"Groove pancreatitis" is a form of segmental pancreatitis affecting the head of the pancreas which is localized within the "groove" between the head of the organ, the duodenum and the common bile duct. We diagnosed this form of pancreatitis in 30 out of 123 surgical duodenopancreatectomy specimens of chronic pancreatitis (24.4%). Dislocations of the patella are discussed in the light of their pathogenesis, their possible injury pattern and their consequences. An exemplary case is presented. Especially the injury to the retropatellar cartilage with following chondromalacia--sometimes initiating the development of patellofemoral osteoarthritis--renders the dislocation of the patella a severe injury of the knee region. In case of spontaneous reduction and uncertain history the diagnosis may be difficult. A specialized type of blood vessel is demonstrated within the dense soft tissue areas of the vestibular aqueduct and vascular channels of the surrounding bone, including the paravestibular canaliculus (PVC). In the past 20 years, we have treated 28 patients with idiopathic varicocele. The cases are described and the literature is reviewed in relation to clinical presentation and treatment. Since there is a correlation between varicocele and sub-fertility early surgical treatment is advocated for children and adolescents. The surgical approach described by Ivanissevich with an inguinal approach and high ligation of the testicularis vein is preferred and this allows access for associated conditions which we found in one third of our patients.

There are several unique aspects of O2 therapy in infants. Inhalation of O2 by preterm infants decreases the frequency of apnea and cyanosis, and increases the ventilatory response to CO2, but the reasons for this are unclear.
