Comparing the risk of subsequent ischemic stroke and mortality in patients with epilepsy and patients with ischemic stroke.

Patients with stroke or epilepsy face an elevated risk of subsequent strokes. This nationwide retrospective cohort study analyzed data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (2012-2020) to compare the risk of future ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (IS/TIA) among patients with epilepsy and those with prior IS/TIA. Patients were categorized into four groups: epilepsy with subsequent IS/TIA (E/S), epilepsy without IS/TIA (E), IS/TIA without epilepsy (S), and neither condition (C). Incidence rates and adjusted hazard ratios for IS/TIA and mortality were assessed acr…

A blunt look at stroke risk in BCVI: Do multiple injuries increase the risk of stroke?

INTRODUCTION: Minimal literature correlates stroke rates in blunt cerebrovascular injury (BCVI) to bilaterality, multi-vessel injury, or multifocal injury. We hypothesized that a synchronous cerebrovascular injury and a higher-grade injury would increase stroke rates. METHODS: A single-center retrospective (1/2016-12/2023) review was conducted identifying patients with BCVI. Injury characteristics, clinical features, and demographic data were collected and statistically modeled in relation to stroke risk. RESULTS: Stroke rate in our cohort was 3.7 %. Higher-grade injuries increased the odds…

A longitudinal investigation of the determinants of stroke survivors' utilisation of a healthy lifestyle for stroke rehabilitation in Australia.

This study aimed to determine the longitudinal predictors of lifestyle behaviours among stroke survivors in New South Wales, Australia. This longitudinal study utilised data from the baseline survey (2005-2009) and a sub-study survey (2017) of the 45 and Up Study. Physical activity, alcohol consumption, smoking status, and supplement use were included as dependent variables. Generalised estimating equation models were employed to assess the longitudinal association between the dependent variable and demographic and health status measures. The average age of the participants (n = 576) was 67 (S…

A New Perspective on Stroke Research: Unraveling the Role of Brain Oxygen Dynamics in Stroke Pathophysiology.

Stroke, a leading cause of death and disability, often results from ischemic events that cut off the brain blood flow, leading to neuron death. Despite treatment advancements, survivors frequently endure lasting impairments. A key focus is the ischemic penumbra, the area around the stroke that could potentially recover with prompt oxygenation; yet its monitoring is complex. Recent progress in bioluminescence-based oxygen sensing, particularly through the Green enhanced Nano-lantern (GeNL), offers unprecedented views of oxygen fluctuations in vivo. Utilized in awake mice, GeNL has uncovered hyp…

Relation between index of cardioelectrophysiological balance and stroke severity in patients with acute ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND: The index of cardioelectrophysiological balance (iCEB), measured as QT interval divided by QRS duration, has recently been defined as a new risk marker for arrhythmias. Increased or decreased iCEB is associated with malignant ventricular arrhythmias. AIM: In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between iCEB and stroke severity in patients with acute ischemic stroke. METHODS: The study comprised 105 adult patients (males, 58; females, 47; 69 ± 15 years) with acute ischemic stroke. Nine patients were excluded. Patients were divided into two groups based on the calcu…

Spatial distribution and differences of stroke occurrence in the Rhone department of France (STROKE 69 cohort).

In France, 110,000 patients are admitted to hospital per year for stroke. Even though the relationship between stroke and risk factors such as low socio-economic status is well known, research in the spatial distribution (SD) of stroke as a contributing risk factor is less documented. Understanding the geographic differences of the disease may improve stroke prevention. In this study, a statistical spatial analysis was performed using a French cohort (STROKE 69) to describe spatial inequalities in the occurrence of stroke. STROKE 69 was a cohort study of 3,442 patients, conducted in the Rhône …
