INTRODUCTION: The act of June 17, 1998 created a new form of compulsory treatment: the injunction to care. This is a legal measure intended to fight against recidivism of offenders and sex offenders through medical measures. The only therapies that have demonstrated partial efficacy are cognitive behavioural therapy and treatment with anti-hormone. In France, psychodynamic therapies are paramount in the treatment of perpetrators of sexual violence, although such treatments have not demonstrated effectiveness in reducing sexual recidivism. Very few studies are available regarding the implementa

The new appendix criteria for a broader concept of chronic migraine from the International Headache Society no longer require headache resolution or return to the previous headache pattern to confirm the diagnosis of medication overuse headache (MOH). MOH can be subdivided into simple (Type I) and complex (Type II). Complex cases may involve long-term use of daily opioids or combination analgesics, multisourcing, multiple psychiatric comorbidities, and/or a history of relapse. Daily use of opioids for other medical conditions, psychiatric comorbidity including borderline personality disorder,

INTRODUCTION: The shortage of physicians in rural areas of the USA has led medical schools to focus on recruiting and selecting students who will choose to work in non-urban settings. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of student characteristics previously correlated to choosing rural practice (ie being older, being male, being raised in a rural community, having a spouse or significant other who was raised in a rural community, having a spouse or significant other whose parents live in a rural community, having parents with high school education or less, and graduating from a

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by deficits in emotion regulation and affective liability, specifically rumination. Despite this, inconsistencies have existed in the literature regarding which rumination type is most prominent in BPD. Taking this into consideration, a meta-analysis was performed to look at how BPD symptoms correlate with rumination, while also considering clinical moderator variables (i.e., BPD symptom domain, comorbidities, GAF score) and demographic moderator variables (i.e., age, gender, sample type, and education level). Analysis of rumination domain

For any sample of m different variables obtained on a sample of n different persons, there is an identity transformation between classifications of persons (types) that are defined with person-centered methods and classifications of variables (factors) defined with variable-centered methods: types are manifested in factors and factors are expressed in types. Both kinds of methods analyze the variability-the same variability-in a persons-by-variables data matrix. Person-centered types can be transformed into variable-centered factors. Thus, at a basic level there is a basis for integrating pers

Extant theoretical models of personality coherence/incoherence do not sufficiently address the challenge of explaining personality coherence dynamics and the role of psychological mechanisms, including temperament and attention. To overcome these limitations, the Complex-System Approach to Personality (C-SAP) postulates that personality coherence is a within-person structure that arises from the functional consistency/inconsistency between personality traits/types, underlain by specific attentional and temperament mechanisms that have integrative and regulatory potential. The dominant (reactiv

We report a case of a woman in her mid-20s presenting with encephalitis as the initial presentation of type 2 amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis (AIT). She was on amiodarone in view of a history of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Symptomatology included acute personality change and focal myoclonic jerks.Cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed a non-specific protein count elevation with negative microbiology, virology, autoimmune screen and onconeural antibodies. The electroencephalogram was consistent with a generalised cerebral dysrhythmia. An MRI of the head revealed symmetrical oedema within the mo

Sensation seeking, substance abuse severity, and psychiatric disorders were systematically assessed in a clinical and a community sample of 335 cocaine abusers. In contrast to low-sensation-seeking cocaine abusers, high-sensation seekers exhibited more severe symptoms of substance abuse, exhibited more severe psychosocial impairment, were more likely to be polysubstance abusers, and had an earlier age of onset for substance use and abuse. High-sensation seekers were more likely to report both a lifetime history and family history of antisocial personality, attention deficit disorder, and condu

Background Psychological factors are associated with an increased risk of developing ischemic heart disease ( IHD ). Women more often report psychological factors, and sex and gender differences are present in IHD . In this meta-analysis we examine the risks of psychological factors for IHD incidence in women and men. We hypothesize that a broad range of psychological factors are related to a higher risk for incident IHD , with a higher risk for women. Methods and Results PubMed, EMBASE , and Psyc INFO were searched for studies assessing the risk between psychological factors and incident IHD

Phagophobia is a disorder characterized by a conditioned excessive fear of eating and is initiated by an event such as vomiting or choking. During childhood, vomiting often occurs as a result of infection or overeating, and painful experiences bring about maladaptive eating behavior like food refusal. There have been few reports of phagophobia, and patients have sometimes been misdiagnosed with anorexia nervosa (AN). The objective of this study was to elucidate the psycho-pathology and current treatment of patients with phagophobia by analyzing case studies. We describe 6 cases with phagophobi

Huntington's disease is a lethal autosomal dominant disorder that affects men and women equally. The prevalence of Huntington's disease in North America is 5 to 10 per 100000 people. It is characterized by regular personality changes, dementia, and choreiform (dance-like) movements. Literature concerning dental treatment of patients who have been diagnosed with this type of disease is scarce. Continuous ingestion of medications to control the symptoms of this disease leads to xerostomia, which, maximized by unrestrained movements, often leads to progressive tooth decay, irreversible pulpitis,

We examined whether affective variability can predict non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in eating disorders. Affect was represented by valence (positive versus negative) and activation (high versus low). Twenty-one patients with anorexia nervosa-restricting type, 18 patients with anorexia nervosa-binge-purging type and 20 patients with bulimia nervosa reported their momentary affect at nine random times a day during a one week period using a hand-held computer. Affective variability was calculated as the within-person standard deviation of valence and activation over time. Results indicate that

BACKGROUND: Ordinary referral of a patient from the regular general practitioner (RGP) to a psychiatrist often implies a long waiting-time and numerous consultations. In many cases, it is not necessary that specialists take over treatment of the patients, but rather that they offer support to the RPGs.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patient-consultations with both a psychiatrist and the RGP present can, in some cases, answer many questions and be a shortcut to a correct diagnosis and treatment. The article presents a method for "simultaneous-consultations", and the authors' experience with the 19 pati

The "Pockemon shock" is the most famous accident in the history of the broadcasting industry in Japan. Based on the experiences of this unfortunate accident from famous animation program "Pocket Monster", this study focused on the psychology and psychosomatics of the patients. A head-mounted display was used as the three-dimensional image presentation device and "Descent", a free software shooting game, was used as the software. Ten healthy adult male volunteers were used in this experiment after obtaining their informed consent. The oxygen metabolic change in the anterior lobe of the brain wa

This study describes the affective component of hostility as measured by the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale (Ho; W. Cook & D. Medley, 1954) by examining the relationship between facial expressions of emotion and Ho scores in 116 male coronary heart disease patients. Patients underwent the videotaped Type A Structured Interview, from which facial expressions were later coded using the Facial Action Coding System. They also completed the Cook-Medley Ho scale. Facial expression of the emotion of contempt was significantly related to Ho scores; anger expression was not. Also, there was a significant

Prior research suggests that the Type A behavior pattern, Cook and Medley Hostility (Ho) scores, and Total Serum Cholesterol (TSC) are positively associated with physiological changes to behavioral stressors. The objective of the present study was to determine whether TSC interacts with the Type A behavior pattern and hostility to affect cardiovascular and neurohormonal responses to a mental arithmetic task (MATH). For Type A individuals, elevated TSC was associated with larger catecholamine and cortisol responses to MATH. In contrast, for Type B subjects, cholesterol was negatively associated

OBJECTIVE: The current study had two objectives: (1) to access the psychiatric comorbidity in axis I and axis II (according to DSM-IV) of anorexia nervosa in a sample of 60 anorexic patients; (2) to compare the features of the psychiatric comorbidity between the two groups of French and Greek anorexic patients who participated in the study, as well as to compare some psychological and behavioral aspects of their anorectic psychopathology.
METHOD: Sixty anorexic patients, thirty French and thirty Greek, aged between 18 and 60 years, referred for evaluation and therapy at the unit of eating dis

Gustav Specht (1860-1940) developed academic psychiatry in Erlangen. After studying medicine in Würzburg, Munich and Berlin, he became assistant medical director in the mental asylum of Erlangen. In 1897 he was appointed extraordinary, and in 1903 ordinary, Professor of Psychiatry. A good clinician and teacher, Specht worked during a time of paradigm change in psychiatry. He was an expert in chronic mania, and introduced the concept of the 'grumbler's delusion'. Paranoia he believed to be the core problem of psychopathology and considered the depressive syndrome as an 'exogenous-type' of react

A total of 132 patients of both sexes who ranged from 32 to 49 years old were studied in a general hospital setting. They were diagnosed as having developed organic affection of the brain presenting with the leading psychosis-like syndrome, viz, personality and behaviour derangements--[F 07.0] according to the international classification ICD-10. All those having been examined in 1986 took part in the elimination of the effects of the Chernobyl accident. Based on the findings obtained it has been ascertained that late in the course of the organic brain affection sequelae there start prevailing
