Approach to Hypertension in Adolescents and Young Adults.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The prevalence of hypertension in adolescents and young adults has increased in part due to the obesity epidemic. The clinical impact and future cardiovascular risk of this underestimated public health problem is an evolving field. RECENT FINDINGS: The development of hypertension is predicted by tracking of elevated blood pressure from childhood to adulthood. Young hypertensive individuals have lower awareness, slower diagnosis rates, and poorer blood pressure control than older patients. Increased awareness, appropriate screening, early identification, and individualized t

Driving Behavior Analysis of City Buses Based on Real-Time GNSS Traces and Road Information.

The driving behavior of bus drivers is related to the safety of all passengers and regulation of urban traffic. In order to analyze the relevant characteristics of speed and acceleration, accurate bus trajectories and patterns are essential for driver behavior analysis and development of effective intelligent public transportation. Exploiting real-time vehicle tracking, this paper develops a platform with vehicle-mounted terminals using differential global navigation satellite system (DGNSS) modules for driver behavior analysis. The DGNSS traces were used to derive the vehicle trajectories, wh

Digitalized Human Organoid for Wireless Phenotyping.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a cost-effective and durable method to trace and track individual objects in multiple contexts by wirelessly providing digital signals; RFID is thus widely used in many fields. Here, we implement this concept to biological tissues by producing a compact RFID chip-incorporated organoid (RiO). The 0.4 mm RFID chips are reproducibly integrated inside the self-assembling organoids from 10 different induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines from healthy and diseased donors. We use the digitalized RiO to conduct a phenotypic screen on a pool of RiO, followed

Pleomorphic adenomas of the major salivary glands: a study of the capsular form in relation to surgical management.

This was a retrospective study of 126 primary pleomorphic adenomas to correlate capsular characteristics with tumour histopathology in relation to current surgical debate (parotidectomy versus local excision). Capsular thickness was measured by micrometry and tumours classified into subtypes (1-4). Evidence of fine needle aspiration damage (needle tracks, infarction) was sought. Minimal changes were seen in eight tumours. Tumour growth features (bosselations, enveloping) were present in 57% and 33%, respectively, also microinvasion (42%) and tumour 'buds' (12%). Parotid lesions possessed thick

Volumetric transformation of brain anatomy.

This paper presents diffeomorphic transformations of three-dimensional (3-D) anatomical image data of the macaque occipital lobe and whole brain cryosection imagery and of deep brain structures in human brains as imaged via magnetic resonance imagery. These transformations are generated in a hierarchical manner, accommodating both global and local anatomical detail. The initial low-dimensional registration is accomplished by constraining the transformation to be in a low-dimensional basis. The basis is defined by the Green's function of the elasticity operator placed at predefined locations in

Perception of apparent motion of colored stimuli after commissurotomy.

One subject with complete forebrain commissurotomy (L.B.), another with posterior callosotomy (D.K.), and eight normal controls were presented with successive pairs of red and/or green lights, on either side of the retinal midline and within the left and right visual fields. All of the subjects could discriminate the direction of apparent motion in all three locations, although L.B. was poorer on bilateral than unilateral presentations. Moreover, on bilateral presentations, L.B. was significantly poorer at identifying the color of the first light than the color of the second light. In contrast

Modulation of Single-Molecule Emission at Hexagonal Boron Nitride Surfaces.

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is gaining increasing attention in the field of biomolecule characterization due to its compatibility with single-molecule fluorescence imaging and real-time tracking. Embedding fluorescent molecules within hBN layers offers potential for molecular-resolution sensing devices, since these probes are highly sensitive to their surroundings. Yet, the effect of hBN surfaces on the fluorophore properties remains largely unexplored. Here, we monitor the photophysical properties of ATTO647N-ssDNA on hBN surfaces and elucidate the effects of the environment and substrate.

Single-Sided NMR for Real-Time Tracking of Porous Structure Formation of Acrylate Copolymer Waterproof Composites during Erosion.

The failure mechanism of acrylate copolymer waterproof composite films under sulfuric acid treatment is elucidated by time- and depth-resolved low-field single-sided nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The high depth sensitivity (10 μm) and large detection region (14 × 14 mm2) of single-sided NMR enable in situ tracking of porous structure formation under aqueous conditions. Both the pore size and interior surface wettability can be obtained through the proper selection of probe molecules, that is, water and ethanol, with different molecular sizes and surface tensions. A two-step erosion process

Harnessing aggregation-induced emission-active fluorescent probes to illuminate intracellular metal ions.

Metal ions are indispensable components in numerous physiological processes, and their homeostatic imbalance can lead to serious pathological disorders. Therefore, achieving accurate tracking and real-time monitoring of these ions within living systems is crucial for biological research and clinical diagnostics. Aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens), which exhibit enhanced fluorescence in the aggregated state due to the restriction of intramolecular motions, have become promising tools for metal ion sensing offering superior photostability, high signal-to-noise ratio, and excellent

Context-dependent effects of carbon dioxide on cross-modal integration during mosquito flight.

To navigate the environment and search for hosts, mosquitoes utilize multiple sensory cues including carbon dioxide (CO₂), visual, olfactory, and humidity cues. However, how mosquitoes shape their behavior by integrating these cues is poorly understood. Here we monitored the flight maneuvers of Aedes albopictus in a virtual reality environment where sensory cues were presented in open- or closed-loop. We found that CO₂ enhances optomotor responses to wide-field motion stimuli provided with various angular speeds and contrasts. Furthermore, CO₂ allowed more accurate tracking of a low contrast,

Brain targeting for focused ultrasound essential tremor ablation: proceedings from the 2023 Focused Ultrasound Foundation workshop.

Essential tremor (ET) is the most common movement disorder globally and has negative impacts on quality of life. While medical treatments exist, approximately 50% of patients have tremor that is refractory to medication or experience intolerable medication side effects. Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) thalamotomy is an option for these patients and while incisionless, it is still invasive, although less so than other surgical treatments such as deep brain stimulation and radiofrequency thalamotomy. Despite MRgFUS being FDA-approved since 2016, there is still no current co

Emotion Dynamics and Emotion Regulation in Anorexia Nervosa: A Systematic Review of Ecological Momentary Assessment Studies.

Altered emotion dynamics and emotion regulation (ER) have been indicated in theoretical descriptions of abnormal emotional functioning, which contributes to the development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN). Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) has recently become popular in research on eating disorders. It is a source of new insights into the psychopathology of AN as it enables intensive long-term tracking of everyday experiences and behaviours of individuals through repeated self-reports. The following systematic review aims to synthesize research on the use of EMA when evaluating em

Top-down control of visual cortex by the frontal eye fields through oscillatory realignment.

Voluntary allocation of visual attention is controlled by top-down signals generated within the Frontal Eye Fields (FEFs) that can change the excitability of lower-level visual areas. However, the mechanism through which this control is achieved remains elusive. Here, we emulated the generation of an attentional signal using single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation to activate the FEFs and tracked its consequences over the visual cortex. First, we documented changes to brain oscillations using electroencephalography and found evidence for a phase reset over occipital sites at beta freque
