Ten years' experience with bone conduction hearing aids in the Western Cape, South Africa.

Untreated conductive and mixed hearing losses as a result of middle ear pathology or congenital ear malformations can lead to poor speech, language and academic outcomes in children. Lack of access to centralised hearing healthcare in resource-constrained environments limits opportunities for children with hearing loss. Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital (RCWMCH) is one of only two dedicated paediatric hospitals in sub-Saharan Africa. Between 2016 and 2021, 29 children received implanted bone conduction hearing devices, and 104 children were fitted with bone conduction devices on softb

[Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing--the Tel Aviv Voice and Swallowing Disorders Clinic].

Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) involves passing a fiberoptic laryngoscope transnasally to visualize the hypopharynx, larynx, and proximal trachea in order to assess swallowing disorders. FEES has been compared with the modified barium swallow (MBS) (the presumed "gold standard"). To date, reports have demonstrated that FEES is as sensitive as, or even more sensitive, for use as a tool in swallowing assessment compared with the MBS. FEES provides the clinician with a safe, portable, effective, and valid means of evaluating individuals with swallowing disturbances. FEES al

[A 68-year-old man with speech disturbance as the initial symptom followed by bradykinesia and dementia. Clinical conference].

We report a 68-year-old man with progressive speech disturbance and dementia. He was well until 1995, when he noted an onset of difficulty in speech. He was able to name simple objects and understand language, however, he showed great difficulty in spontaneous speech. In 1998, he visited our service. He was alert and oriented, but he showed moderate degree of dementia. He did not appear to have aphasia but he showed marked dysarthria and slurred speech. He showed limb-kinetic apraxia in his right hand. He showed moderate restriction in his vertical gaze, masked face, and dysphagia. He walked n

Clinicians' Perspectives on Diagnosing and Treating Childhood Apraxia of Speech in Children Under 3 Years Old.

PURPOSE: Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a pediatric speech sound disorder with genetic and neurological underpinnings, implying its presence at birth. While early identification and intervention offer clear benefits, clinicians' perspectives on early diagnosis of CAS remain unclear. This study examined speech-language pathologists' (SLPs') knowledge, beliefs, and clinical decision making regarding CAS in children under 3 years old. METHOD: A novel survey was distributed to SLPs working with children under 3 years old (N = 298). Respondents shared demographic information, CAS training an

Impacts of a Dysphagia Screening Questionnaire on Speech Pathology Input Using a Transdisciplinary Approach for Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in a Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program.

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in pulmonary rehabilitation programs (PRPs) are not routinely screened for dysphagia. An Australian regional health service audit revealed that patients with COPD are frequently referred to speech pathology during acute admissions, rather than proactively to mitigate the risk of dysphagia-related consequences. Referral patterns to speech pathology using a novel transdisciplinary approach for identifying at risk for dysphagia patients in a PRP were explored. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of a transdisciplinary dysp

Knowledge of the Voice in the Teachers' Population and their Ability to Refer Children with Voice Disorders to a Speech-Language Pathologist.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to investigate (1) the knowledge of primary school teachers regarding voice and voice disorders, (2) the primary school teacher's ability to identify and refer a dysphonic child to a speech-language pathologist (SLP), and (3) potential contributing factors that might affect this ability. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Thirty-one primary school teachers (30 women, one man) with a mean age of 33 years (range: 22-57 years; SD: 11.1 years) were included in this study. They filled out an online questionnaire, gathering demographic information, estimations of th

Implications of Variability in Clinical Bedside Swallowing Assessment Practices by Speech Language Pathologists.

Speech language pathology (SLP) clinical bedside swallowing assessments (CBSA) are a cornerstone of quality care for patients in acute hospitals who have dysphagia. The CBSA informs clinical diagnosis and decisions regarding further instrumental assessment, and is used to develop a management plan and monitor progress. However, self-report and retrospective research shows that SLPs are highly variable in their use of assessment components considered by experts to be important for quality CBSA, casting doubt on the validity and reliability of CBSA. This prospective study describes the component

French Translation and Validation of an Objective Swallowing Rating Scale: The PAS.

INTRODUCTION: Oropharyngeal dysphagia is a severe swallowing disorder with consequences that can be life-threatening or impair quality of life. One of the major risks is laryngeal penetration, which can lead to the bolus being aspirated. It is best assessed and quantified using the Penetration-Aspiration Scale (PAS), which is a validated tool in English. Our aim was to translate in French and validate the French version of the Penetration-Aspiration Scale (Fr-PAS). METHODS: Our study was 2-fold: (i) to assess the contribution of the Fr-PAS for French-speaking speech-language therapists (SLTs)
