Preference for visual scanning strategies versus phonological rehearsal in university students with reading disabilities.

This study investigated strategic preferences for visual scanning versus phonological rehearsal for recognizing words, pronounceable letter strings, and symbol strings by university students with reading disabilities (RD). Forty-seven subjects participated in this study: 20 students with reading disabilities who reported current difficulties in reading, as well as problems in learning to read at an early age; 15 students with learning disabilities (LD) who reported current difficulties in learning in areas other than reading but did not recall difficulties in learning to read; and 12 nondisabl

Predicting long-term neurocognitive outcome after pediatric intensive care unit admission for bronchiolitis-preliminary exploration of the potential of machine learning.

PURPOSE: For successful prevention and intervention, it is important to unravel the complex constellation of factors that affect neurocognitive functioning after pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admission. This study aims (1) to elucidate the potential relevance of patient and PICU-related characteristics for long-term adverse neurocognitive outcome after PICU admission for bronchiolitis, and (2) to perform a preliminary exploration of the potential of machine learning as compared to linear regression to improve neurocognitive outcome prediction in a relatively small sample of children aft

Obligatory and facultative brain regions for voice-identity recognition.

Recognizing the identity of others by their voice is an important skill for social interactions. To date, it remains controversial which parts of the brain are critical structures for this skill. Based on neuroimaging findings, standard models of person-identity recognition suggest that the right temporal lobe is the hub for voice-identity recognition. Neuropsychological case studies, however, reported selective deficits of voice-identity recognition in patients predominantly with right inferior parietal lobe lesions. Here, our aim was to work towards resolving the discrepancy between neuroima

Phonological processing deficits and the acquisition of the alphabetic principle in a severely delayed reader: a case study.

At the end of first grade, TM did not know the alphabet and could read no words. He could not tap syllables in words, had difficulty producing rhyming words and retrieving the phonological representations of words, and he could not discriminate many phoneme contrasts. He learned letter-sound correspondences first for single-consonant onsets and then later for the final consonant in a word but had difficulty with letter-sound associations for vowels. TM's ability to select a printed word to match a spoken word on the basis of the initial or final letter and sound was interpreted as evidence of

Implicit and explicit aspects of sequence learning in pre-symptomatic Huntington's disease.

Learning deficits may be part of the early symptoms of Huntington's disease (HD). Here we characterized implicit and explicit aspects of sequence learning in 11 pre-symptomatic HD gene carriers (pHD) and 11 normal controls. Subjects moved a cursor on a digitizing tablet and performed the following tasks: SEQ: learning to anticipate the appearance of a target sequence in two blocks; VSEQ: learning a sequence by attending to the display without moving for one block, and by moving to the sequence in a successive block (VSEQ test). Explicit learning was measured with declarative scores and number

Predictors of word-level literacy amongst Grade 3 children in five diverse languages.

Groups of Grade 3 children were tested on measures of word-level literacy and undertook tasks that required the ability to associate sounds with letter sequences and that involved visual, auditory and phonological-processing skills. These groups came from different language backgrounds in which the language of instruction was Arabic, Chinese, English, Hungarian or Portuguese. Similar measures were used across the groups, with tests being adapted to be appropriate for the language of the children. Findings indicated that measures of decoding and phonological-processing skills were good predicto

Early development of neurophysiological processes involved in normal reading and reading disability: a magnetic source imaging study.

This longitudinal study examined the development of the brain mechanism involved in phonological decoding in beginning readers using magnetic source imaging. Kindergarten students were assigned to 2 groups: those who showed mastery of skills that are important predictors of proficient reading (low-risk group) and those who initially did not show mastery but later benefited from systematic reading instruction and developed average-range reading skills at the end of Grade 1 (high-risk responders). Spatiotemporal profiles of brain activity were obtained during performance of letter-sound and pseu

Neurocognitive functioning in recently abstinent, cocaine-abusing schizophrenic patients.

PURPOSE: This report examined a broad range of cognitive functioning in a group of recently abstinent, cocaine-abusing schizophrenic patients (CA + SZ). METHODS: Measures of selective and sustained attention, learning and memory, and executive functioning were administered to CA + SZ patients within 72 h of last cocaine use. A comparison group of non-substance-abusing schizophrenic patients (SZ) presenting for inpatient psychiatric treatment were also examined in an identical time frame. We hypothesized that the neurobiological impact of cocaine abuse and acute abstinence would cause CA + SZ

Brain activation during word identification and word recognition.

Previous memory research has suggested that the effects of prior study observed in priming tasks are functionally, and neurobiologically, distinct phenomena from the kind of memory expressed in conventional (explicit) memory tests. Evidence for this position comes from observed dissociations between memory scores obtained with the two kinds of tasks. However, there is continuing controversy about the meaning of these dissociations. In recent studies, Ostergaard (1998a, Memory Cognit, 26:40-60; 1998b, J. Int. Neuropsychol. Soc., in press) showed that simply degrading visual word stimuli can dra

Principal identifying features of the syndrome of nonverbal learning disabilities in children.

The identifying features of the syndrome of nonverbal learning disabilities (NLD) were examined with a view to determining their relative discriminant validity. A stepwise linear discriminant function analysis of children with NLD (n = 29), children with reading and spelling disabilities (Group R-S; n = 27), and a group of nonclinical children (NC; n = 27) on 15 neuropsychological variables yielded a subset of scores on four tests (Target Test; Trail Making Test, Part B; Tactual Performance Test; and Grooved Pegboard Test) that accurately (> 95%) discriminated the NLD group from the R-S and NC…

From letters to words: procedures for word recognition in letter-by-letter reading.

There are two alternative interpretations of how word recognition is accomplished in letter-by-letter reading. One postulates that it relies on the spelling system operating "in reverse," whereas the other claims that it is mediated by the reading system. Because of the close association between patterns of reading and spelling in previously reported cases of letter-by-letter reading, both hypotheses may be considered equally plausible. We now report a patient with letter-by-letter reading who demonstrated a striking dissociation between reading and spelling. Our observations in this patient a

Visual perception and memory impairments in children at risk of nonverbal learning disabilities.

Visuospatial working memory (VSWM) and visual perception were examined in two groups aged 11-13, one with children displaying symptoms of nonverbal learning disability (NLD) (n = 18) and the other a control group without learning disabilities (n = 18). The two groups were matched for general verbal abilities, age, gender, and socioeconomic level. The children were presented with VSWM tests involving visual and spatial-simultaneous processes, and also with a classical visual illusion, a classical ambiguous figure, as well as visual perception tests specifically devised for the present study. Re…

Modality-specific and process-related organization of list-learning performance in principal component and network analyses.

Objective: List-learning tests provide learning, recall, and recognition indices that are often interpreted as reflecting partly distinct memory processes. We used principal component analysis (PCA) and network analysis (NA) as complementary approaches to examine the organization of verbal and visual-design list-learning performance, with particular attention to very-long-delay memory assessed after approximately 1 week. Method: Data were drawn from two normative cohorts of healthy adults (N = 805). Analyses of the conventional learning, delayed-recall, and recognition measures were based on 8

Abstract representations emerge in human hippocampal neurons during inference.

Humans have the remarkable cognitive capacity to rapidly adapt to changing environments. Central to this capacity is the ability to form high-level, abstract representations that take advantage of regularities in the world to support generalization1. However, little is known about how these representations are encoded in populations of neurons, how they emerge through learning and how they relate to behaviour2,3. Here we characterized the representational geometry of populations of neurons (single units) recorded in the hippocampus, amygdala, medial frontal cortex and ventral temporal cortex o

Significance of the Feuerstein approach in neurocognitive rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: The theory of Structural Cognitive Modifiability and Mediated Learning Experience of Reuven Feuerstein states that individuals with brain impairment, because of congenital or acquired origin, may substantially and structurally improve their cognitive functioning, by a systematic intervention based on a specific, criteria-based type of interaction ("mediated learning"). Three application systems are based on it: a dynamic-interactive assessment of learning capacity and processes of learning, the LPAD (Learning Propensity Assessment Device); a cognitive intervention program called "I

Can Machines Identify Pain Effects? A Machine Learning Proof of Concept to Identify EMG Pain Signature.

This study introduces a machine-learning-based approach for identifying "pain signatures" using electromyography data from volunteers undergoing acute pain. Leveraging the XGBoost algorithm, our method analyzes electromyography features (variance, mean absolute deviation, integral, peak, and entropy) to classify muscle contractions as painful or non-painful. Fifteen participants performed controlled elbow flexion tasks under three conditions: during painful and painless conditions. The results revealed that electromyographic peak and integral activity were key predictors of pain states, with t
