions with peers, and its properties to alleviate anxiety. These issues may be addressed using sensitive animal tests of social behavior. METHOD: A modified social interaction test was used to investigate acute effects of ethanol on different forms of social behavior (social investigation, contact behavior, and play fighting) and soc…

Oxytocin and cardiometabolic interoception: Knowing oneself affects ingestive and social behaviors.

Maintaining homeostasis while navigating one's environment involves accurately assessing and interacting with external stimuli while remaining consciously in tune with internal signals such as hunger and thirst. Both atypical social interactions and unhealthy eating patterns emerge as a result of dysregulation in factors that mediate the prioritization and attention to salient stimuli. Oxytocin is an evolutionarily conserved peptide that regulates attention to exteroceptive and interoceptive stimuli in a social environment by functioning in the brain as a modulatory neuropeptide to control soc…

Direct and interactive effects of parent, friend and schoolmate drinking on alcohol use trajectories.

OBJECTIVE: This study considered the unique and interactive roles of social norms from parents, friends and schools in predicting developmental trajectories of adolescent drinking and intoxication. DESIGN AND OUTCOME MEASURES: Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, which followed adolescents (N = 18,921) for 13 years, we used discrete mixture modelling to identify unique developmental trajectories of drinking and of intoxication. Next, multilevel multinomial regression models examined the role of alcohol-related social norms from parents, friends and schoolmates

Predictors of social anxiety in an opioid dependent sample and a control sample.

Compared to other mental health problems, social anxiety is under-acknowledged amongst opioid dependent populations. This study aimed to assess levels of social anxiety and identify its predictors in an opioid dependent sample and a matched control group. Opioid dependent participants (n=1385) and controls (n=417) completed the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS), the Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and a diagnostic interview. Regression analyses were used to test a range of predictors of social anxiety. Opioid dependent cases had higher mean scores on both scales compared to controls. Predictor…

Individual differences in high-level biological motion tasks correlate with autistic traits.

Human actions are rich in social cues and play an essential role in interacting with the social environment. Hence, the perception of biological motion (i.e., movement elicited by humans and other animals) is considered to be an important gauge of a person's social cognition capacities. It has been well-documented that Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is associated with difficulties in social interactions. In the present study, we examined whether individual differences in biological motion perception relate to the degree of autistic traits among people in the typically-developing population. We…

Exploring Social Context and Psychological Distress in Adult Canadians with Cannabis Use Disorder: To What Extent Do Social Isolation and Negative Relationships Predict Mental Health?

The objectives of this study were to explore perceived social support, negative social interactions, and psychological distress in Canadian adults who experience lifetime abuse, or dependence on cannabis (ADC), and to determine whether, and the extent to which variables of interest predict psychological distress. Data were extracted from a cross-sectional, national datafile representing a sample of 1503 individuals who met the criteria for a lifetime prevalence of ADC. Levels of perceived overall social support, and several subtypes were measured using the Social Provisions Scale (SPS), negati…

Internet communication: an activity that appeals to shy and socially phobic people?

Shyness (or social anxiety) and social phobia can be viewed as two distinct conditions, and this study investigates whether they are related to use of the Internet generally, and for communication purposes. 362 participants from two schools, a college and a university in the Teesside area in England were asked to complete Mattick and Clarke's (1998) Social Phobia (SPS) and Social Interaction Anxiety (SIAS) scales and also answer a questionnaire which asked them about their use of the Internet generally and for communication purposes. The findings from these suggested that social anxiety and so…

The social domains organization of mentalizing processes in adolescents: a contribution to the conceptualization of personality function and dysfunction in young people.

BACKGROUND: We propose and evaluate a contribution to the conceptualization and assessment of personality functioning based on social domains and mentalizing hypotheses. Social domains are distinct social contexts, such as with acquaintances and friends, with differentiated expectations regarding participants' behaviours and social attributions. The capacity to organize social participation according to these expectations requires the ability, we suggest, to modulate mentalizing processes domain by domain. Drawing on evidence that social domain organization is impaired in borderline personalit

Mapping the landscape of social behavior.

Social interaction is integral to animal behavior. However, lacking tools to describe it in quantitative and rigorous ways has limited our understanding of its structure, underlying principles, and the neuropsychiatric disorders, like autism, that perturb it. Here, we present a technique for high-resolution 3D tracking of postural dynamics and social touch in freely interacting animals, solving the challenging subject occlusion and part-assignment problems using 3D geometric reasoning, graph neural networks, and semi-supervised learning. We collected over 110 million 3D pose samples in interac…

tDCS-induced enhancement of cognitive flexibility in autism: role of frontal lobe and associated neural circuits.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction and restricted, repetitive behaviors (RRBs). These symptoms may stem from cognitive flexibility deficits, with dysfunction in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and related neural circuits proposed as underlying mechanisms. OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) could enhance PFC activity and functional connectivity, thereby improving cognitive flexibility in a valproic acid (VPA)-induced ASD rat model. METHODS: Pregnant Sprague-Daw…

Chlordiazepoxide reduces the generalised anxiety, but not the direct responses, of rats exposed to cat odor.

Rats were treated for 5 days with vehicle or chlordiazepoxide (CDP, 5, 10, or 20 mg/kg/day) and then exposed to a cloth impregnated with a neutral or cat odor. Those exposed to cat odor made significantly fewer contacts with the cloth and spent less time in contact with it and more time sheltering than those exposed to the neutral odor. CDP (5 mg/kg) significantly increased the time in contact with both odor cloths, but there were no other significant effects in the cat odor group. Rats previously exposed to cat odor showed significant anxiogenic responses in the social interaction and elevate…

If colors have gender: Color-gender stereotype and the impact on impression evaluation and interpersonal interaction.

There are gender-related associations in people's perceptions and judgment of color. This study verified the existence of more diverse gendered colors in the Chinese cultural context (pre-study). Furthermore, individuals hold color-gender stereotypes at both implicit and explicit levels. In explicit measurements, individuals generally believe that colors with male labels have more masculine qualities, while colors with female labels have more feminine qualities (Study 1). In implicit measurement, participants' response times for target lexical categorization and judgments increased significant

Early risk factors related to social functioning in young adults born very preterm.

BACKGROUND: Individuals born very preterm (VPT; <32 weeks' gestation) are at a greater risk of poorer social outcomes than individuals born … ted with lower social functioning in all domains at age 20. Medical risk was weakly associated with social interaction and social adjustment at age 20. CONCLUSIONS: Children born VPT with higher cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and sociodemographic risk have increased likelihood of lower social functioning in early adulthood than those without risk, and could bene …

Dravet syndrome (DS) presents a multifaceted clinical picture marked by epilepsy, cognitive impairments and behavioral disorders that progre … s, primarily due to difficulties in use of pragmatic language. Areas such as range of interests and social interaction are less affected compared to those with ASD, emphasizing differing profiles between the conditions. While children with DS and ID may have similar intellectual functioning, the different social communication deficits in DS indicate their role in th …

Is Likeability in the Eye of the Beholder? A Quasi-Experimental Study on Personality, Social Anxiety and the Need for Affiliation in Assessing the Likability of Socially Anxious Adults.

While most people desire acceptance and approval from their peers, previous research have shown that for anxious individuals often peers show a reduced willingness to pursue further interactions with them after initial interactions. To gain a deeper understanding of the factors influencing the process of likability, we conducted two studies. Using a zero-acquaintance paradigm and a quasi-experimental design, we aimed to investigate whether the likability of socially anxious and non-anxious individuals is primarily influenced by first impressions or the extent of their self-disclosure. The seco

The Empathic Responses: A Neglected Field for Research.

The more fully one comprehends the nature of the shifts in theoretical and methodological orientation which have been taking place in social psychology during the past two decades, the greater becomes his appreciation of the fundamental contributions made by Harry Stack Sullivan to this highly significant movement in social science. An appraisal of the changes here indicated has been made elsewhere1. Briefly stated the basic trend has been toward what may be called interactional theories of human behavior and personality and away from static atomistic attributive theories, with accompanying ef
