The toxicity of CdTe QDs modified with three different ligands, namely mercaptopropionic acid (MPA), N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), and glutathione (GSH), were investigated via microcalorimetric, spectroscopic, and microscopic methods. The three ligand-modified QDs have nearly identical hydrodynamic size. The results of the calorimetric experiments and optical density measurements indicate that the QDs inhibited the growth of Gram-negative Escherichia coli. Butenolide [5-octylfuran-2(5H)-one] is a recently discovered and very promising anti-marine-fouling compound. In this study, the acute toxicity of butenolide was assessed in several non-target organisms, including micro algae, crustaceans, and fish. Spontaneous salivary gland tumors in rats are rare. The authors report a poorly differentiated carcinoma of a submandibular gland in a ten-week-old rat that was positive for vimentin. Microscopically, the neoplastic cells showed a diffuse growth pattern in most areas of the tumor mass and a nestlike structure in a part of the peripheral area. Carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)), a water disinfection by-product, at low environmentally relevant concentrations exerts adverse effects on mammals. The unicellular microalga Dunaliella salina possessing a remarkable degree of environmental adaptation was selected as test organism to investigate low-level exposure to CCl(4). This paper presents the toxicity data of 10 nonpolar narcotic chemicals on Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (green algae) assessed by a new algal toxicity testing technique conducted under air-tight environment. Based on DO production, median effective concentration (EC50) varies from 1.73 mg/L (1-octanol) to 8,040 mg/L (2-propanol). A recombinant lactase was expressed in Pichia pastoris, resulting in enzymatic activity of 3600 U/mL in a 5 L fermenter.
