A qualitative study of therapeutic effect from a user's perspective.

UNLABELLED: This study investigated the experiences of adults who have completed a course of therapy for stammering. The objective was to inform clinicians about the effect of therapy by listening to the client's own account of the experience after they had been discharged from therapy. The study involved individuals discussing their experiences and their views on the effect of therapy in an in-depth, semi-structured interview. The individual transcripts were subjected to analyses and several major themes emerged. A number of the themes had implications for clinical practice and these were con

Visualization of Internal Working Models Through Transactional Analysis (TA) Developmental Collage Therapy: A Case Report.

Bowlby's Internal Working Model (IWM) is central to understanding adult attachment-related difficulties. However, what IWM concretely consists of remains unspecified, and no method exists for directly visualizing IWM. Because IWM is formed during the pre-verbal period, it is difficult to access through language-based psychotherapy alone. A woman in her 20s with a history of childhood stuttering and subsequent interpersonal difficulties participated in Transactional Analysis (TA) Developmental Collage Therapy. She created six collage works representing "myself and my surrounding environment" ac

Lithium-associated movement disorder: A literature review.

In 1949, Cade described "sedative effects" after injecting guinea pigs intraperitoneally with lithium (LTM) carbonate. Based on his experiments, he began treating psychiatric patients with LTM. This literature review aims to evaluate the clinical epidemiological profile, pathological mechanisms, and management of LTM-associated movement disorder (MD). Relevant reports in six databases (Excerpta Medica, Google Scholar, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature, Medline, Scientific Electronic Library Online, and ScienceDirect) were identified and assessed by two reviewers without l

Hidden Communication Needs in Higher Education: A Scoping Review of Developmental Communication Disorders, Mental Health, and Academic Participation.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Higher education requires students to communicate in complex academic and social contexts, including oral presentations, group work, help-seeking, assessment, and peer interaction. For students with developmental communication disorders, and communication-related developmental profiles, these demands may create hidden participation vulnerabilities that affect mental health, academic engagement, and belonging. This scoping review mapped empirical evidence among tertiary students, focusing on mental health, academic participation, social belonging, institutional support, a

Clinical Profile of Neurodevelopmental Disorders in Children at a Tertiary Care Center.

Background Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) encompass intricate interactions among genetic, brain, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral processes. These disorders, which are influenced by hereditary and environmental factors, impair personal, social, intellectual, or occupational functioning. Typically emerging early in life, NDDs include conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), vision and hearing impairments, motor disorders, and specific learning disabilities. Children from impoverished and low-income ne

Diagnostic Tips from a Video Series and Literature Review of Patients with Late-Onset Tay-Sachs Disease.

BACKGROUND: Late-Onset Tay-Sachs (LOTS) disease is a rare, progressive neurological condition that can dramatically affect the life of these patients. The diagnosis of LOTS is easily missed because of the multifaced presentation of these patients, who can initially be assessed by neuromuscular or movement disorder specialists, or psychiatrists. Clinical trials are now becoming available for LOTS. Therefore, early diagnosis can be detrimental for these patients and for insuring informative research outcomes. METHODS: We characterized a cohort of nine patients with LOTS through a detailed clini

Evaluating the empirical support for the Geschwind-Behan-Galaburda model of cerebral lateralization.

The Geschwind-Behan-Galaburda (GBG) model of cerebral lateralization provides a complex but testable theory of the origins and associates of cerebral lateralization. An overall evaluation of the model suggest that it is not well supported by empirical evidence and that in the case of several key theoretical areas, the evidence that does exist is inconsistent with the theory. In particular: the concept of "anomalous dominance" is shown to be theoretically and methodologically flawed; a meta-analysis of the relationship between handedness and immune disorders finds a marginal overall association

Speech and Deep Brain Stimulation in Parkinson's Disease, Essential Tremor, and Dystonia: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) effectively treats motor symptoms in movement disorders but often compromises speech through incompletely defined mechanisms. We conducted a PROSPERO-registered systematic review and meta-analysis of publications through August 2024 (CRD42024527738). Among 2726 screened records, we included 184 studies: 131 in Parkinson's disease (PD), 32 in essential tremor (ET), and 21 in dystonia, assessing perceptual, acoustic, and patient-reported speech outcomes. Meta-analyses showed that subthalamic nucleus DBS in PD resulted in poorer speech intelligibility compared with be
