BACKGROUND: Strongyloidiasis, caused by Strongyloides stercoralis (S. stercoralis), is endemic worldwide, especially in countries with warm and humid climates. Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection syndrome (SHS) is an extremely serious manifestation of strongyloidiasis, which results from an acute exacerbation of auto-infection and is often fatal.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of SHS mimicking pseudomembranous enteritis with a final definitive diagnosis of a triple infection including S. stercoralis, Escherchia coli (E. coli) and Pneumocytis jirovecii (P. jirovecii) that occurred i…

Strongyloidiasis is life-threatening disease which is mainly caused by Strongyloides stercoralis infection. Autoinfection of the parasite results in long-lasting infection and fatal conditions, hyperinfection and dissemination (primarily in immunosuppressed hosts). However, mechanisms of autoinfection and biology remain largely unknown. Rodent models including mice and rats are not susceptible to the human isolate of S. stercoralis. Variations in susceptibility of the human isolate of S. stercoralis are found in dogs. S. ratti and S. venezuelensis infections in rats are an alternative model wi…

The nematode Strongyloides stercoralis is responsible for strongyloidiasis in humans. Diagnosis of infection occurs through detection of larvae in feces, but low elimination of larvae often hampers the detection of disease, particularly in cases of patient immunosuppression. Immunodiagnostic tests have been developed; however obtaining S. stercoralis larvae for the production of homologous antigen extract is technically difficult. Thus, the use different developmental forms of Strongyloides venezuelensis has become an alternative method for the production of antigen extracts. The aim of this s…

Description Strongyloides stercoralis is a soil-transmitted helminth that causes strongyloidiasis, a chronic parasitic infection in humans. S. stercoralis is one of several worm species that cause soil-transmitted helminthiasis, a neglected tropical disease. Herein, we discuss a 78-year-old female residing in a nursing home presenting with abdominal pain and shortness of breath. During a thoracentesis, physicians found multiple rhabditoid larvae consistent with S. stercoralis. However, before the procedure, a serial assessment of stool sample was performed and failed to demonstrate a parasitic…

Strongyloidiasis is an infestation caused by the intestinal nematode Strongyloides stercoralis. It is potentially fatal in immunocompromised hosts due to its capacity to cause an overwhelming hyperinfestation however infested healthy individuals are usually asymptomatic. Hyperinfestation is extremely rare in the Central Nervous System (CNS) and usually limited to the gastrointestinal tract or lungs. CNS involvement in strongyloidiasis has only been seen in patients with hyperinfestation syndrome and may be fatal when misdiagnosed. In this report, we describe an unusual case of a 13-year-old gi…

Strongyloidiasis is caused by nematode infections of the genus Strongyloides, mainly Strongyloides stercoralis, and affects tens of millions of people around the world. S. stercoralis hyperinfection and disseminated strongyloidiasis are unusual but potentially fatal conditions mostly due to Gram-negative bacteremia and sepsis, primarily affecting immunocompromised patients. Infections with immunosuppressive viruses such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Human T-cell leucemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) have been reported as risk factors for strongyloidiasis. Hyperinfection syndrome has been …

Immunocompromised patients constitute a risk group for the development of severe clinical forms of human strongyloidiasis. The diagnosis of this infection is primarily performed by parasitological techniques, but with low sensitivity. Serological techniques appear as an alternative, especially with heterologous antigens use. The aim of this study was to perform the Western blot technique by using S. venezuelensis infective third stage larva (iL3) soluble (TS) and membrane (TM) saline antigens to reveal immunoreactive bands in immunocompromised patients with strongyloidiasis. Serum samples from…

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminthiases (STHs) in stray dogs and cats, including hookworm infection, strongyloidiasis, and toxocariasis, are prevalent globally. The lack of STH control in these stray animals leads to an increased prevalence of STHs in southern Thailand. Suddenly, the El Niño 2014-2016 induced a 14-month-long drought. We thus aimed to compare the prevalence of STHs in stray cats in artificial wet sandy soil (unaffected area) and dry sandy soil (affected area) before and after drought. Furthermore, we also observed the prevalence of STHs in stray dogs in another study area be…

PURPOSE: Strongyloidiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by the roundworm Strongyloides stercoralis. The prevalence of strongyloidiasis is higher in tropical and sub-tropical areas, there have been reports of infection in temperate regions. India is an endemic region for strongyloidiasis, however, there is extreme scarcity of molecular data related to S. stercoralis from this region.
METHODOLOGY: A cross sectional study was conducted in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, from July 2023 to January 2025. A total of 800 stool samples from patients were screened based on microscopy and confirmed th…

Strongyloidiasis is a parasitic nematode infection mainly caused by Strongyloides stercoralis. Immunocompromised conditions, particularly cancer patients treated with chemotherapy and corticosteroids, have a significant risk of developing Strongyloides hyperinfection. The lack of a gold standard laboratory method to rule out this infection and the insensitivity of microscopic stool examination due to low and intermittent larvae output in stool contribute to the low detection rate of this infection. We present three cases of strongyloidiasis in adults with haematological malignancies and signif…

Treatment of soil-transmitted nematodes with mebendazole was carried out in 137 children aged 6--15 years in Thailand. There were 100 cases of hookworm infection, 37 of ascariasis, 16 of trichuriasis and 32 of strongyloidiasis. Mebendazole was given at 100 mg twice daily for three consecutive days irrespective of age or weight. The reduction rates as seen by mean egg counts four weeks after treatment were 94.9% for hookworm infection, 100% for ascariasis and 93.9% for trichuriasis; the reduction rates of the mean larval count in 15 cases of strongyloidiasis was 82.1%. No side-effects were obse…

Strongyloides stercoralis is unique among the nematodes, in which it completes its life cycle inside a single human host by causing autoinfection in the host, and it causes hyperinfection leading to persistent and fatal disseminated infections in immunocompromised hosts. The present case report is about strongyloidiasis fatal hyperinfection in a patient with malignant tumor of the tongue on radiotherapy treatment, to highlight the need for clinical suspicion of strongyloidiasis in an immunocompromised host. As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the mortality in strongyloides h…

Recently described enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunoblot methods for the detection of serum IgG against Strongyloides stercoralis larval antigens were prospectively evaluated for the diagnosis of endemic strongyloidiasis. A modification of the ELISA involved preincubation of sera with Onchocerca gutturosa phosphate-buffered saline-soluble extract to remove cross-reactivity with other helminths. The sensitivity of the ELISA increased from 80% to 85% following preincubation. Similarly, there was an increase in specificity from 94% to 97%. The IgG recognition of 41-, 31-, and 2…

A retrospective study was performed of clinical features in expatriates attending the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, London, with a sole diagnosis of ascariasis (100), trichuriasis (100), hookworm (75), and strongyloidiasis (36). Results were compared with a control group of 100 ex-patriates attending the same hospital in whom no diagnosis was made and in whom stool microscopy and peripheral blood eosinophil counts were normal. Almost one half of all patients with intestinal helminthiasis were asymptomatic. Of those with symptoms specific clinical features were no different from controls with…

Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal helminth that infects people worldwide. Hyperinfection or disseminated human strongyloidiasis can involve vital organs, leading to lethal outcomes. We analyzed immunoproteomics of antigenic spots, derived from S. stercoralis third-stage larvae and reacted with human strongyloidiasis sera, by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting. Of 26 excised antigenic spots analyzed by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry, 20 proteins were identified. Most proteins were associated with enzymes involved in the metabo…

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis can undergo an alternative autoinfective life cycle in the host, which, in some individuals can lead to a lethal infection. However, due to a number of factors, such as, the majority of those infected are from low-income backgrounds and the limitation in experimental models for studying human S. stercoralis, strongyloidiasis remains neglected. Improved knowledge of animal models that are susceptible to this parasite is needed in order to investigate the immunological mechanisms involved during infection and in particular to further understand the natural h…
