Degenerative disorders in the spine are normal, age-related phenomena and largely asymptomatic in most cases. Conservative management of lumbar and cervical spondylosis is the mainstay of treatment, and most patients with symptomatic degenerative changes respond appropriately with nonsurgical management. This report describes primary leptomeningeal lymphoma (PLML) of the spine in a 58-year-old female. LML is rare, especially in the immunocompetent, and it is almost always secondary in origin. To our knowledge, there have been very few cases of PLML of the lumbar spine reported in the literature and even fewer reports using recent MR imaging (MRI) technology to aid with diagnosis. MRI is useful in differentiating CNS lesions and may be helpful in the diagnosis of this extremely rare primary lymphoma. PLML is briefly reviewed.

The authors present the diagnostic methods and basic surgical procedures used in treatment of spinal neoplasms. Both metastatic and primary spinal tumours lead to instability and loss of the protective function. Spinal cord can be damaged by compression or increased mobility of the vertebral column. Burst fractures are less common in children than in adults because of the greater mobility and elasticity of the pediatric spine. Because of these spine characteristics, these fractures may behave differently in childhood than in adulthood. We present a 15-year-old patient diagnosed with peripheral neurofibromatosis (NF-1), who was admitted with paraparesis caused by a large intrathoracic tumor with an intracanalicular component that affected the spinal cord.
