Exhalation-responsive optoelectronic clip: switchable non-contact wearable sensor enabled by nanocellulose-partially-encapsulated optical microfibers.

Tactile sensors, widely used in human-machine interactions, face limitations for individuals with mobility impairment or in touch-free scenarios. Humidity sensors, as non-contact alternatives, struggle with environmental interference and complex signal processing. To overcome these challenges, we developed an exhalation-triggered clip with a switchable humidity sensor enabled by a cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) partially-encapsulated optical microfiber (OMF). Thanks to the coffee-ring effect, CNC forms a wrinkle film on both sides of the OMF, leading to strong light scattering. The densely packed

Biosensors for the detection of celiac disease.

Celiac disease (CeD) is an autoimmune disorder triggered by sensitivity to gluten, a protein complex found in wheat, barley, and rye. Gliadins, a component of gluten, are proteins that trigger an immune response in individuals with CeD, primarily affecting the small intestine's inner lining. Despite a 1-1.5% prevalence, only 24% of cases are diagnosed due to non-specific symptoms. Screening is advised for high-risk groups, including first-degree relatives and type 1 diabetes patients. The accurate diagnosis of this condition and the assessment of the patient's response to the current treatment

Metamizole-Induced Type I Kounis Syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Kounis syndrome (KS) is defined as acute coronary syndrome (ACS) triggered by mast cell and platelet activation in the setting of allergic or anaphylactic insults. KS is a unique and complex cause of ACS and many cases may be missed due to its highly variable clinical manifestations. In this report, we present a case of KS type I triggered by metamizole in the absence of a previous history of allergy to this drug. Following the administration of metamizole, the patient developed generalized acute urticaria, chest pain and diaphoresis. Electrocardiography (ECG) showed ST-segment ele

Dysregulation of the epithelial barrier by environmental and other exogenous factors.

The "epithelial barrier hypothesis" proposes that the exposure to various epithelial barrier-damaging agents linked to industrialization and urbanization underlies the increase in allergic diseases. The epithelial barrier constitutes the first line of physical, chemical, and immunological defense against environmental factors. Recent reports have shown that industrial products disrupt the epithelial barriers. Innate and adaptive immune responses play an important role in epithelial barrier damage. In addition, recent studies suggest that epithelial barrier dysfunction plays an essential role i

Temporal Dynamics on Decoding Target Stimuli in Rapid Serial Visual Presentation using Magnetoencephalography.

Rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) is a high efficient paradigm in brain-computer interface (BCI). Target detection accuracy is the first consideration of RSVP-BCI. But the influence of different frequency bands and time ranges on decoding accuracy are still an open questions. Moreover, the underlying neural dynamic of the rapid target detecting process is still unclear. Methods: This work focused the temporal dynamic of the responses triggered by target stimuli in a static RSVP paradigm using paired structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals with

Temporomandibular disorders in scuba divers-an increased risk during diving certification training.

The design of a diving regulator's mouthpiece increases the risk of a temporomandibular disorder (TMD) in scuba divers. The total weight of a diving regulator is reflected directly on the temporomandibular joint, causing articular and periarticular disorders. In the current study, the prevalence of TMD in scuba divers triggered during diving certification training is investigated. We also aimed to determine the factors that lead to TMD during diving training and clarify the observation that there is an increased incidence of TMD in inexperienced divers. The study was held between 2006 and 2011

Toward a Theory of Proactive Health-Oriented Livestock Production: A Testable Conceptual Framework for Alpine Pastoral Systems.

Livestock production must reconcile animal health, food safety, ecological limits, and farm viability. This narrative review proposes proactive health-oriented livestock production (PHLP) as a testable conceptual framework for alpine pastoral systems and as a step toward theory development, rather than as an already validated general theory. PHLP does not claim novelty for vaccination, nutrition, welfare, biosecurity, precision monitoring, or low-carbon practices considered separately. Its proposed contribution is a decision architecture that forecasts context- and stage-specific risk, detects

Painful gastric glitch: an acute epigastric pain triggered by specific food as a new phenotype of postprandial epigastric pain syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Postprandial epigastric pain syndrome was recently suggested as a disorder of gut-brain interaction. We assessed gastroduodenal motility and histology in patients with acute epigastric pain triggered by specific foods. METHODS: In this case-control, exploratory study, patients with epigastric pain and matched controls underwent upper endoscopy to exclude organic disease and gastroduodenal biopsies for histology. All participants underwent a dynamic gastroduodenal MRI, with a baseline acquisition followed by a food-trigger intake and three MRI acquisitions at 15-minute inte

Conceptualisation and design of a protocol for a novel social drivers and primary care screening tool in paediatric orthopaedics: a quality improvement initiative.

INTRODUCTION: Paediatric patients with elevated healthcare needs have limited access to care, contributing to insufficient preventive services. Social drivers of health (SDOH), such as inadequate nutrition and poor community support, contribute substantially to paediatric health. In order to promote value-based healthcare, specialty providers like orthopaedic surgeons can serve as an entry point to connect patients to SDOH and primary care resources. The purpose of this short report is to provide a framework for other institutions for an ongoing screening programme. OVERVIEW OF PROGRAMME: Inf

Individualized management of genetic diversity in Niemann-Pick C1 through modulation of the Hsp70 chaperone system.

Genetic diversity provides a rich repository for understanding the role of proteostasis in the management of the protein fold in human biology. Failure in proteostasis can trigger multiple disease states, affecting both human health and lifespan. Niemann-Pick C1 (NPC1) disease is a rare genetic disorder triggered by mutations in NPC1, a multi-spanning transmembrane protein that is trafficked through the exocytic pathway to late endosomes (LE) and lysosomes (Ly) (LE/Ly) to globally manage cholesterol homeostasis. Defects triggered by >300 NPC1 variants found in the human population inhibit expo

Methods of testing urethral resistance in the female rat.

Development of an animal model of stress urinary incontinence is dependent on a measure of urethral resistance, such as leak point pressure (LPP). However, animals will not cough or perform Valsalva maneuvers upon request. The aim of this study was to use urodynamics to compare bladder pressures during spontaneous voids (SV), anesthetized LPP measurement, and induced sneezing in female rats. A suprapubic catheter was implanted in the bladder dome of 10 female rats. Two days later, the rats were tested urodynamically under urethane anesthesia. The bladder was emptied and filled with saline. The

Onset of a declining trend in fatal motor vehicle crashes involving drunk-driving in Japan.

BACKGROUND: In Japan, introduction of severe drunk-driving penalties and a lower blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit in June 2002 was followed by a substantial reduction in fatal alcohol-related crashes. However, previous research suggests that this reduction started before the legal amendments. The causes of the decrease have not been studied in detail. METHODS: Monthly police data on fatal road traffic crashes from January 1995 to August 2006 were analyzed using a joinpoint regression model to identify change-points in the trends of the proportion of drunk-driving among drivers primaril

Catastrophe mechanism and early warning indicators of seepage erosion-induced water inrush in karst cavities.

Seepage-erosion-induced water inrush in karst cavities is a typical form of water-inrush disaster in karst tunnels. It is governed not only by the spatial distribution of karst cavities and hydraulic recharge conditions, but also by the particle-size gradation and composition of the cavity fill. During seepage erosion, fill particles are progressively transported by flowing water, which may trigger a sudden water-inrush catastrophe. To reveal the catastrophe mechanism and establish early-warning indicators, this study employs the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method to simulate the evo

Effects of water viscosity and tongue ingestion site on tongue pressure during food bolus propulsion.

The purpose of this study was to help provide data to help to implement effective rehabilitation following surgery for oral cancer by comparing tongue pressure production for water and thickened water from the anterior and posterior parts of the tongue during swallowing. Ten healthy volunteers (7 men, 3 women; age 27.6 ± 1.5 years) participated in the experiments. Tongue pressure during 3 mL water and 3 mL thickened water at the anterior and posterior tongue during swallowing was measured using a sensor sheet system with five measuring points on the hard palate. The sequential order of the poi

Operant behavior can be triggered by the position of the rat relative to objects rotating on an inaccessible platform.

The present study describes a task testing the ability of rats to trigger operant behavior by their relative spatial position to inaccessible rotating objects. Rats were placed in a Skinner box with a transparent front wall through which they could observe one or two adjacent objects fixed on a slowly rotating arena (d = 1 m) surrounded by an immobile black cylinder. The direction of arena rotation was alternated at a sequence of different time intervals. Rats were reinforced for the first bar-press that was emitted when a radius separating the two adjacent objects or dividing a single object

Piriform cortex is an ictogenic trigger zone in the primate brain.

OBJECTIVE: Area tempestas, a functionally defined region in the anterior piriform cortex, was identified as a crucial ictogenic trigger zone in the rat brain in the 1980s. However, whether the primate piriform cortex can trigger seizures remains unknown. Here, in a nonhuman primate model, we aimed to localize a similar trigger zone in the piriform cortex and, subsequently, evaluated the ability of focal inhibition of the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNpr) to suppress the evoked seizures. METHODS: Focal microinjection of the γ-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) antagonist bicuculline methio

Clinical Case Study: Pediatric Exercise-Induced Laryngeal Obstruction.

CLINICAL SCENARIO: Exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO) consists of exertion-induced laryngeal adduction that constricts the airway and causes dyspnea. Respiratory retraining (i.e., therapy) with a speech-language pathologist (SLP) is the primary treatment for EILO, yet there is limited work describing typical treatment course in adolescents. CLINICAL QUESTION: What are some clinical procedures and considerations for treating EILO in an adolescent? STUDY SOURCES: This study describes a clinical case of EILO in a 13-year-old female. Case history, self-reported outcomes, and laryngeal

Prognostic Impact of Aetiology in Adult Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis: Insights from an Intensive Care Unit Experience.

BACKGROUND: Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare, life-threatening hyperinflammatory syndrome marked by excessive immune activation. It can be triggered by various factors, including infections, malignancies, and autoimmune diseases, making the diagnosis challenging due to its overlap with other severe conditions. CASE REPORTS: We discuss two intensive care unit (ICU) cases illustrating the diverse manifestations of HLH and the critical importance of early recognition and treatment. The first case involves natural killer-cell leukaemia, and the second, a suspected viral trigger.
