Post-Traumatic Growth and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Acute Myocardial Infarction among Younger and Older Adults: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: While the physical implications of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) have been extensively studied, its psychological aspects, particularly post-traumatic growth (PTG) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have gained increasing attention. This retrospective cohort study aimed to investigate the correlations between age, PTG, and PTSD in the context of AMI. METHODS: A total of 250 cases of patients with AMI were included in the study, sourced from the coronary care unit of Hanzhong Central Hospital and followed up in the outpatient department from January 2017 to June 2023. Th

The effects of traumatic brain Injury, post-traumatic stress disorder on Amyloid-β associated network hyperconnectivity and progression of gray matter atrophy.

BACKGROUND: Amyloid-β associated network hypersynchrony is an early manifestation of pre-clinical Alzheimer's Disease (AD). The overall goal was to investigate a. how TBI and PTSD influence hypersynchrony expression and b. how progressing gray matter atrophy affects hypersynchrony expression. METHODS: T1-weighted images, resting-state fMRIs and amyloid-β SUVRs were obtained from 234 DoD-ADNI subjects with or without TBI and/or PTSD. The denoised BOLD signal from 382 rois was extracted with CONN and dynamic resting state analysis was used to identify 8 states including one corresponding to a h

Predictors of Postpartum Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Following Traumatic Birth: The Influence of Lifetime Trauma, Violence, and Coping Strategies-A Prospective Study.

Background/Objectives: Childbirth, although generally a positive life event, can sometimes be experienced as traumatic, leading to postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder. Emergency caesarean section and operative vaginal delivery are associated with elevated psychological distress, while factors such as lifetime trauma, domestic violence, anxiety, and coping strategies may further increase vulnerability. Methods: This prospective cohort study included 113 postpartum women who delivered via emergency caesarean section (73.5%) or operative vaginal delivery (26.5%) in two tertiary hospitals in

Factors Associated with Birth-Related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms and the Subsequent Impact of Traumatic Birth on Mother-Infant Relationship Quality.

This study aimed to investigate factors associated with birth-related PTSD symptoms and the subsequent impact on mother-infant relationship quality, exploring what women felt they needed to be different about their birth process to further understand the problem. Participants were recruited using social media advertising. A multi-method approach, using qualitative and quantitative analyses, was employed. The study included 142 pregnant women residing in Australia aged between 19 and 42 years (M = 31.24; SD = 4.70). High extraversion significantly predicted greater birth-related PTSD symptoms.

Event related potentials indexing the influence of emotion on cognitive processing in veterans with comorbid post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Emotion regulation and cognitive executive control are significantly impaired in both post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). These illnesses are increasingly common in veterans and their co-occurrence may exacerbate symptoms and recovery. The current study sought to investigate neural correlates of these impairments via event-related potentials (ERPs) and examined the association of PTSD symptom severity and impulsivity with these correlates. METHODS: Electroencephalographic data from seventy-nine veterans with PTSD and TBI and 17 control participan

The Effects of Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder on Prison Adjustment and Recidivism among Military Veterans: Evidence from Minnesota.

The prevalence of, and link between, mental health disorders-such as traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-and antisocial behavior is well-documented among the military veteran population. Studies also show that TBI and PTSD account for variation in prison-based and re-entry outcomes. Despite this body of research, comparatively fewer studies have explicitly focused on how these factors affect prison adjustment for inmates with prior military experience. We used administrative data provided by the Minnesota Department of Corrections (MnDOC) and employed a serie

Alterations in the Topology of Functional Connectomes Are Associated with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Blast-Related Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in Combat Veterans.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common condition in post-deployment service members (SM). SMs of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan also frequently experience traumatic brain injury (TBI) and exposure to blasts during deployments. This study evaluated the effect of these conditions and experiences on functional brain connectomes in post-deployment, combat-exposed veterans. Functional brain connectomes were created using 5-min resting-state magnetoencephalography data. Well-established clinical interviews determined current PTSD diagnosis, as well as deployment-acquired mild TBI a

Experiences with traumatic events, consequences and care among people with visual impairment and post-traumatic stress disorder: a qualitative study from The Netherlands.

OBJECTIVE: Having a visual impairment is known to be associated with an increased vulnerability to (potentially) traumatic events. Little is known about how people with visual impairment experience and process such events. This qualitative study aimed to provide more insight into experiences with traumatic events, consequences of traumatic events and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-related care among people with visual impairment and PTSD. METHODS: Eighteen persons with visual impairment and (a history of) PTSD were interviewed. Among them were 14 women and 4 men aged between 23 and 66

Impact of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder on functional outcome and health-related quality of life of patients with mild traumatic brain injury.

The impact of disability following traumatic brain injury (TBI), assessed by functional measurement scales for TBI or by health-related quality of life (HRQoL), may vary because of a number of factors, including presence of depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The aim of this study was to assess prevalence and impact of depression and PTSD on functional outcome and HRQoL six and 12 months following mild TBI. We selected a sample of 1919 TBI patients who presented to the emergency department (ED) followed by either hospital admission or discharge to the home environment. The sam

Incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder after a mild traumatic brain injury: preliminary investigation using the brief neuropsychological screening test.

OBJECTIVE: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a group of diseases that are observed in patients who had experienced a serious trauma or accident. However, some experienced it even after only a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), and they are easily ignored due to the relatively favorable course of mild TBI. Herein, the authors investigated the incidence of PTSD in mild TBI using brief neuropsychological screening test (PTSD checklist, PCL). METHODS: This study was conducted on patients with mild TBI (Glasgow coma scale ≥13) who were admitted from January 2012 to December 2012. As for PCL

Estimation of usefulness of positron emission tomography (PET) in the diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorders--preliminary report.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of using PET both in assessing the susceptibility to stress and in the diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorders. Mentally and somatically healthy soldiers were subjected to PET-CT head scan examinations before and after virtual reality stimulation with warfare scenarios. Despite stimulation of peripheral nervous system after 10 minutes, VR exposure in any of the examined soldiers simulation did not cause changes in any brain structure that was visualized in PET. PET-CT head scan was also performed in patients with typical symptoms of ac

Prior Psychiatric Disorder and Post-Traumatic Stress, Depressive and Anxiety Disorder after Traumatic Brain Injury with Glasgow Coma Scale Score 13-15: A TRACK-TBI Study.

The most consistent risk factor for developing psychiatric problems post-traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a preexisting psychiatric disorder, but many studies have reported that psychiatric disorders can occur de novo following "mild" TBI. The objective of this secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study of patients (n = 1,947) with acute TBI and presenting Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score between 13 and 15 was to describe the association of pre-injury psychiatric history with prevalence and risk factors for probable posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD), and

Post-traumatic stress disorder, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, and 24 gastrointestinal diseases: Evidence from Mendelian randomization analysis.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are common mental illnesses. Observational studies have indicated that these conditions often co-occur with gastrointestinal diseases. However, the causal relationship between PTSD and ADHD with gastrointestinal diseases remain unclear. We conducted Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate these associations. We selected genetic instrument data with genome-wide significance levels for PTSD and ADHD from the psychiatric genomics consortium open genome-wide association study platform. Summar

Investigating the shared genetic architecture of post-traumatic stress disorder and gastrointestinal tract disorders: a genome-wide cross-trait analysis.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies suggest a correlation between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and gastrointestinal tract (GIT) disorders. However, the genetic overlap, causal relationships, and underlining mechanisms between PTSD and GIT disorders were absent. METHODS: We obtained genome-wide association study statistics for PTSD (23 212 cases, 151 447 controls), peptic ulcer disease (PUD; 16 666 cases, 439 661 controls), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD; 54 854 cases, 401 473 controls), PUD and/or GORD and/or medications (PGM; 90 175 cases, 366 152 controls), irritable bowel syn

Childhood maltreatment, dissociation and borderline personality disorder: Preliminary data on the mediational role of mentalizing in complex post-traumatic stress disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Treatments for borderline personality disorder (BPD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are less effective for patients with co-occurring symptoms of both disorders, who are considered to have complex PTSD (cPTSD), compared with patients with either condition alone. Evidence suggests that co-occurrence of symptoms indicates greater impairment in mentalizing. This study examines evidence for targeting mentalizing when treating individuals with co-occurring symptoms, irrespective of their exposure to developmental trauma and, for the first time, investigates the mediational ro

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, and Wildfires: A Fifth-Year Postdisaster Evaluation among Residents of Fort McMurray.

Background: Over 90,000 residents had to be evacuated from Fort McMurray (FMM), Alberta, Canada due to the wildfire that engulfed the city in May 2016. Overall, about 2400 homes or 10% of the housing stock in Fort McMurray were destroyed. The fire consumed about 200,000 hectors of forest, reaching into Saskatchewan. During major disasters, communities’ infrastructure is disrupted, and psychological, economic, and environmental effects are felt for years afterwards. Objective: Five years after the wildfire disaster, this study assessed the prevalence rate of major depressive disorder (MDD) and

Structural brain correlates in major depression, anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder: A voxel-based morphometry meta-analysis.

The high comorbidity of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Anxiety Disorders (ANX), and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has hindered the study of their structural neural correlates. The authors analyzed specific and common grey matter volume (GMV) characteristics by comparing them with healthy controls (HC). The meta-analysis of voxel-based morphometry (VBM) studies showed unique GMV diminutions for each disorder (p < 0.05, corrected) and less robust smaller GMV across diagnostics (p < 0.01, uncorrected). Pairwise comparison between the disorders showed GMV differences in MDD versus ANX and

Mental Health and Personality Functioning of People With Probable Personality Disorder Who Have Coexisting Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

This paper examines the prevalence and comorbidity of complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) among individuals with probable personality disorder, using baseline data from the Structured Psychological Support clinical trial. The clinical characteristics and personality functioning of participants are summarised and compared between those meeting criteria for BPD, CPTSD, both or neither condition. Among 292 participants, 97% reported significant trauma exposure, and over half met the criteria for CPTSD. Those with CPTSD exhibited higher levels o
