During diagnostic procedures for various diseases, five patients underwent intravenous pyelograms which showed gas formations in the collector system, in absence of acute symptoms. Laboratory chemical, bacteriologic and radiologic examinations explained the origin of these gas formations. In one patient with diabetes mellitus and in another with an oesophageal neoplasm, infections were caused by gas forming bacteria. In three cases, bladder fistula formations were present by Crohn's disease, colon diverticulosis and a gynecological malignancy.

PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ten pregnant women (mean age 25 years, SD 4.5, range 22-33) with ureteric stones were treated by ureteroscopy. The mean (SD, range) gestation time was 24 (6.5, 19-33) weeks. Since 1977, 301 patients with spinal cord pathology have been taught to self-catheterize. The majority (234) remain on the programme. The reasons for the 67 ceasing the procedure and the changing pattern of bladder management amongst Queensland's spinally injured community are discussed. The complications and advantages of the system are considered and a plea is put forward that intermittent clean self-catheterisation should be preferred as the preferred option to all spinally injured persons with good hand function.

INTRODUCTION: Suprapubic prostatectomy remains a very common surgical treatment for bladder outlet obstruction from an enlarged prostate in the developing world. It is a technically simple procedure which can be learned by nonurologists who perform the bulk of these procedures in the developing world. Intraoperative and postoperative bleeding, however, can be a problem. We describe our experience with prostatic fossa packing at the time of the procedure, as a very simple, quick and effective technique for maximal hemostasis.

This health economic evaluation simulated a cohort to compare hydrophilic-coated to non-coated catheters for intermittent catheterization. By using a Markov model, lifetime costs and catheter-related complications were investigated. Forty-nine patients underwent preoperative cystoscopy prior to surgical resection for adenocarcinoma of the rectum. There were 30 men and 19 women ranging in age from 26 to 78 years, with a median age of 59 years.
