Quantitative Evaluation of Caries and Calculus with Ultrahigh-Resolution Optical Coherence Tomography.

Dental caries on the crown's surface is caused by the interaction of bacteria and carbohydrates, which then gradually alter the tooth's structure. In addition, calculus is the root of periodontal disease. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been considered to be a promising tool for identifying dental caries; however, diagnosing dental caries in the early stage still remains challenging. In this study, we proposed an ultrahigh-resolution OCT (UHR-OCT) system with axial and transverse resolutions of 2.6 and 1.8 μm for differentiating the early-stage dental caries and calculus. The same teeth

A two-stage framework for optical coherence tomography angiography image quality improvement.

INTRODUCTION: Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) is a new non-invasive imaging modality that gains increasing popularity for the observation of the microvasculatures in the retina and the conjunctiva, assisting clinical diagnosis and treatment planning. However, poor imaging quality, such as stripe artifacts and low contrast, is common in the acquired OCTA and in particular Anterior Segment OCTA (AS-OCTA) due to eye microtremor and poor illumination conditions. These issues lead to incomplete vasculature maps that in turn makes it hard to make accurate interpretation and subsequen

Image-Guided Optical Coherence Tomography to Assess Structural Changes in Rodent Retinas.

Ocular diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, and uveitis, are always accompanied by retinal structural changes. These diseases affecting the fundus always exhibit typical abnormalities in certain cell types in the retina, including photoreceptor cells, retinal ganglion cells, cells in the retinal blood vessels, and cells in the choroidal vascular cells. Noninvasive, highly efficient, and adaptable imaging techniques are required for both clinical practice and basic research. Image-guided optical coherence tomography (OCT) satisfies these requiremen

Ex-vivo analysis of demineralisation on irradiated teeth using optical coherence tomography.

Head and neck cancer patients are prone to dental caries after radiotherapy. An ex-vivo study was conducted to assess the feasibility of optical coherence tomography (OCT) to detect tooth demineralization due to caries in irradiated teeth. Thirty-nine human molar teeth were subjected to caries lesion induction through irradiation (Group 1), pH cycling (Group 2-1), and both (Group 2-2). The OCT signal attenuation coefficient, µR was assessed and validated against microhardness test and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The µR for Group 1 increased from 10 Gy to 40 Gy, and subsequently decreas
