Social Relationships and Onset of Functional Limitation among Older Adults with Chronic Conditions: Does gender matter?

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the longitudinal association between social relationships and physical functioning among community-dwelling older adults with chronic conditions. METHODS: Self-reported questionnaires were distributed and collected between 2014 and 2017 from participants ≥65 years old. The Index of Social Interaction was used to evaluate social relationships and the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) subscale of the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology Index of Competence was used to examine functional status. RESULTS: A total of 422 participants (19

Interpersonal Family Dynamics Relate to Hippocampal CA Subfield Structure.

Social environments that are extremely enriched or adverse can influence hippocampal volume. Though most individuals experience social environments that fall somewhere in between these extremes, substantially less is known about the influence of normative variation in social environments on hippocampal structure. Here, we examined whether hippocampal volume tracks normative variation in interpersonal family dynamics in 7- to 12-year-olds and adults recruited from the general population. We focused on interpersonal family dynamics as a prominent feature of one's social world. Given evidence tha

The impact of social skills training for social anxiety disorder: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) impacts social, occupational and academic functioning. Although many interventions report change in social distress, improvement in social behavior remains under-addressed. This investigation examined the additive impact of social skills training (SST) for the treatment of SAD. METHOD: Using a sample of 106 adults who endorsed SAD across numerous social settings, participants were randomized to exposure therapy (imaginal and in vivo) alone, a combination of SST and exposure therapy known as Social Effectiveness Therapy (SET), or a wait list control. Does the Fast Track Intervention Prevent Later Psychosis Symptoms?

The Fast Track (FT) intervention was a multimodal preventive intervention addressing antisocial development across 10 years of childhood and early adolescence. The intervention included parent management training, child social-cognitive skills training, peer coaching and mentoring, academic skills tutoring, and a classroom social-emotional learning program. While not specifically designed to target psychosis symptoms (e.g., social withdrawal, thought abnormalities), the present study aimed to examine whether the FT intervention prevented psychosis symptoms through childhood and adolescence and

Adolescent Social Networks and Physical Intimate Partner Violence Among Colombian Rural Adolescents.

The current study analyzes individual and social network correlates of adolescent engagement in physical intimate partner violence (IPV) utilizing socio-centric data from a high-school population of 242 adolescents from rural Colombia. We studied self-reported victimization and perpetration for boys and girls. First, we used logistic regression to explore the relationship between adolescents' IPV engagement and school peers' IPV engagement, school violence victimization, and social network position, controlling for gender and age (N=111). Second, we used social network statistical methods to i

Contemporary Outcomes in Chronic Limb-Threatening Ischemia: The Role of the Social Vulnerability Index.

BACKGROUND: Health disparities have been shown to influence the outcomes of vascular surgery interventions. This study aimed to analyze the association of the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) with the outcomes of patients undergoing a lower extremity intervention for chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI). METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study. Between 2018 and 2023, all patients undergoing a primary intervention (bypass, BYP; endovascular interventions, EVs; or major amputation, AMP) for CLTI presenting with wound ischemia foot infection (WIfI) stages 1-5 were analyzed. Patients pr

Predictive factors of social disability in anorexic and bulimic patients.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine whether subjects suffering from anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN) would demonstrate more severe social disability than a control group; and whether social disability could be best explained as a function of the eating disorder itself or as a function of comorbid anxiety or depressive disorders. METHOD: Subjects were 166 AN subjects, 105 BN subjects and 271 control subjects matched for age, sex and socio-economic status. Prevalence of anxiety or depressive disorders was assessed (through the Mini International Neuropsychiatric

Social determinants of health and outcome of extremely preterm infants: A Swiss population-based study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Social determinants of health (SDoH) are associated with the outcome of preterm infants, but data in Switzerland are lacking. The aim of this study was to assess the associations of maternal nationality, parental socioeconomic status (SES) and language, with perinatal and 18-month-old outcomes of extremely preterm infants in Switzerland. METHODS: Surviving extremely preterm infants born in our tertiary care neonatal centre between 2009-2020 were evaluated at the age of 18 corrected months using Bayley Scales of Infant Development, and neurological examination. We analyzed

Measuring associations between social anxiety and use of different types of social media using the Swedish Social Anxiety Scale for Social Media Users: A psychometric evaluation and cross-sectional study.

Research on the association between social anxiety and social media usage remains inconclusive: despite the preference for computer-mediated communication there is currently no clear empirical support for social anxiety being associated with longer duration of social media use. Self-report measures for social anxiety that are adapted for the context of social media could facilitate further research. The current study aimed to develop a Swedish version of the recently developed Social Anxiety Scale for Social Media Users (SAS-SMU), evaluate its psychometric properties, and explore associations

The impact of childhood trauma on psychosocial functioning and physical health in a non-clinical community sample of young adults.

OBJECTIVE: Given the fundamental emotional, social and physical development that occurs during the early years of life, childhood experiences are formative in shaping a person's life trajectory. Childhood trauma is a prevalent, multifaceted issue with well-documented long-term adverse health effects in clinical populations however; the impact of childhood trauma in the community is less clear. To address this, this study investigated how childhood trauma may impact physical and psychological health, sleep quality and autonomic function in a non-clinical community sample of adults. METHOD: Par

Money and Mental Illness: A Study of the Relationship Between Poverty and Serious Psychological Problems.

UNLABELLED: Several studies have indicated a co-occurrence between mental problems, a bad economy, and social isolation. Medical treatments focus on reducing the extent of psychiatric problems. Recent research, however, has highlighted the possible effects of social initiatives. The aim of this study was to examine the relation between severe mental illness, economic status, and social relations. METHOD: a financial contribution per month was granted to 100 individuals with severe mental illnesses for a 9-month period. Assessments of the subjects were made before the start of the intervention

Feasibility of using social networking technologies for health research among men who have sex with men: a mixed methods study.

This study aims to assess the feasibility and acceptability of using social networking as a health research platform among men who have sex with men (MSM). Fifty-five MSM (primarily African American and Latino) were invited to join a "secret" group on the social networking website, Facebook. Peer leaders, trained in health education, posted health-related content to groups. The study and analysis used mixed (qualitative and quantitative) methods. Facebook conversations were thematically analyzed. Latino and African American participants voluntarily used social networking to discuss health-rela

Removing the health domain from the Index of Multiple Deprivation 2004-effect on measured inequalities in census measure of health.

The Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) 2004 is a summary measure of area-level deprivation in England that combines weighted scores in seven deprivation domains. IMD 2004 is used extensively by local public health departments and researchers to describe and monitor socioeconomic inequalities in health. However, the inclusion of a health domain in IMD 2004 leads to the possibility of 'mathematical coupling' where a relationship between IMD 2004 and markers of health is predicated by the inclusion of health in IMD 2004-effectively placing measures of health on both sides of the correlation equa

A narrative approach to the evaluation of supportive housing: stories of homeless people who have experienced serious mental illness.

We present the findings of a narrative approach to the evaluation of supportive housing for formerly homeless people who have experienced serious mental illness. According to the accounts of 11 men and 9 women, their youth and adult years were filled with personal problems, troubled relationships, and a lack of adequate social resources. Since entering supportive housing, participants noted more stability in their lives and the beginning of journeys to recover positive personal identities, restore or develop new supportive relationships, and reclaim resources vital to leading lives with dignit

Hostility and facial expression in young men and women: is social regulation more important than negative affect?

Behavioral differences may clarify the link between hostility and health. This study examined facial expression. Seventy-two low- and high-hostile undergraduates underwent the Type A Structured Interview (SI) and a test of social anxiety. Facial behavior was measured with the Facial Action Coding System. Low-hostile participants displayed non-Duchenne smiles more frequently than high-hostile participants during the SI. There were no group differences in the expression of disgust. The results identify differences in the nonverbal behavior of hostile people. Restricted use of non-Duchenne smiles

Social support and self-esteem predict changes in bipolar depression but not mania.

INTRODUCTION: Our own and other research has suggested that social support predicts course of bipolar disorder, with particularly strong effects on depressive symptoms. Within this paper, we examine which components of social support appear most powerful. METHODS: Thirty-one individuals with Bipolar I disorder were followed longitudinally for 9 months. Participants completed a standardized symptom severity interview monthly, and at a 2-month follow-up, they completed the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List. At a 6-month follow-up, they completed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Inventory. RESULTS

Getting caught in misconduct: conceptions of adolescents with and without learning disabilities.

This study examined adolescents' conceptions about how to respond after being caught in misconduct, in order to determine whether students with learning disabilities differ from nondisabled students in their beliefs regarding apprehension. A total of 88 students with learning disabilities (62 male, 26 female) and 84 nondisabled students (45 male, 39 female) were interviewed about 10 scenarios in which a teenager was caught by authorities after participating in misconduct, either alone or with a peer. The mean age of the students was 16 years (SD = 1.4). The results indicated that the students

The perception of emotion by schizophrenic patients.

Studies which have examined the perception of emotion by schizophrenic patients have produced conflicting results, an outcome which may, in part, be due to difficulties in presenting a realistic portrayal of emotion. This study exposed 32 schizophrenic patients in remission and ten controls to five videotaped scenes of emotional situations played by actors. The schizophrenic patients were divided into three groups, namely those living with high-EE relatives, those living with low-EE relatives and those living alone, in order to test the hypothesis that patients in a high-EE environment are les
