The presence and localization of receptors for atrial natriuretic peptide in the inner ear of the guinea pig.

Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is a cardiac hormone known to mediate increased capillary permeability, vasodilation, and natriuresis. Since specific receptors for ANP exist in both the eye and brain, possibly playing a role in ocular and cerebrospinal fluid regulation, we postulated that ANP might also be involved in inner ear fluid dynamics. Autoradiography was used to evaluate whether and where ANP receptors are present in the inner ear. Frozen sections of the cochlea and vestibular organ from guinea pigs (n = 18) were incubated in either 125J-ANP alone or together with an excess of unlabe

Vestibular function in experimental endolymphatic hydrops.

Endolymphatic sac ablation in the guinea pig can result in a dilated membranous labyrinth and low-frequency hearing loss similar to patients with Meniere's disease. However, this animal model fails to develop analogous symptoms of a Meniere's crisis such as sudden hearing loss and marked vestibular imbalance. Possibly, factors in addition to endolymphatic hydrops must be present to result in a crisis episode. By placing animals in an inverted posture, their intralabyrinthine pressure was elevated, causing additional stress on the inner ears. Standard electronystagmographic techniques were used

Subclinical vestibular pathology in patients with noise-induced hearing loss from intense impulse noise.

Sixty patients with varying degrees of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) after long-term exposure to intense impulse noise from firearms, but without manifest clinical symptoms of vestibular pathology, were tested for body sway using a stable platform. The results were compared with those from 115 healthy referents examined in the same way. Subjects with NIHL showed significantly more body sway, estimated as movement of the centre of gravity in the horizontal plane, than did the referents. Subjects with more severe NIHL showed more sway than subjects with milder acoustic trauma. The results sh

Comparative assessment of vestibular, optokinetic, and optovestibular stimulation in the development of experimental motion sickness.

The contribution of vestibular, optokinetic, and optovestibular stimulation to experimental motion sickness was evaluated in 29 volunteer subjects. Vestibular stimulation (Coriolis effect) was found to induce the most significant vestibular-autonomic disorders. Optokinetic stimulation (pseudo-Coriolis effect) and optovestibular stimulation could provoke such disorders only in susceptible subjects. In quantitative terms, optokinetic and optovestibular stimulation were less effective than vestibular Coriolis stress. Nystagmic reactions of susceptible subjects to the three types of stimulation di

M.I.T./Canadian vestibular experiments on the Spacelab-1 mission: 1. Sensory adaptation to weightlessness and readaptation to one-g: an overview.

Experiments on human spatial orientation were conducted on four crewmembers of Space Shuttle Spacelab Mission 1. This introductory paper presents the conceptual background of the project, the relationship among the experiments and their relevance to a "sensory reinterpretation hypothesis". Detailed experiment procedures and results are presented in the accompanying papers in this series. The overall findings are discussed in this article as they pertain to the following aspects of hypothesized sensory reinterpretation in weightlessness: utricular otolith afferent signals are reinterpreted as i

Bilateral congenital oval window microfistulae in a mother and son.

This article details case histories of a son and his mother who were studied over a seven-year period before making the diagnosis of bilateral oval window microfistulae in both of them. The boy demonstrated a slowly progressive bilateral and symmetrical sensorineural hearing loss closely resembling that of his mother. The case reports emphasize their respective histories, diagnostic evaluation, surgical observations, and treatment.

Infant lesion effect: I. Development of motor behavior following neonatal spinal cord damage in cats.

This study was undertaken to determine the effect of spinal cord damage on motor development, and to determine whether there is greater survival of motor function in those motor patterns with a later onset of function than in those which are present at birth. The postnatal development of postural reflexes and locomotion was examined during the first 4 months of life in normal kittens and in those which had received a spinal cord lesion (at high cervical or low thoracic levels) at birth. The results suggest that there are some similarities in normal development, recovery of function after adult

[Effect of caloric stimulation of the vestibular apparatus on hearing function].

Changes of bone-conduction thresholds for tonal signals (250 and 2000 Hz) in each car due to caloric vestibular tests were studied in 60 healthy test subjects (32 men and 28 women). These changes were found in 48 subjects. In most cases perceptual thresholds decreased (by 7.3 dB on the average) and in few cases increased (by 8.3 dB on the average). The sign of alteration was independent of the tonal vestibular test or the number of examinations. The threshold returned to the norm for a long time (30 min or more). These findings suggest that the interaction may be governed by the principles tha

Surgical exposure of the facial nerve: contemporary transtemporal techniques.

Contemporary surgical exposure of the facial nerve has as its aims adequate exposure of the facial nerve at any point in its course, with preservation of hearing and vestibular function, and without further injury to the facial nerve and the necessity for producing a mastoid cavity. Today it is surgically possible to expose the facial nerve from the brainstem to its terminal branches in the face. A decade of experience has shown that if the operator is armed with intimate anatomic knowledge of the temporal bone and middle and posterior fossae, and if the principles of facial nerve surgery outl
