Biopsychosocial factors of quality of life among middle-aged adults living alone in South Korea: a secondary data analysis using the 2017 Korea Community Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate quality of life (QoL) in middle-aged adults living alone and identify comprehensive biological, psychological, interpersonal, and contextual factors related to QoL using the dynamic biopsychosocial model. As a secondary analysis, this study used data from the 2017 Korea Community Health Survey conducted by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. METHODS: Among the total 228,381 respondents, 10,639 middle-aged individuals aged 40-64 years from single-person households (5,036 men and 5,603 women) were included in the analysis. QoL was measure

Childhood maltreatment impacts the activity of the neural empathy but not theory of mind network: findings from a transdiagnostic sample.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment (CM) is a risk factor for psychopathology, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD) and somatic symptom disorder (SSD). One possible mechanism linking CM with psychopathology is social cognition, comprising empathy and theory of mind (ToM). While prior research has focused on the association of CM with behavioral empathy and ToM capacities, not much is known about its association with functional neural correlates. METHODS: The sample included N = 101 adults with PTSD, MDD, and SSD, as well as healthy volunteers (HV) wit

Peer interactions in autistic children and adolescents: A systematic review.

Peer interaction plays a central role in social, emotional, and cognitive development across childhood and adolescence. For autistic individuals, difficulties in peer interaction are a defining feature and are associated with reduced participation, limited social learning, and adverse outcomes such as loneliness, rejection, and isolation. Despite its importance, the literature on peer interactions in autism remains fragmented, employing diverse measures, age groups, and study designs, with inconsistent attention to individual and environmental factors. The aim of this systematic review was to

"Brain not right" and "lonely in a crowd": unveiling the central architecture of psychopathology in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: The co-occurrence of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and psychotic-like symptoms suggests the existence of the "obsessive-schizophrenic spectrum", and this study uses network analysis to explore their interaction mechanism. METHODS: A total of 528 patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) were included. A symptom network was constructed based on the Yale-Brown ObsessiveCompulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90), Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). Core nodes were identified through centrality indicators. RESULTS: "Bra

Association of Social Support With Brain Volume and Cognition.

IMPORTANCE: Cognitive resilience refers to the general capacity of cognitive processes to be less susceptible to differences in brain structure from age- and disease-related changes. Studies suggest that supportive social networks reduce Alzheimer disease and related disorder (ADRD) risk by enhancing cognitive resilience, but data on specific social support mechanisms are sparse. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of individual forms of social support with a global neuroanatomical measure of early ADRD vulnerability and cognition. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cros

[Evolution Characteristics and Driving Factors of the Coupling Network of the Agricultural "Land-Energy-Grain-Carbon" in the Yangtze River Economic Belt].

Based on the multidimensional evaluation indicator system of the agricultural "land-energy-grain-carbon" in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, this study calculates the coupling coordination levels of "land-energy-grain-carbon" in each province from 2011 to 2022 using the revised coupling coordination model. It discusses the structural characteristics of the spatial association network using social network analysis and explores the driving factors of the coupling network evolution using the dynamic exponential random graph model (TERGM). ① From 2011 to 2022, the coupling coordination level of th…

Altered neural correlates of affective processing after internet-delivered cognitive behavior therapy for social anxiety disorder.

Randomized controlled trials have yielded promising results for internet-delivered cognitive behavior therapy (iCBT) for patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD). The present study investigated anxiety-related neural changes after iCBT for SAD. The amygdala is a critical hub in the neural fear network, receptive to change using emotion regulation strategies and a putative target for iCBT. Twenty-two subjects were included in pre- and post-treatment functional magnetic resonance imaging at 3T assessing neural changes during an affective face processing task. Treatment outcome was assessed us

Barriers to healthcare coordination in market-based and decentralized public health systems: a qualitative study in healthcare networks of Colombia and Brazil.

Although integrated healthcare networks (IHNs) are promoted in Latin America in response to health system fragmentation, few analyses on the coordination of care across levels in these networks have been conducted in the region. The aim is to analyse the existence of healthcare coordination across levels of care and the factors influencing it from the health personnel' perspective in healthcare networks of two countries with different health systems: Colombia, with a social security system based on managed competition and Brazil, with a decentralized national health system. A qualitative, expl

A network meta-analysis of the effects of different rehabilitation intervention strategies on executive function in children and adolescents.

UNLABELLED: This network meta-analysis aimed to assess and compare the effectiveness of different non-pharmacological interventions for executive function in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This network meta-analysis followed PRISMA guidelines and searched multiple databases until 1 May 2025. Studies were selected based on PICOS criteria, including RCTs on ASD and executive function. The risk of bias was assessed via the Revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. The certainty of the evidence was appraised via the confidence in the network meta-analysis framework. Networ

Community-engaged randomised controlled trial to disseminate COVID-19 vaccine-related information and increase uptake among Black individuals in two US cities with rheumatic conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Inequities in COVID-19 infection and vaccine uptake among historically marginalised racial and ethnic groups in the USA persist. Individuals with rheumatic conditions, especially those who are immunocompromised, are especially vulnerable to severe infection, with significant racialised inequities in infection outcomes and in vaccine uptake. Structural racism, historical injustices and misinformation engender racial and ethnic inequities in vaccine uptake. Implications of personality and parental education on healthy lifestyles among adolescents.

Several studies have shown an association between personality and health status. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between personality traits, parental education and health-related lifestyles in a cohort of Spanish adolescents. This is a longitudinal study with a source population of 1,123 third-year students (aged 14-15) in secondary schools in Spain. At the baseline evaluation sociodemographic variables, parental education and personality (Big Five Questionnaire for Children) were collected. At 18 months of follow-up health related lifestyles, including adherence to a hea

Exploring the co-occurrence of internalizing problems and aggression among Chinese adolescents: A cross-lagged panel network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous longitudinal studies have established a high co-occurrence between internalizing problems and aggression. Yet, debate persists regarding the temporal ordering of their relationships, and few studies have examined the dynamic interplay between their specific symptoms. This study investigates the co-occurrence between internalizing problems and aggression at the symptom level among adolescents. METHODS: This study collected data from 1,672 Chinese adolescents (Mage = 13.94, SD = 0.73; 54.2% female) across three waves. Cross-lagged panel network (CLPN) analysis was used to e

Brain and behaviour phenotyping of a mouse model of neurofibromatosis type-1: an MRI/DTI study on social cognition.

Neurofibromatosis type-1 (NF1) is a common neurogenetic disorder and an important cause of intellectual disability. Brain-behaviour associations can be examined in vivo using morphometric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to study brain structure. Here, we studied structural and behavioural phenotypes in heterozygous Nf1 mice (Nf1(+/-) ) using T2-weighted imaging MRI and DTI, with a focus on social recognition deficits. We found that Nf1(+/-) mice have larger volumes than wild-type (WT) mice in regions of interest involved in social cognition, the prefrontal c

Enhancing demographic survey protocols to characterise household dynamics that influence health - a participatory approach from rural Eswatini.

Standard Western demographic survey protocols fail to capture dynamics, such as circular migration and support networks, that profoundly influence the health of non-Western domestic social groups, typically called households. Enhanced protocols are needed because survey data provide the primary evidence base for health policy and planning globally. We present the participatory development, implementation and analysis of a novel demographic survey protocol, that aimed to better capture domestic social dynamics in rural Eswatini, southern Africa. The multiple-method study incorporated participat

Speaking in Metaphors: Exploring Black Women's Communicated Sense-Making of Postpartum Depression.

Guided by the communicated sense-making model, we describe the results of an analysis of interviews with 15 Black women about their experiences with postpartum depression (PPD). The findings indicate that the women made sense of their experience using three categories of metaphors: (1) mobility, (2) cultural expectations, and (3) social support. These categories of metaphors provide evidence that the discourse of motherhood as distressing is expressed in the narratives of Black women with PPD, even as they seek to fulfill the demands of the discourse of motherhood as intensive. The metaphors a

Mental health differences between young adults with and without same-sex contact: A simultaneous examination of underlying mechanisms.

Previous research has documented that sexual minorities are more likely than heterosexual people to experience mental health problems, but little is known about how these disparities emerge. Analysis of data from Miami-Dade County, Florida, shows that young adults reporting same-sex contact have higher levels of depressive symptoms and drug use than those without such contact, but that different processes explain the disparities in the two outcomes. A substantial portion of the gap in depressive symptoms is explained by sexual minorities' higher levels of stress exposure and their lower levels
