Pulmonary tuberculosis caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) was diagnosed in a 6-year-old female rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) presented with a three-month history of intermittent coughing, dyspnea, weight loss, and inappetence. Hematological evaluation revealed moderate regenerative anemia and neutrophilic leukocytosis, while the thoracic radiography demonstrated a diffuse nodular interstitial pulmonary pattern consistent with tuberculosis. The diagnosis was confirmed by IS6110-targeted PCR. This case underscores the utility of combining radiographic and molecular diagnost

BACKGROUND: Recent advances in digital and wearable technologies with artificial intelligence (AI) enable the use of continuous cough monitoring (CCM) to objectively monitor symptoms as surrogate markers of treatment efficacy in pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). The objectives of this study were to describe the evolution of cough during PTB treatment in adults and to assess the feasibility of community-based CCM.
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled PTB adult participants upon treatment initiation. Participants' coughs were continuously monitored during 6 months with a smartphone loaded with an app

Chylothorax, characterised by the accumulation of chyle in the pleural space, is a rare yet clinically significant condition. This lymphatic fluid, rich in fats absorbed from the intestine, can be caused by various factors including trauma, malignancy, and tuberculosis (TB). Traumatic causes, particularly iatrogenic procedures, account for a significant proportion of cases, followed by rare etiologies like malignancies such as lymphoma, and less commonly, tuberculosis. In the first two cases, the patient was diagnosed with tuberculosis during evaluation for chylothorax; however, in the third c

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is one of the most serious infectious diseases worldwide and poses a great threat to people's health. China has a vast territory with substantial regional disparities in the PTB disease burden. However, there have been no studies conducted to evaluate the PTB disease burden in Shenyang. The aim was to elucidate the magnitude, composition, and distribution of PTB disease burden in Shenyang.
METHODS: The disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) calculated based on Global Burden of Disease (GBD) framework was used to assess the disease burden of PTB in Shen

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is one of the most common infectious diseases prevalent in developing countries and can cause life-threatening haemoptysis. The primary sources of haemoptysis in pulmonary TB are the bronchial and pulmonary arteries; however, non-bronchial systemic arteries, such as the intercostal arteries, can also be potential sources of massive haemoptysis. Cases of life-threatening haemoptysis arising from an intercostal artery pseudoaneurysm in patients with pulmonary TB, however, remain underreported. We hereby describe a case of a middle-aged man who was diagnosed with pulmon

In recent decades, many studies have been published on the use of automatic smear microscopy for diagnosing pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). Most of them deal with a preliminary step of the diagnosis, the bacilli detection, whereas sputum smear microscopy for diagnosis of pulmonary TB comprises detecting and reporting the number of bacilli found in at least 100 microscopic fields, according to the 5 grading scales (negative, scanty, 1+, 2+ and 3+) endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO). Pulmonary TB diagnosis in bright-field smear microscopy, however, depends upon the attention of a train

Bronchial artery-pulmonary artery fistulae are rare vascular malformations most commonly caused by infection. Our case presents a 57-year-old male who presented to the Emergency Department with a symptomatic bronchial artery-pulmonary artery fistula due to cavitating pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). The diagnosis was made with multiphase CT angiography of the thorax (including pulmonary and systemic arterial phases). The patient was brought to interventional radiology for further investigation and management. The left upper lobe bronchial artery-pulmonary artery fistula was successfully identified

UNLABELLED: The relationship between nasal obstruction and obstructive sleep apnea has raised interest among otolaryngologists since years. There are studies that suggest that surgical correction of nasal obstruction improves sleep quality and reduces symptoms of sleep apnea. This lead to our study to understand the effect of nasal surgery on obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS).
AIM: To assess the effect of nasal surgery in improvement in Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Hypopnoea Syndrome in patients with nasal obstruction by Polysomnography (PSG).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study inc

World Health Organization (WHO) issued the latest recommendations regarding the management of drug-resistant Tuberculosis (TB) in 2022, allowing the replacement of ethambutol (6 months) with linezolid (2 months). This recommendation also introduced a new regimen, namely bedaquiline, pretomanide, linezolid, moxifloxacin (BPaLM) for fluoroquinolone-sensitive patients and bedaquiline, pretomanide, linezolid, (BPaL) for patients insensitive to fluoroquinolone (6-9 months). The latest TB regimen introduced by WHO provides a shorter-course treatment, however not much has been discussed about the imp

Bronchial dilatation is a potentially serious and irreversible clinical and radiological entity. It is an often underdiagnosed condition, particularly in developing countries. This clinical image presents bronchial dilatations of casual discovery associated with radiographic images suggestive of progressive pulmonary tuberculosis. Thoracic imaging remains crucial in the diagnosis of bronchopulmonary diseases.

BACKGROUND: Despite widespread availability of curative therapy, tuberculosis (TB) treatment outcomes remain suboptimal. Clinical prediction models can inform treatment strategies to improve outcomes. Using baseline clinical data, we developed a prediction model for unsuccessful TB treatment outcome and evaluated the incremental value of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related severity and isoniazid acetylator status.
METHODS: Data originated from the Regional Prospective Observational Research for Tuberculosis Brazil cohort, which enrolled newly diagnosed TB patients in Brazil from 2015 t

A 76-year-old woman from a tuberculosis (TB) endemic region with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) on Azacitidine presented with a non-productive cough. A CT scan of the chest revealed a lobulated opacity in the right upper lobe and antibiotic therapy was initiated for a potential bacterial pneumonia. However, a high suspicion for pulmonary TB remained given her nation of origin, immunosuppression, and imaging findings. Three sputum and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) acid-fast bacilli (AFB) smears with PCR testing for Mycobacterium tuberculosis were negative, as were examinations for other

A man in his seventies who lived alone was found dead in his home. Postmortem computed tomography (CT) performed prior to autopsy showed right-sided tension pneumothorax. Autopsy revealed an active pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) lesion. Macroscopic and histopathological findings showed pleural infiltration by TB lesions, suggesting that tension pneumothorax developed in association with TB infection. Routine postmortem CT performed prior to autopsy is useful in screening for TB because the presence of TB lesions can be confirmed from characteristic pulmonary findings. However, it may be difficult

Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection (Mtb) is the leading cause of death due to a single infectious agent and is among the top ten causes of all human deaths worldwide1. CD4 T cells are essential for resistance to Mtb infection, and for decades it has been thought that IFNγ production is the primary mechanism of CD4 T-cell-mediated protection2,3. However, IFNγ responses do not correlate with host protection, and several reports demonstrate that additional anti-tuberculosis CD4 T-cell effector functions remain unaccounted for4-8. Here we show that the tumour-necrosis factor (TNF) superfamily mo

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is underdiagnosed and underevaluated routinely because of clinical and radiological overlap with tuberculosis (TB), especially in tropical setting with high TB burden countries like India. ABPA is the best-recognized manifestation of Aspergillus-associated hypersensitivity to Aspergillus antigens in patients with long-standing atopic asthma. ABPA with varied clinical presentation has been reported to occur in 20% of asthmatic patients admitted to hospitals and in 5% of all rhinitis cases. In this case report, we documented middle age male with kno

Chemotherapy-induced lung toxicity can affect pulmonary parenchyma, pleura, airways, pulmonary vascular system, mediastinum or the neuromuscular system that is responsible for respiration. Chemotherapy-induced pulmonary toxicity is a diagnosis of exclusion. When the patients with malignancies develop pulmonary toxicity such as pneumonitis and distinguishing it from alternative diseases such as infectious, thrombotic, cardiac, malignant or exacerbation of chronic lung conditions can be difficult. Moreover, such patients are often immunosuppressed, physically stressed from the underlying disease
