Patients who are not catheterized may notice a discolouration in their urine or faeces, either occasionally or continually. Such discolouration can usually be put down to waste materials caused by medication or food. However, a comment often made by nurses who see catheterized patients is, 'My patient's drainage bag has turned purple'. Patients with this condition can show no underlying urine infection. It is also noticeable that the longer the drainage bag is used, the deeper the colour purple becomes. Over a period of time this discolouration then impregnates their catheter. This condition a

A recent study has shown that infection in the first 2 weeks after stroke correlates with 3-year mortality, and that risk of infection is highest in patients with dysphagia, urinary catheterization, or intracerebral haemorrhage. Studies are needed to assess treatment strategies to prevent early infection in patients with acute stroke.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the hypothesis that the need for clean intermittent self-catheterization after botulinum neurotoxin type A injections is outweighed by the efficacy of this treatment, so that clean intermittent self-catheterization is not a burden for patients with refractory idiopathic detrusor overactivity.
METHODS: Women undergoing intradetrusor injections of 200 units botulinum neurotoxin type A for refractory idiopathic detrusor overactivity were evaluated prospectively. Clean intermittent self-catheterization was discussed with all patients and its possible need after botulinum

Postoperative acute urinary retention was evaluated in the patients who underwent Pereyra procedure. Comparison of suprapubic and urethral catheterization. Between January 1994 and July 1995, fifty two patients with urinary stress incontinence underwent Pereyra procedure, 31 female patient with suprapubic drainage (cistofix Ch 15) and 17 urethral catherization with a latex foley catheter. Sponatneous micturition and urinary retention was evaluated until the catheter was removed. Mean age was 43.8 years (32 a 66), the duration of suprapubic vesical drainage with suprapubic catheter were 3 days

OBJECTIVE: To compare the accuracy of using a bladder scanner to measure post-voiding residual urine volume with measurement by intermittent catheterization in a postoperative urogynaecology population.
METHODS: Prior to implementation of the study, nurses were trained in the use of a bladder ultrasound scanner. Post-void residual urine volume in postoperative patients was assessed by a nurse with the scanner; a second nurse, blinded to the scanner result, then catheterized the patient's bladder. Each patient rated the pain experienced with bladder scanning and with catheterization. A prospec

The Foley catheter is one of the most commonly used devices in modern surgical practice. Developed for draining the urinary bladder, this humble catheter has been employed for many other purposes ranging from urine output monitoring to complex urological investigations. Over time, it has evolved into being applied in more complex and innovative ways in various other specialties apart from urology. In this review article, we describe some of the common and novel uses of this deceptively simple device, and discuss the scope of its application in modern medicine.

The suprapubic catheter enables a percutaneous drainage of urine. The insertion is made superior of the pubic bone through the abdominal wall into the bladder. It allows a permanent drainage of urine bypassing the urethra. The insertion of a suprapubic catheter requires knowledge and expertise. This paper summarizes the basic background and allows to follow the practical application step by step.

INTRODUCTION: To propose a novel cannulation technique for difficult urethral catheterization procedures.
TECHNIQUE: The sheath tip of an intravenous catheter is cut off, replaced to the needle tip and pushed through the distal drainage side hole to Foley catheter tip, and finally withdrawn for cannulation. In situations making urethral catheterization difficult, a guide wire is placed under direct vision. The modified Foley catheter is slid successfully over the guide wire from its distal end throughout the urethral passage into the bladder.
RESULTS: The modified Foley catheter was used suc

The use of double J catheters is usual in urologist's daily practice. The indication can be divided in prophylactic or therapeutic. Prophylactically, they prevent complications derived from endourological procedures, such as ureteral lesion or obstructive uropathy secondary to residual lithiasis or edema. Therapeutically, they treat obstructive uropathy of many different pathologies, either in an emergency setting or scheduled, such as lithiasis, stenosis, extrinsic compression of any nature or urinary tract tumors among others. Although they add clear benefits in both cases, they are not free

BACKGROUND: Management of the neurogenic bladder has the primary objectives of maintaining continence, ensuring low bladder pressure (to avoid renal damage) and avoiding or minimising infection. Options include intermittent urethral catheterisation, indwelling urethral or suprapubic catheterisation, timed voiding, use of external catheter (for men), drug treatment, augmentation cystoplasty and urinary diversion.
OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to determine the effects of different methods of managing long-term voiding problems (persisting after three months) with catheters in patients w

In the past, the only way to drain a bladder was to use intermittent catheterisation. For four millennia, intermittent self-catheterisation (ISC) was used to treat bladder dysfunction. That changed in the 20th century when Foley redesigned and improved on 19th century designs for an indwelling urethral catheter. While some patients benefit from indwelling catheters, long- and short-term indwelling catheters can increase infection risks and contribute to bladder dysfunction. NICE guidance on infection control recommends that intermittent catheterisation should be used in preference to an indwel

OBJECTIVES: To perform a comparative evaluation of three types of continuous bladder irrigation catheters with the aim of determining which of them allows greater irrigation solution inflow and bladder outflow.
METHODS: We compared three types of three-way catheters, 22F in caliber, being the material the main difference between them: latex, silicone, or polyvinyl.
RESULTS: The polyvinyl catheter showed significant differences both in inflow and outflow in comparison with the other two types of catheters (p = 0.000, ANOVA test with Sheffe's post hoc). Additionally, the latex catheter showed
