Home used, patient self-managed, brain-computer interface for the management of central neuropathic pain post spinal cord injury: usability study.

BACKGROUND: Central Neuropathic Pain (CNP) is a frequent chronic condition in people with spinal cord injury (SCI). Previously, we showed that using laboratory brain-computer interface (BCI) technology for neurofeedback (NFB) training, it was possible to reduce CNP in people with SCI. In this study, we show results of patient self-managed treatment in their homes with a BCI-NFB using a consumer EEG device. METHODS: Users: People with chronic SCI (17 M, 3 F, 50.6 ± 14.1 years old), and CNP ≥4 on a Visual Numerical Scale. LOCATION: Laboratory training (up to 4 sessions) followed by home self-m

EEG-Based BCI Control Schemes for Lower-Limb Assistive-Robots.

Over recent years, brain-computer interface (BCI) has emerged as an alternative communication system between the human brain and an output device. Deciphered intents, after detecting electrical signals from the human scalp, are translated into control commands used to operate external devices, computer displays and virtual objects in the real-time. BCI provides an augmentative communication by creating a muscle-free channel between the brain and the output devices, primarily for subjects having neuromotor disorders, or trauma to nervous system, notably spinal cord injuries (SCI), and subjects

A new simple brain segmentation method for extracerebral intracranial tumors.

Normal brain segmentation is available via FreeSurfer, Vbm, and Ibaspm software. However, these software packages cannot perform segmentation of the brain for patients with brain tumors. As we know, damage from extracerebral tumors to the brain occurs mainly by way of pushing and compressing while leaving the structure of the brain intact. Three-dimensional (3D) imaging, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) technology have begun to be applied in clinical practice. The free medical open-source software 3D Slicer allows us to perform 3D simulations on a computer and requires little u

Virtual surgery simulation versus traditional approaches in training of residents in cervical pedicle screw placement.

INTRODUCTION: The cervical screw placement is one of the most difficult procedures in spine surgery, which often needs a long period of repeated practices and could cause screw placement-related complications. We performed this cadaver study to investigate the effectiveness of virtual surgical training system (VSTS) on cervical pedicle screw instrumentation for residents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of ten novice residents were randomly assigned to two groups: the simulation training (ST) group (n = 5) and control group (n = 5). The ST group received a surgical training of cervical pedicle

Role of virtopsy in the post-mortem diagnosis of drowning.

PURPOSE: Due to admitted limits of autopsy-based studies in the diagnosis of drowning, virtopsy is considered the new imaging horizon in these post-mortem studies. The aim of our study was to evaluate the role of virtopsy performed through computed tomography (CT) in the forensic diagnosis of drowning. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively examined the CT data of four cadavers recovered from sea water and suspected to have died by drowning. Each patient underwent a full-body post-mortem CT scan, and then a traditional autopsy. RESULTS: All the cadavers showed fluid in the airways and pat

Creation of the virtual patient for the study of facial morphology.

The author provides an overview of the new imaging technologies that allow the practitioner to accurately capture the patient's soft tissue facial morphology and underlying bones and teeth, including details of dental model integration. This article describes how a virtual patient is created and manipulated and the practical use of this technology. It takes the quantification of the 3D surface further by proposing a reference framework of landmarks of craniofacial structure that can be used for comparison of surgical change, growth, gender, and phenotype.

A new optical method to evaluate three-dimensional volume changes of alveolar contours: a methodological in vitro study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the reproducibility and the accuracy of volumetric measurements of specimens imitating localized alveolar ridge defects using an optical three-dimensional (3D) system. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eight pairs of specimens (five with a cuboid and three with a geometrically complex form) were used for the measurements. Each of them imitated a pre-operative ridge defect and a corresponding surgically corrected post-operative situation. The true volume differences between two corresponding specimens were either assessed by a mechanical 3D coordinate meas

State-of-the-art imaging of the central airways.

Recent technological advances in CT imaging have revolutionized non-invasive imaging of the central airways. It is now possible to image the entire central airways in a few seconds and to create elegant three-dimensional reconstructions of the airways in a few minutes. The fast speed of CT scanning now allows for a dynamic assessment of the central airways, expanding the ability to non-invasively detect functional abnormalities such as tracheobronchomalacia. The purpose of this article is to familiarize clinicians with recent advances in airway imaging. A special emphasis is placed upon advanc

Theoretical considerations for the surgical correction of mandibular deformity in hemifacial microsomia patients using multifocal distraction osteogenesis.

PURPOSE: This theoretical pilot study investigated the geometric changes necessary to normalize the mandibular shape in hemifacial microsomia. Using the mandibular deformity of a 13-year-old patient affected by hemifacial microsomia as an example, we addressed 2 main issues. First, the number of segments needed for adequate reshaping of the deformed mandible is evaluated. Second, the geometry of the intersegmental gaps resulting from reposition of the segments is correlated with established parameters of distraction osteogenesis to theoretically predict the practicability of correction using m

Recording and transmission of digital wound images with the help of a mobile device.

The goal of this project is to develop a mobile device for transmitting images for the aftercare of surgical patients within the framework of the competence center TELTRA. After designing and evaluating different platforms and cameras, it was decided to develop for a compact flash camera card and an HSCSD modem which is based on and can be plugged into a pocket PC. The recorded images are sent with the help of a Java program from the pocket PC over an IrDA interface to the HSCSD mobile telephone, and then to the web server, where it is saved in a digital patient record.

StackDILI: Enhancing Drug-Induced Liver Injury Prediction through Stacking Strategy with Effective Molecular Representations.

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a major challenge in drug development, often leading to clinical trial failures and market withdrawals due to liver toxicity. This study presents StackDILI, a computational framework designed to accelerate toxicity assessment by predicting DILI risk. StackDILI integrates multiple molecular descriptors to extract structural and physicochemical features, including the constitution, pharmacophore, MACCS, and E-state descriptors. Additionally, a genetic algorithm is employed for feature selection and optimization, ensuring that the most relevant features are use

Standard task set for evaluating rehabilitation interventions for individuals with arm paralysis.

We have developed a set of upper-limb functional tasks to guide the design and test the performance of rehabilitation technologies that restore arm motion in people with high tetraplegia. Our goal was to develop a short set of tasks that would be representative of a much larger set of activities of daily living (ADLs), while also being feasible for a user of a unilateral, implanted functional electrical stimulation (FES) system. To compile this list of tasks, we reviewed existing clinical outcome measures related to arm and hand function and were further informed by surveys of patient desires.

TST Score Helper: An Open-Source Graphical User Interface for Assisted Manual Scoring of the Tail Suspension Test.

The tail suspension test (TST) is a well-known rodent behavioral test that assesses stress and depressive-like behavior. While several automatic tail suspension test scoring programs have emerged, many researchers still prefer a manual scoring method for accuracy and reliability. However, manual scoring can introduce significant errors. Thus, in this work, we present a novel graphical user interface that assists in the manual scoring process to minimize possibility for errors. The GUI, which we refer to as "TST Score Helper," minimizes errors through consolidation of the TST scoring procedure

Interactive Virtual Ankle Movement Controlled by Wrist sEMG Improves Motor Imagery: An Exploratory Study.

Virtual reality (VR) techniques can significantly enhance motor imagery training by creating a strong illusion of action for central sensory stimulation. In this article, we establish a precedent by using surface electromyography (sEMG) of contralateral wrist movement to trigger virtual ankle movement through an improved data-driven approach with a continuous sEMG signal for fast and accurate intention recognition. Our developed VR interactive system can provide feedback training for stroke patients in the early stages, even if there is no active ankle movement. Our objectives are to evaluate:

Personalized Online Adaptation of Kinematic Synergies for Human-Prosthesis Interfaces.

Synergies have been adopted in prosthetic limb applications to reduce the complexity of design, but typically involve a single synergy setting for a population and ignore individual preference or adaptation capacity. However, personalization of the synergy setting is necessary for the effective operation of the prosthetic device. Two major challenges hinder the personalization of synergies in human-prosthesis interfaces (HPIs). The first is related to the process of human motor adaptation and the second to the variation in motor learning dynamics of individuals. In this paper, a systematic per
