African swine fever (ASF) reemerged in free-ranging wild boar in Catalonia, northeastern Spain, in November 2025, representing the first detection in Spain since 1994. We described the initial outbreak phase using surveillance data collected from 25 November 2025 to 23 February 2026. ASF virus (ASFV) positivity by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was estimated overall and by surveillance stream; mortality timing was reconstructed probabilistically from estimated death-date intervals; and early front displacement was analyzed using leading-edge cumulative minimum convex p

Domestic pigs constitute a significant global livestock resource and are increasingly recognized as valuable biomedical models, enabling fundamental research. In contrast, immunological studies on wild boar remain limited. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a comparative analysis of baseline immune phenotypes in age-matched cohorts of domestic pigs and wild boar. Additionally, we adapted a staining and flow cytometry gating strategy based on human immunophenotyping protocols to define conventional memory T cell subsets in both species, validating this approach through proliferation as

Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (APP) causes porcine contagious pleuropneumonia (PCP), a highly contagious respiratory disease that inflicts substantial economic losses to the global swine industry. Given the high serotypic diversity of APP and limited cross-protective efficacy of current vaccines, novel candidates are urgently needed. In contrast to commercial APP vaccines relying on formalin-inactivated native Apx toxoids, and to experimental antigens that frequently use truncated Apx fragments or proteins refolded from insoluble inclusion bodies, this study successfully expressed full-lengt

Growing concerns over antibiotic resistance have led to restrictions on antimicrobial use in various regions, including the European Union, prompting the search for alternative strategies to promote gut health. Of these, postbiotics have emerged as a promising strategy due to their potential immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and gut barrier-enhancing properties. Despite extensive research regarding human health, the application of postbiotics in swine nutrition remains unexplored, with limited and inconclusive findings. The definition of postbiotics has evolved, leading to inconsistencies i

Wild boar (Sus scrofa) is a widespread invasive species in Poland and may act as a reservoir for various pathogens, including those associated with the porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC). As data on bacterial respiratory pathogens in wild boar populations, particularly co-infections, in Poland and other European countries remain limited, the main goal of our study was to examine the frequency of selected bacterial respiratory agents and their co-occurrence in lung samples collected from culled wild boars during hunting. Two hundred and fifty-three lung samples were analysed for the pre…

The high mortality rate of suckling piglets in commercial farms is a cause for concern and requires the adoption of innovative breeding and management approaches for effective mitigation. Piglets are particularly vulnerable during the first days of life, which concerns especially neonates with a low birth weight. In this study, neonatal adaptation was analysed regarding genotype and housing conditions following hormonally induced farrowing. A total of 96 piglets from 27 farrowings of German Landrace (GL; birth induction at day 115 of gestation) and German Saddleback sows (GS; birth induction a

Aujeszky's disease, or pseudorabies, is a viral infection caused by Suid herpesvirus 1 (pseudorabies virus), with swine as its natural host. Although eradicated in domestic pigs in many European countries, PRV remains endemic in wild boar populations, posing a risk to other species, including carnivores. In this study, we report eight fatal cases of PRV infection in hunting dogs from Epirus and Thessaly, Greece, all of which followed direct contact with hunted wild boars. Postmortem brain samples tested positive for PRV via PCR targeting the glycoprotein C (gC) gene. Partial sequencing and phy

Wild boars or feral pigs are classified by the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Resources (IBAMA) in "Category I of invasive exotic species". They cause economic losses, harm the environment, serve as hosts and reservoirs for several zoonotic disease agents, and provide a blood meal for tick species that act as vectors for zoonotic diseases. The objective of this study was to identify tick species on wild boars, assess host-seeking ticks in the related environment, and identify other potential tick hosts coexisting with wild boars on a farm located in the state of Minas Ge

INTRODUCTION: Stents with anti-reflux properties have been previously described in various studies but not widely adopted. We designed, constructed and tested a novel umbrella-looking anti-reflux skirt on a double J stent at the level of the ureteral orifice in a previous ex-vivo study. This study serves as a proof of concept of testing this prototype in a porcine model.
METHODS: 3 Yorkshire-Landrace pigs were put under general anaesthesia. Conventional bilateral retrograde stenting with white-colored double-J stents were performed. Deployment of anti-reflux skirt was performed unilaterally.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a global health problem, causing an estimated 20 million infections annually. Thus, the management of HEV requires special consideration. In developed countries, hepatitis E is mainly recognized as a foodborne disease (mainly transmitted via undercooked meat consumption) that is generally caused by genotype 3 and 4 circulating in various animals, including pigs and wild boars. The current absence of officially recognized protocols for the analysis of HEV in foods and the lack of awareness of this disease among healthcare workers, together with the high percentage of

African swine fever virus (ASFV) is a substantial threat to pig populations worldwide, contributing to economic disruption and food security challenges. Its spread is attributed to the oronasal transmission route, particularly in animals with acute ASF. Our study addresses the understudied role of nasal mucosa in ASFV infection, using a nasal explant model. The explants remained viable and revealed a discernible ASFV infection in nasal septum and turbinates post-inoculation. Interestingly, more infected cells were found in the turbinates despite its thinner structure. Further analyses showed (

BACKGROUND: Chinese indigenous pigs in Yunnan exhibit considerable phenotypic diversity, but their population structure and the biological interpretation of signatures of artificial selection require further investigation. To uncover population genetic diversity, migration events, and artificial selection signatures in Chinese domestic pigs, we sampled 111 Yunnan pigs from four breeds in Yunnan which is considered to be one of the centres of livestock domestication in China, and genotyped them using Illumina Porcine SNP60K BeadChip. We then leveraged multiple bioinformatics database tools to f

AIMS: A cross-sectional study was carried out to assess the seroprevalence and risk factors associated with Trichinella spp. exposure in wild boar and Iberian domestic pigs from Mediterranean ecosystems of southwestern Spain.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Serum samples from 1360 wild boar and 439 Iberian domestic pigs were obtained during 2015-2020, from regions where Iberian pigs are raised under extensive conditions, hence sharing habitat with wild boar. Seropositivity was found in 7.4% (100/1360; 95% CI: 6.1-8.9) of the wild boar analysed. In this species, the individual seroprevalence ranged from

African swine fever (ASF) leads to high mortality in domestic pigs and wild boar, and it is caused by the African swine fever virus (ASFV). Currently, no commercially available vaccine exists for its prevention in China. In this study, we engineered a pseudorabies recombinant virus (PRV) expressing ASFV CD2v and p54 proteins (PRV-∆TK-(CD2v)-∆gE-(p54)) using CRISPR/Cas9 and homologous recombination technology. PRV-∆TK-(CD2v)-∆gE-(p54) effectively delivers CD2v and p54, and it exhibits reduced virulence. Immunization with PRV-∆TK-(CD2v)-∆gE-(p54) neither induces pruritus nor causes systemic infe

Porcine embryonic loss during early gestation is a serious problem in swine production. Improving embryonic survival can be achieved by maternal manipulation. Protein and energy are two major components of the diet, which play decisive roles in embryonic survival. This study was performed to evaluate the effects of enhancing maternal protein or energy intake on embryonic survival during early gestation in gilts and to explore the underlying mechanism. From day (d) 0 to 30 of gestation, 40 gilts (Landrace × York) were randomly allocated to 5 diets according to daily intake of low (L, National R

Heat stress (HS) deleteriously affects multiple components of porcine reproduction and is causal to seasonal infertility. Environment-induced hyperthermia causes a HS response (HSR) typically characterized by increased abundance of intracellular heat shock proteins (HSP). Gilts exposed to HS during the peri-implantation period have compromised embryo survival, however if (or how) HS disrupts the porcine endometrium is not understood. Study objectives were to evaluate the endometrial HSP abundance in response to HS during this period and assess the effect of oral progestin (altrenogest; ALT) su

African swine fever remains one of the most economically important and dangerous diseases of the Suidae family. Until now, neither a safe vaccine nor a treatment against ASF has been available, which is why prevention of the disease involves biosecurity measures and early recognition based on accurate diagnosis. Nowadays, different strategies for ASF detection are discussed to reduce both animal suffering and the costs of ASF surveillance. This article aims to indicate the risk, with regard to non-invasive sampling, for the detection of ASFV. In this study, we analyzed data from three independ

Toxoplasmosis is a worldwide parasitic zoonosis caused by Toxoplasma gondii. Pigs can become infected by consuming water or food contaminated with sporulated oocysts, or by carnivorism (like the consumption of infected rodents). In pigs most infections are asymptomatic. In certain countries, pig meat containing tissue cysts is a major source of infection for human beings. The aims of this study were to estimate the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis and to identify which factors were related with the increase of the risk of infection in Argentina. The seroprevalence of T. gondii was determined in

The recent centennial anniversary of R.E. Montgomery's seminal published description of "a form of swine fever" disease transmitted from wild African pigs to European domestic pigs is a call to action to accelerate African Swine Fever (ASF) vaccine research and development. ASF modified live virus (MLV) first-generation gene deleted vaccine candidates currently offer the most promise to meet international and national guidelines and regulatory requirements for veterinary product licensure and market authorization. A major, rate-limiting impediment to the acceleration of current as well as futu
