BACKGROUND: Environmental noise is one of the most pervasive ecological health issues in modern urban settings, contributing to the onset of hearing damage but also to the development of annoyance, sleep disturbance, cardiovascular diseases, and impaired communication. For people with hearing impairment of any age, the main challenge posed by noisy environments is not merely detecting sound but understanding speech against a competing background-a task heavily related to cognition.

Much of the research evidence relating to the physical learning environment of schools is inconclusive, contradictory or incomplete. Nevertheless, within this confusing area, research from a number of disciplines, using a range of methodologies, points to the negative impact of noise on students' learning. New developments are presented and discussed for the interactive display and separate measurement of frication and nasality in addition to voice quality. Different clinical problems require different therapeutic and quantitative approaches and these are ideally supported by appropriate combinations of speech pattern elements. Particular use has been made of the laryngograph signal in order to solve the problems of analysis and so that the displays can be given both a sense of immediacy and be highly accurate.

Modifying the vocal tract alters a speaker's previously learned acoustic-articulatory relationship. This study investigated the contribution of auditory feedback to the process of adapting to vocal-tract modifications. Subjects said the word /tas/ while wearing a dental prosthesis that extended the length of their maxillary incisor teeth.
