BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA) is a hereditary spinocerebellar degeneration caused by expansion of a trinucleotide CAG repeat encoding a polyglutamine tract in a disease protein atrophin-1. The clinical features include ataxia, choreoathetosis, and dementia, which result from neural degeneration caused by the mutant atrophin-1.

It is generally thought that the early pre-tubular chick heart is formed by fusion of the anterior or cephalic limits of the paired cardiogenic fields. Different histochemical techniques were applied to examine the morphological features of the secretory cells of hypopharyngeal glands in the wasp Polistes versicolor. The results showed that most analyzed individuals present active glands with secretion stored in the cytoplasm. In some glands, morphological analyses revealed the presence of degenerative characteristics. Analyses of cellular integrity, however, did not detect dead cells. The results showed that, in P. versicolor, the development and regression of the hypopharyngeal glands were not age related, unlike glands of social bees.

A number of ongoing delayed effects have now been described in the progeny of an irradiated cell. These are grouped under the rubric of radiation induced genomic instability. Perhaps the best characterized is the dynamic production of chromosomal rearrangements in some clonally expanded cells surviving irradiation. In this chapter we provide the protocols for irradiation, cell culture, chromosome analysis, and characterization of the status of genomic stability in the context of delayed radiation effects.

Meningitis is the most common feature of cryptococcal infection of the nervous system. We herein describe the case of a 48-year-old man with fulminant cryptococcal myeloradiculitis, whose initial symptoms were impotence, dysuria and weakness of the lower extremities. He had been administered prednisolone and azathioprine for 7years for ulcerative colitis before onset of myeloradiculitis. He finally developed meningoencephalitis and died 2 months after onset despite treatment with amphotericin B and flucytosine. Animal brain samples received at WHO Collaborating Centre laboratory at National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) during the years 1991-2002 were tested by Seller's stain, Fluorescent Antibody Test (FAT) and Mouse Innoculation Test (MIT) as methods of rabies diagnosis. Negri bodies on Seller's staining could be detected in 52.5% of MIT positive brains, the concordance of this test with MIT was found to be 77.8%. With the aim of evaluating exfoliative cytology for the diagnosis of paracoccidioidomycosis oral lesions, eight patients that presented the disease were studied. The presence of fungi was demonstrated in all these cases. It was concluded that the oral exfoliative cytology exam can be effectively used in the diagnosis of paracoccidioidomycosis and contribute to the therapeutic control of oral forms of this mycosis.

Isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol) can be used as a substitute for ethyl alcohol in tissue dehydration during embedding into paraffin and dehydration of stained sections. The use of isopropyl alcohol during paraffinization allows us to exclude treatment with intermediate solvents of paraffin (chloroform, xylene, and benzene), which reduces the degree of tissue compaction and simplifies and accelerates histological assay.

We describe a technique of capsule staining called capsule painting. Using a Khokhar capsule painting cannula, the dye is spread directly over the anterior capsule but to no other part of the anterior chamber. There is minimal turbulence in the anterior chamber as there is no need to replace the injected viscoelastic material. The use of minimal dye and viscoelastic material reduces the cost of surgery.

Knowledge of the distribution of VDSC in living cells is important for studies of neuronal excitability, development, and plasticity. Recent genetic studies have shown that Apert's syndrome results from mutations of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) receptor 2 gene. We were interested in investigating the expression of FGF receptor 2 at the tissue level in children with Apert's syndrome. We studied FGF receptor activity in cranial sutures of children with Apert's syndrome and nonsyndromic, isolated craniosynostosis. Fourteen children between the ages of 6 months and 12 months were studied. Five of these children had Apert's syndrome with coronal suture stenosis. Nine children had an isolated, nonsyndromic coronal stenosis.

Paraurethral glands of the female urethra, which are assumed to be embryologically homologous to the male prostate gland, are possible origins for diverticular cancer of the urethra. A case of primary adenocarcinoma arising in a female urethral diverticulum is presented. Pathology revealed a columnar/mucinous type adenocarcinoma which stained positively for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and negatively for PSA. Normal paraurethral ducts located near the urethra and normal urethral epithelium also stained positively for CEA. These findings suggest that the adenocarcinoma in our case originated

BACKGROUND: Many veterans who were involved in the Persian Gulf theater of operations have had a variety of unexplained physical complaints, collectively called the Gulf War syndrome or similar names. There has been much debate on the issue and numerous publications, both in the medical and the lay press. Gonadal aromatase expression has been demonstrated in human Leydig, granulosa, and thecal cells, but never in human germ cells. In an attempt to explain the unique occurrence of isosexual precocious puberty in a young girl with a hCG-secreting suprasellar germinoma, we demonstrated the presence of aromatase expression in the germ cell component of this tumor.
