Abnormal axon guidance signals and reduced interhemispheric connection via anterior commissure in neonates of marmoset ASD model.

In autism spectrum disorder (ASD), disrupted functional and structural connectivity in the social brain has been suggested as the core biological mechanism underlying the social recognition deficits of this neurodevelopmental disorder. In this study, we aimed to identify genetic and neurostructural abnormalities at birth in a non-human primate model of ASD, the common marmoset with maternal exposure to valproic acid (VPA), which has been reported to display social recognition deficit in adulthood. Using a comprehensive gene expression analysis, we found that 20 genes were significantly downreg

Functional Isolation: Understanding Isolation in Trafficking Survivors.

The study of sexual exploitation of trafficked victims cannot be done without understanding their enforced isolation. To better understand the dynamics of isolation, this study examined how traffickers used different elements of isolation and how such tactics may have contributed to the traffickers' success in maintaining control over the victim(s). We examined in-depth narratives from 14 women between the ages of 20 to 53, primarily immigrants, who were recruited from an agency serving victims of sex trafficking in a large metropolitan city. The tactics used by traffickers varied and included

Longitudinal associations between depressive problems, academic performance, and social functioning in adolescent boys and girls.

Depressive problems and academic performance, social well-being, and social problems in adolescents are strongly associated. However, longitudinal and bidirectional relations between the two remain unclear, as well as the role of gender. Consequently, this study focuses on the relation between depressive problems and three types of functioning in adolescents while testing gender differences. Depressive problems and functioning of 2,230 children were measured with structured questionnaires. The measurements took place biennially over 3 waves, from late childhood into adolescence (age range = 10

The effectiveness of a multi-dimensional intervention model combining cognitive behavioral therapy and social support in hospitalized depressed patients.

BACKGROUND: Depression management in hospitalized patients with moderate-to-severe major depressive disorder (MDD) often relies on pharmacotherapy, with limited integration of psychosocial interventions. This study introduces a novel multidimensional model combining cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and structured social support, addressing a critical gap in inpatient care. METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort study included 212 inpatients diagnosed with moderate-to-severe MDD between November 2023 and December 2024. Patients were assigned to either routine care (n = 104) or an in

Conceptualising hepatitis C stigma: A thematic synthesis of qualitative research.

BACKGROUND: Stigma is an important element in the experience of living with chronic viral hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV), impacting healthcare access and uptake as well as health outcomes. Conceptualisations of stigma in research are, however, often assumed and implicit. This study aimed to synthesise and critically engage with the qualitative literature to provide an overarching conceptualisation of stigma as it pertains to viral hepatitis. METHODS: We critically reviewed qualitative literature that mobilised concepts or theories of stigma in relation to viral hepatitis. We searched seven ele

Stigma as a Social Determinant of Health: A Policy Classification Framework and Call to Action.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points Stigma functions as a social determinant of health (SDOH), producing population health inequities through resource deprivation, social exclusion, constrained health care, physiological stress, and diminished agency-yet it lacks formal SDOH classification. Because stigma operates as a fundamental cause of health inequalities, policy responses must extend beyond health care systems to encompass housing, employment, education, and social participation. Discrimination is already classified as an SDOH; formal stigma classification would address the broader ecosystem that e

Student Satisfaction in Social Media-Based Learning Environments: Development, Validation, and Psychometric Evaluation of the CuSAERS (Questionnaire of Satisfaction With Educational Activities Performed on Social Media).

BACKGROUND: Social media platforms are increasingly integrated into higher education, enabling collaborative, student-centered learning. Yet, few instruments specifically measure students' satisfaction with these activities across platforms. A brief, valid tool is needed to evaluate perceived quality and guide instructional design in social media-based learning environments. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the use of social media as educational tools in the university environment, with the aim of designing and validating the CuSAERS (Questionnaire of Satisfaction With Educational Activitie

The anticipatory and consummatory interpersonal pleasure scale: Applicability to Chinese OCD patients.

As a transdiagnostic symptom, social anhedonia has gained increasing attention. Evidence suggests that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients demonstrate social anhedonia. This study examined the psychometric properties of the Anticipatory and Consummatory Interpersonal Pleasure Scale (ACIPS) in an undergraduate sample and Chinese OCD patients. Furthermore, we explored the relationship between clinical symptoms and ACIPS scores. This study involved 3,306 undergraduate students and 293 patients with OCD. Internal consistency and convergent validity of ACIPS were examined. Confirmatory fac

Rising and falling on the social ladder: The bidimensional social mobility beliefs scale.

Recent works in the field of Social Psychology have shown the importance of studying subjective social mobility from different perspectives. In the literature about subjective societal mobility, most of the research is focused on the mobility-immobility framing. However, several authors suggested studying social mobility beliefs effects differentiating according to mobility's trajectory, that is, upward (i.e., improving status over time) and downward (i.e., getting worse in status over time). The present research was motivated by the lack of measures that discriminate between beliefs in upward

The Intersections of Ethnicity, Nativity Status and Socioeconomic Position in Relation to Periodontal Status: A Cross-Sectional Study in London, England.

The role of migration as a social determinant of periodontitis has been overlooked. Intersectionality theory could help understand how immigration status interacts with other social determinants of health to engender inequalities in periodontitis. The objective of the present study was to evaluate whether ethnicity, nativity status and socioeconomic position intersect to structure social inequalities in periodontal status. Data from 1936 adults in a deprived and multi-ethnic area of London were analysed. The numbers of teeth with probing depth and clinical attachment loss were determined from

Multidimensional Social Isolation and All-Cause Mortality Among Middle-Aged and Older Adults in China: Gender and Rural-Urban Differences.

This study examines whether multidimensional social isolation is associated with all-cause mortality and explores whether these associations vary by gender and rural-urban residence in China. Using nationally representative longitudinal data from 12,686 adults aged 45 and older in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2011-2020), we estimated Cox proportional hazards models examining social isolation as structural disconnectedness across five domains: partnership status, contact with parents, contact with children, contact with friends, and social participation. Social isolation

μ-Opioid Receptor (Oprm1) Copy Number Influences Nucleus Accumbens Microcircuitry and Reciprocal Social Behaviors.

The μ-opioid receptor regulates reward derived from both drug use and natural experiences, including social interaction, through actions in the nucleus accumbens. Here, we studied nucleus accumbens microcircuitry and social behavior in male and female mice with heterozygous genetic knockout of the μ-opioid receptor (Oprm1+/-). This genetic condition models the partial reduction of μ-opioid receptor signaling reported in several neuropsychiatric disorders. We first analyzed inhibitory synapses in the nucleus accumbens, using methods that differentiate between medium spiny neurons (MSNs) express

A neuro-computational social learning framework to facilitate transdiagnostic classification and treatment across psychiatric disorders.

Social deficits are among the core and most striking psychiatric symptoms, present in most psychiatric disorders. Here, we introduce a novel social learning framework, which consists of neuro-computational models that combine reinforcement learning with various types of social knowledge structures. We outline how this social learning framework can help specify and quantify social psychopathology across disorders and provide an overview of the brain regions that may be involved in this type of social learning. We highlight how this framework can specify commonalities and differences in the soci

Direct and indirect effects of parenting and children's goals on child aggression.

This study tested a dual-mediation model of the relations among harsh parenting, hostile social information processing, and level of child aggression in a sample of 239 (150 male, 89 female) 2nd- to 4th-grade children. The theoretical model posited that harsh parenting has both direct and indirect effects on child level of aggression, with the indirect effects mediated through children's social goals. The model further posited that the impact of social goals on aggression is mediated through other social cognitive processes (i.e., attributions of hostile intent, hostile solution generation, an

Social fear memory as a framework for understanding social defeat stress and psychopathology.

Social defeat is a potent stressor in both rodents and humans that, under conditions of chronic or severe stress, can lead to persistent social avoidance. This review synthesizes evidence supporting the view that social defeat promotes the formation of social fear memory through associative learning mechanisms that parallel classical fear conditioning. Drawing on preclinical models, we describe how the context of social defeat functions as a conditioned stimulus, while the experience of defeat serves as an unconditioned stimulus, giving rise to fear-related behaviors such as freezing and socia

Higher Social Rejection Sensitivity in Opioid-Dependent Patients Is Related to Smaller Insula Gray Matter Volume: A Voxel-Based Morphometric Study.

Opioid-dependent patients are highly sensitized to negative social feedback, and increased social rejection sensitivity was linked to adverse treatment outcome, but its neurobiological underpinnings have not been understood yet. The present study investigated gray matter (GM) volume differences between 19 opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) patients and 20 healthy controls using magnetic resonance imaging and voxel-based morphometry. Associations of GM volumes with subjective feelings of exclusion and inclusion during a social ostracism (Cyberball) paradigm, with rejection sensitivity, social i

A qualitative evaluation of cognitive-behavioural therapy components for social anxiety in autistic adults: Lived experiences from a modified group program.

Cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based treatment for social anxiety. However, despite the high prevalence of social anxiety among autistic adults, much less is known about how autistic people experience each CBT component used in treatment. This qualitative study explores autistic adults' perspectives on a modified cognitive-behaviour therapy group programme for social anxiety, focusing on the perceived effectiveness of CBT components and the identification of needed modifications. Twenty-seven participants who completed the intervention took part in semi-structured interviews.

Self-esteem and fear of negative evaluation as mediators between family socioeconomic status and social anxiety in Chinese emerging adults.

AIMS: The social causation hypothesis suggests that the stress in connection with a depressing social position results in the development of mental disorders. This study examines the psychological mechanisms underlying the link between family socioeconomic status (SES) and social anxiety in Chinese emerging adults. METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was given to a representative sample (N = 717) of undergraduate students (17-23 years old) at three universities in China. Correlational and structural equation modeling analyses were employed to test the hypothesized three-path effect of
