OBJECTIVES: To measure the prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) at the time of their annual examination and to examine the effect on urine testing during the annual examination on subsequent antibiotic use.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
SETTING: A major SCI center.
PARTICIPANTS: Veterans (N=393) with SCI seen for an outpatient annual evaluation in 2012 or 2013.
INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to determine how often the appendix is involved or the primary source of cancer in women undergoing surgery for mucinous borderline ovarian tumour (mBOT) or invasive mucinous ovarian tumour (IMOT) and to evaluate whether appendectomy is necessary.

Literature states that ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging have a role in diagnosis. We report a rare case of an accessory lobe of the liver in the right thoracic cavity with the past history of breast cancer. A 66-year-old woman underwent thoracotomy owing to a slowly growing suspected lung tumor identified by computed tomography. The intraoperative findings revealed an accessory lobe of the liver. If this possibility had been considered, the correct diagnosis could have been achieved using computed tomography with multi-directional scanning, so that an unnecessary operation could have been avoided.

The aim of the study presented here was to evaluate the utility of anaerobically incubated blood cultures for detecting infections in pediatric patients. During a 2-year period 9,165 pediatric blood samples were processed, and significant microorganisms were recovered from 497 (5.4%) of them. Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), though rare, are associated with neurofibromatosis (NF) type 1 and may cause significant gastrointestinal bleeding.
